Thanks Jerry, the information I am more interested in is recommendations (or not) of companies. It is difficult just looking at websites to work out who is good or not (they all say they are excellent!) and wish to try to avoid a dispute, should one arise, across the "Pond".
Has anyone used or heard of "Supershuttle ExecuCar ". They seem to be the company that Expedia use, but I cannot access them until paying for the trip! ....Update, found them on Internet, anyone used them or know of them, please?

For the most part (not always of course, but for the most part) you get what you pay for with limos in NYC. The cheap options (under $50) are represented by the likes of Dial-7, the middle of the road (probably in the neighborhood of $75) by the likes of Elite (this is the one I use -- although I use public transportion and cabs 50 times for every time I use a limo service), and the expensive (probably over $100) by Carey and Dav-El.

I assume he's talking about black cars, which are licensed car services, not gypsy cabs. Licensed car services generally are more expensive than cabs and require pre-booking; it is not legal for these cars to pick up passengers who just flag them down on the street (although many do). Taxis, on the other hand, can not be pre-booked (although you certainly can agree with a cab driver to come and pick you up at a certain time) and only may pick up passengers who flag them down on the street.

Chapter 6, section 1 of TLC Rules defines a For-Hire Vehicle as:
A motor vehicle carrying passengers for-hire in the City, with a seating capacity of twenty passengers or less, excluding the driver, with three (3) or more doors, other than a taxicab, coach, wheelchair accessible van, commuter van or an authorized bus operating pursuant to applicable provisions of law, and not permitted to accept street hails from prospective passengers in the street and required to be licensed by the Commission.

We recently passed new rules that change the way livery
cabs (more commonly known as “car service cars”, “gypsy
cabs”, “black cars”, and “dollar cabs”) look and operate.
. . .
Livery cars are not allowed to pick you up on the street. They
have to be dispatched through their base.

that is often the case... can't speak for NYC much but my experience in New Jersey is almost always the same, a yellow taxi at Newark Airport will generally cost you significantly more than a private black Town Car to many of the northern NYC suburbs.
Limo Express for example charges the same flat rate anywhere you travel in Bergen County. So whether you're going to Hackensack or Mahwah its roughly $100 bux with discount given to first time users. Similar story Bergen County to Manhattan, if anyone finds this useful. (www.limoexpressnj.com or 800-221-2345) You can use a credit card for everything, and you don't need to do anything with the driver, everything is done online or over the phone, whatever makes you more comfortable.
Carey was owned by Ford Motor Company like Hertz, not sure if they still are... but they are one of the major worldwide players. Although they rely a lot of affiliates, so the car you are getting may not always be an in-house vehicle but a farm-out, typically a company that charges much less for their services when booked directly and not through Carey.
BostonCoach, EmpireCLS, and Commonwealth are some of the biggest players on the East Coast with really large fleet of new vehicles.

Anyone have experiences with Commonwealth? Or Boston Coach? I'm looking for car transfer from JFK to Midtown, preferrably S Class or 7 series, and I want a company on the higher end. Other suggestions would be welcomed too. Thank you!

They will charge about $135-140 plus tolls, tip, parking, and wait time, if any, for Meet and Greet at baggage claim in a Merc or Bim. It will probably be a bit less if you arrange to meet outside and they do not need to park and come in to the terminal. 718-236-1000
