My friend/client uses this service and they appear to be the cheapest option for an inside-the-terminal pick-up to the city for $56 including tax/toll plus tip.

Unfortunately NY hotels all have deals with car services where the same car service that would charge you $100, will charge $200-250 if booked through the concierge. I use Elite which is considered high-end, but unfailingly as timely as anything in NY can be. If you have luggage, for an extra $15, the driver will meet you are baggage claim.

That said, there is nothing wrong with NY cabs --- they are plentiful at the airports and downtown hotels, take credit cards and as is noted elsewhere flat rate of $45 ($60 w. toll + tip) to/from JFK.

JFK car service help

I have been reading the forums and am looking for a reputable car service from JFK to Manhattane. Willing to spend around 75 dollars for the ride and am looking for good service. I have seen dial 7 (which offers select car service including water, NY times etc, as well as limores)

Can anyone tell me which car service would be best and has the nicest staff?

Limores staff are quite good and the cars are new. But they are typically more than the others. I liked Dial 7 over Carmel.

How would you rate the drivers of Dial7? I see they offer a meet and greet service in the airport. Is limores a better service than dial7?

Dial 7 is your standard car service. clean cars and drivers. Limores is a slightl upgrade. the online system they have makes it easier to arrange the pick up and assures for not human error in info. Both times I have used them I was in brand new cars, Lincoln Nav & Mercedes. and the drivers were good. The cost was about 15% more...was it worth it to me? sure as I wasn't paying but if it were my own dime and I just wanted a good clean service I'd go Dial7 and save the 12 bucks each way.

You can get jerks as drivers; you can get gems as drivers. What you spend doesn't guarantee you what type of driver you'll get. What I look for is on-time and competent.

I've never experienced jerky drivers on any of the services I've used. I like Dial 7 because it's more comfortable than a taxi and less expensive than one too when you get the coupon codes. I don't need to be met at the airport. It's easy to call the dispatcher when I arrive and then to be told where to meet the driver outside. The cars are clean and nice. But they're not stretch limos.

But if you require the driver to meet you inside holding a placard with your name on it, then hire a firm that will do it. But pay more including parking fees.

Welcome back, kyamato! Dial 7 online reservations

Dial 7 has online reservations as well, and coupons can be applied. OTOH, I have never had a problem with human error when calling in a reservation.

Notes:

• If you have 4 bags the website will NOT allow you to make a Standard Car reservation, while I have done this with phone agents routinely.

• When you call for pickup, you only need to provide the last four digits of the confirmation number to the operator.

I took Carmel Car Service out to EWR this morning. Even though there is no toll for the Holland Tunnel outbound I was told by the driver that I had to pay it anyway. Is this correct?

I had a flight to catch so I did not have time to really question the driver. Its only $8 but I don't like being ripped off and would not use Carmel again if I have been.

I would call Carmel and have them credit that $8 back to you and I'd have them reduce whatever automatic tip they charged. It states on their own website that "not every trip to/from an airport incures tolls". You are never charged a toll unless one is charged. That is standard with every car service. Carmel is a very large dispatch service and your driver would have had no problem picking up a fare at EWR. The only time I've seen a "come back toll" charged is on a specialty car, like a limousine, where they may not have a fare booked back.

Also, NYC taxis charge round-trip tolls for trips to EWR, since they aren't allowed to pick up pax at EWR (similarly, EWR taxis charge round-trip tolls for trips to NYC). But a standard Carmel sedan can almost certainly pick up a new fare at EWR for the return trip, so I don't see how they can justify charging round-trip tolls.

Dial7 Triboro bridge tolls - flat rate of $6.50

On a related note, I've been very unhappy to learn lately that Dial 7 is apparently charging a flat rate of $6.50 for Triboro tolls, even when the driver is using an EZPass for $4.80. The drivers are claiming this is Dial7 policy and I've written Dial7 to confirm.

Question is, who pockets the extra $1.70? If it's the driver, then my tips will be reduced commensurately. If it's Dial7, then I may take my business elsewhere.

(As forum regulars know, medallion yellow cabs are REQUIRED to use EZPass and to pass the discount along to the passenger. I couldn't find such a rule for livery vehicles, though.)
