From my experience, Lyft and Uber are not very reliable. I've had many drivers cancel on me.

As parents with kids, we always need car seats. I usually ask the company before booking and from my experience, they all have it at no charge. Some companies already have it as an option on their website. This is the company I used https://mayflowerlimo.com/ when we were in Denver. The experience was seamless.

Looking for transportation recommendation: JFK to Hyatt Grand Central, on a Tuesday this December, departing JFK around 9:30 pm. 4 adults, 2 large suitcases, 4 carry-on bags.

Taxi is flat rate so that sounds attractive, assuming I can get a cab to hold us all + luggage. How bad are the cab lines?

I have Lyft Pink, so get a discount. I think Lyft fares include tolls, but I'll need a Lyft XL so this will probably still cost more than a cab.

Not familiar with any of the car services, but willing to pay a bit more if it means no waiting for cab/Lyft.

Any suggestions welcome...thanks!

You can check Lyft, but its probably going to cost more and take longer, so I wouldnt count on it.

YMMV with taxi waits. Ive seen some long lines lately, but nothing outrageous (e.g., 20 min max). Ive also seen no wait. Your wait could be longer since youll need a larger cab to fit your whole party (same price). Also, some terminals are worse than others. The JFK airport website lists the waits in real time, and its generally accurate.

Car service will set you back an extra $40-60 over the taxi flat rate. Personally, with a 4 person party and luggage in winter after a 6 hour flight, Id spend the money to guarantee a nice car waiting on your arrival. But, the value of that money is your call.

I think a yellow cab would be your best bet. You might have to wait in a line but likely not longer (or not much longer) than waiting for a Lyft or Uber to show up.

If you are arriving into T5, however, I would suggest Uber/Lyft as the taxi rank is at the other end of the skywalk and between escalators and elevators (and walking), any time savings is negligible.

Can add another datapoint for mydestinylimo.com. Used them recently given the very frequent issues with yellow cab availability at JFK and the resulting spikes in Uber/Lyft fares. Both trips got us an unnecessary but welcome car upgrade (Escalades), drivers were polite, communicative, punctual and the all-in pricing upfront predictable and fair given the convenience.

I also did a bit of research because their website for first-time customers appears suspiciously basic, but they are affiliated with a large limo base (regulated by New York City) so this isn't some fly-by-night operator.

Thanks to @_fx for the original recommendation.

The car showed up on time, driver was professional, and the rate was *very* reasonable ... less than Uber/Lyft given the surge pricing at the time. Just one data point, but I'd recommend them.

I just looked at MyDestiny from where I live (in central Queens) to JFK tomorrow morning and it is more than twice as much as Uber/Lyft or a yellow cab, and even more than a local radio cab.

That is a fair caveat and a useful datapoint. I don't use limos for in-city transfers so can't speak to their pricing within NYC limits. I should have clarified that I used MyDestiny for 30+ mi airport trips out to/from Nassau County, Long Island where yellow cabs are not an option, and last minute Uber and Lyft cancellations are not uncommon.

I'd also note that MyDestiny already includes a tip in their fare quote and was within 20$ of the best UberComfort pre-quote we found (quoted before tip, and not even UberBlack).

One only need follow https://twitter.com/JFKairport to see how often these days the airport warns arriving passengers about long delays at the taxi rank and to make alternate arrangements. Having a scheduled ride was worth the peace of mind for us. If others have recommendations for more reasonable limo services from JFK out to the suburbs, I'd be all ears.

Are taxi rates between JFK - Manhattan the same whether you are taking a regular cab as compared to a larger cab (minivan)? Also, how much would the toll charges be?

Arriving at JFK around noon. There will be 2 adults & 2 children in my travel party. We will have 2 large suitcases & 4 carry on bags.

I'm assuming taking a taxi would be cheaper than Lyft/Uber, would that be correct?

No added surcharge for a minivan yellow cab or additional passengers or luggage. Only expect up to an additional $3.30 for state surcharges on top of the $52 flat rate. There should be no tolls unless you must use the Queens Midtown Tunnel or Triborough Bridge for some reason. The three free bridges connect to most parts of Manhattan conveniently, and you should generally tell your driver to take the bridge.

How's Carmel these days? It would be for around 8am UES to JFK, when taxis seem rare and Uber and Lyft prices are usually over $100 (and I worry whether they will want the ride)? Is there a better alternative?

Carmel is good old reliable for us lately (4 trips recently - late March, early April & twice in May) - Queens/east of LGA into midtown West and return ... we pre-booked ahead for going into Manhattan & booked on the spot coming back to Queens (pickup within 10 minutes as requested). Got upgraded twice from standard/deluxe/luxury sedan to a minivan free (no extra upcharge) - apparently, drivers accepted the "job" since it's a good base "fare" for them - base fare, toll, digital discount & tips, came to about $71 or $75, including the congestion surcharge. Priced one of the trip using Lyft app in real time (weekend morning too), couldn't beat Carmel's confirmed rate - another time using Lyft for a short but urgent local trip - rode in a Benz, nice huh. Except it was pretty old & wasn't well kept, clean but not what's really expected - long past its better days.

Book them ahead if you can - should be fine and 95% of the time, driver/car assigned or dispatched are there a few minutes earlier than scheduled, ready & waiting - last ride, he was sitting out by the fire hydrant, and not in a rush for us to come outside. Came up to the door steps to bring 4 bags to load into the back of the minivan.
