Today's buzz word is "patience" and flexibilty - monitoring various public service radio frequencies - reports of many spinouts, icy highways (as in primary roads) with accidents, disabled vehicles - about 3" of snow on the grounds this morning in NE Queens so far. Highway patrol (RMP) calling dispatchers to send salt trucks out to sand down - yet, this is nothing compared to the post-holiday blizzard 4 weeks ago, but the main event isn't here yet.

Forecast revised/upgraded 2 hours ago, text alert from NYC-O.E.M. to a Winter Storm Warning 10AM today thru 6 AM tomorrow for NYC & surrounding area (6" to 9" accumulations - which the snowbelt folks are laughing at .... but, hey, it's NY )

All 3 local airports are already experiencing flight delays and wind speed going higher later. Better arrived safe & late than NOT.

Appreciate the update - yes flying in from Boston - or more accurately sitting in the CO Club at BOS awaiting an update at Noon - flt delayed from 10.45 Doesn't look good. Called dial7 & they are not taking bookings (call on arrival only) due to weather! Allstate quoted $30%+ more

Sorry you've had so much trouble! I always book by phone. These companies all have toll-free numbers you can call from any public phone (in case you happen to be carrying a mobile that's not good for US calls). You can also try booking via the websites.

Allstate stated THAT? I never would have recommended them if I had known. What did Carmel say? I would assume the same as Dial 7?

As dstan said above, try booking online to avoid the markup. Also look for online coupons. Or perhaps by now, you've already landed in EWR and have taken care of or completed your transportation needs already.

I've certainly been declined a reservation by Dial7 on occasion, usually last minute, due to unusual circumstances like weather, but for Allstate to charge extra is just gouging.

For the record, this morning I nabbed a flight that looked like it was going from JFK, called Big Apple at about 9AM asking if they could come at 1130AM. The answer was that they might be up to 30 minutes late but they would keep letting me know.

Three e-mails and a phone call later informed me that the car would be there for me at 1135. Just for more grins, the trip out to JFK was easy with almost no traffic in the snowstorm

Thanks to all of you for your input. Well, we made it into EWR just under 2 hours late - not bad! When we collectd our bags we noticed that there were plenty of yellow cabs outside (importantly, including mini-vans) so decided to risk it! We lucked out (really we did - I usually hate NYC cabbies) & got a good driver. $80 including tolls, tip etc. Phew!

For my trip out to EWR next week I will pre-book...someone.....by phone......will let you know how I get on

Quick update on Eastern...

If you create a profile, they have a point system which basically gives you $1 off for every $20 you spend.

EWR to Brooklyn is $50 + $8 in tolls (to go through Manhattan). Pay with a credit card & they charge a $6 fee - cash is cheaper for them. The credit card fee is a little high, but still overall cheaper than many others.

I'm arriving at EWR around 9pm on a Monday night in February, so can't take Amtrak to NYP & the subway home - but even that's $27 for Amtrak - but it's after the last train leaves EWR area.

Does $64 for EWR-Crown Heights/Brooklyn seem reasonable? I feel that it is, but am curious if others don't think so.

Thanks!

NJTransit is about half the Amtrak price and runs much more often and much later. At 9pm I'd still probably take a car but only because I'd want to be home, not because the option wasn't there.

I think so.

You paid more for a yellow cab than you would have in a car. And those are NJ cabbies, not NYC cabbies out there.

Wow, this thread is making my head spin! I've seen a lot of the back and forth, and wanted to get the wisdom of the masses on car service vs. taxi tomorrow, arriving at 4pm to LGA (United), going to Andaz Wall Street. It seems about even on people saying it makes sense to book a car in advance or people saying just grab a cab from LGA-- does the 4pm on a Friday thing make any difference to that debate? Aiming to straddle the cheap/convenient line as I'm not rich and paying for this myself.

Wondering if it makes sense to plan on a taxi but if there are lines, have the numbers for places like Dial7 on my phone?

Thanks in advance!

At that time of day and going downtown you're looking at about $40 + tip and toll for a taxi. There are a few car companies that have cars for $32 and up for the same trip. Save yourself the hassle and book a car.

Make sure if you are going below 14th Street you tell the driver to take the Williamsburg Bridge and not the Queens Mid Town Tunnel. Last night using Dial7s I was checking email and did not say anything. I live in the Village and taking the Williamsburg Bridge is quicker and saves the toll and I will be damn if the driver didn't take the Queens Mid Town Tunnel.
