Access question for the AF lounge at IAD (Washington, Dulles). I'm a SkyTeam Elite Plus flying in Business (Z) on a KLM-marketed, DL-operated flight from IAD-DTW-AMS next spring.
The Skyteam web site says I should have access:
First and Business Class
KLM web site says I should have access:
Other lounges worldwide
So, I'm (hopeful) in assuming that I would have lounge access with my KLM-marketed, Delta-operated, first class flight from IAD-DTW, which will connect to a KLM-marketed, Delta-operated business class DTW-AMS flight. Am I correct?
The Skyteam web site says I should have access:
First and Business Class
All First and Business Class passengers traveling on, or connecting to/from, a same-day international flight operated by a SkyTeam member airline have access to a lounge. Lounge access will be provided only at your departure and transfer airports, and not on arrival. For connecting customers, both the domestic and international flights must be operated by a SkyTeam member airline and all segments need to be booked in First or Business Class. Simply present your First or Business Class boarding passes for the lounge agent to validate for admission.
KLM web site says I should have access:
Other lounges worldwide
As a Business Class passenger, Flying Blue Platinum and Gold member or as a SkyTeam Elite Plus member you can also access many of our partner airline lounges worldwide.
North America (Air France/KLM/Delta airport lounges) Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York-JFK, San Francisco, Toronto, Washington, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Tampa, Dallas, Raleigh, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Seattle, Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis, Portland, Detroit, West Palm Beach, Memphis, Milwaukee, Boston and New York-LaGuardia
But, when I pull up IAD specifically they go on to say:You can access this lounge if you are an eligible passenger traveling on an international flight operated by the following airlines:

** anecdote : the AF staff at the lounge scanning my BP asked me why I was not on the non-stop AF IAD-CDG that was leaving 2hrs later instead of connecting in DTW. I replied that the cost of the J ticket returning on the non-stop was 7 KE while it was 3.5 connecting in DTW. Easy decision.

Yes you have access to the AF lounge in this configuration (personal exp last year on almost the same routing as you : IAD-DTW-CDG DL/AF **). But keep in mind that the lounge opens only at 10:30 am.

A quick question about the showers in CDG 2F AF lounge. How realistic is it to manage to use a shower during a morning layover at CDG. I have a TATL landing at 5:55 and then a connecting flight at 8:05, and I figure I might have about 1 hr (1.5 hr max) in the lounge. Is it realistic to squeeze in a shower at this hour? I know that the queues at AMS are endless, so I was wondering about CDG. Many thanks for the advice!

It's actually quite simple: your Personal Escort brings you through security to the lounge, into the lift, up one floor, and into a small room. In there you have four round tables for eating, and some seats and sofas. Two rows are facing the window with views on the tarmac, and one is a group where seats/sofa face each other. You order food from the menu. When your flight is ready to board, you're being picked up and escorted to the gate.
My personal judgment: the room is quite small and at times can feel a bit crowded, as sometimes you have the P pax of more than one flight in there. But you obviously always find space. The food is OK, but several leagues below what you get in the P lounge in Paris. Desserts are ice cream or whatever there is on the buffet in the main lounge. Wines are OK, the waiters tend to be clueless about them.
All in all it's pleasant and being able to dinner before the flight is convenient (especially since the menu on the JFK-CDG flights is quite frugal, even in P), but probably won't make it to the top of your lounge experience list.

on prior trips i have definitely waited more than 2hrs for a shower but also had longer layovers, so not sure if they prioritize the list or if i just got lucky

I think there actually is a dedicated thread. Otherwise, what would you like to know about?

Also....does the 4:25 77W departure share the same lackluster catering as the later two flights? is it any better or worse?
I'm such a dedicated UA and *A person as they've locked me in perpertually trying to re-qualify yearly for GS. I decided to try the other side (lol) after reading pretty glowing reviews of AF P class (especially CDG lounge/ ground experience) and the 77W especially.....it's the perfect storm of being in range of qualifying for GS (fingers crossed) and having a trip that AF was a viable (though, not most convenient carrier...vs LH F) very much looking forward to the experience....I know LH F...solid but not overwhelming. Cant wait to experience AF (I hope)
thanks again.

that's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much!

Objectively the on-board product of AF is not better or worse than LH (some elements better on one, some on the other). Subjectively and according to your taste you may indeed find AF overwhelming. In any case you didn't make a wrong decision, it's an absolutely fantastic product. The ground experience in Paris is better for the transfer experience, restaurant-in-the-lounge food and the spa; otherwise FRA B Lounge and especially MUC Satellite First Class Lounge are nicer (layout, light/windows/views, privacy, showers/bathrooms). But again, matter of taste, you don't go wrong with either.

Regarding the IAD renovated lounge, I was tired and forgot to do a proper lounge review.
At 4 PM I had a large choice of food:
- vegetables from the oven
- a choice of hot meats and rice
- a Do-It-Yourself salad buffet
- multiple verrines
- also sandwiches, fruits and soup, but the sandwiches were very appealing, and a very good bread!
Probably more, but I was very tired. I don't remember a fridge. There were 3 non-alcoholoc drinks: water, (non-sparkling) lemonade, and iced tea.
There is also a free wifi (better than the airport one), showers, and a bar. I didn't try to ordee alcohol, so no clue if the bar is to check your ID or to make you pay on order. The lounge was indeed quite crowded. Compared to the old lounge, the new one has more natural light, I saw a dedicated area for a few passagers (maybe it's also for Ultimate 👀 ).
(I would like to disable Flyertalk's autocorrect on mobile, because it does more harm than good. Had to retype the same words 4 times until it stopped changing my post!)

Regarding the bold part, alcohol is free with AF. IAD being located in VA, it is a state law to have an attended bar for alcoholic beverages. So they may ask for your ID if they wish. I have an anecdote about that. I was once in this lounge with several colleagues, including one who was around 42 at that time, but he looks much younger than his real age. He went to the bar to have a glass of Champagne and came back a few minutes later with no glass in hands. So we asked him why and he laughed saying he has to show his passport to the bar attendant because she wants to be sure he is older than 21! We are still joking with him about that story

Hello everyone,
I’m flying KLM in J JFK-AMS out of T4, but i’d like to go to the AF lounge in T1 (I have no status but flying J) instead of the DL lounge in T4. Will the allow access? Last time they denied because I was flying AZ in J, but that’s because AZ has its own lounge right next door.
thanks for any feedback!
