For the most part (not always of course, but for the most part) you get what you pay for with limos in NYC. The cheap options (under $50) are represented by the likes of Dial-7, the middle of the road (probably in the neighborhood of $75) by the likes of Elite (this is the one I use -- although I use public transportion and cabs 50 times for every time I use a limo service), and the expensive (probably over $100) by Carey and Dav-El.

Speaking of town cars, can anyone answer what the deal is with the taxi-esque black town cars in Manhattna? Are they just regular taxis? (though I assume with an elevated fare)

Taxis, on the other hand, can not be pre-booked (although you certainly can agree with a cab driver to come and pick you up at a certain time) and only may pick up passengers who flag them down on the street.

I think it actually is legal for black cars to pick up street hails in some parts of the city. I forget the exact rules, but I think in Harlem and Washington Heights and the outer boroughs, it's legal.

The 2009 rules seem to prohibit for hire vehicles from accepting any street hails.

Chapter 6, section 1 of TLC Rules defines a For-Hire Vehicle as:
A motor vehicle carrying passengers for-hire in the City, with a seating capacity of twenty passengers or less, excluding the driver, with three (3) or more doors, other than a taxicab, coach, wheelchair accessible van, commuter van or an authorized bus operating pursuant to applicable provisions of law, and not permitted to accept street hails from prospective passengers in the street and required to be licensed by the Commission.

We recently passed new rules that change the way livery
cabs (more commonly known as “car service cars”, “gypsy
cabs”, “black cars”, and “dollar cabs”) look and operate.
. . .
Livery cars are not allowed to pick you up on the street. They
have to be dispatched through their base.

I stand corrected. Confusing reality with the law is always risky.

Perhaps in your lexicon. But your definition isn't the only one.

Limo Express for example charges the same flat rate anywhere you travel in Bergen County. So whether you're going to Hackensack or Mahwah its roughly $100 bux with discount given to first time users. Similar story Bergen County to Manhattan, if anyone finds this useful. (www.limoexpressnj.com or 800-221-2345) You can use a credit card for everything, and you don't need to do anything with the driver, everything is done online or over the phone, whatever makes you more comfortable.

Carey was owned by Ford Motor Company like Hertz, not sure if they still are... but they are one of the major worldwide players. Although they rely a lot of affiliates, so the car you are getting may not always be an in-house vehicle but a farm-out, typically a company that charges much less for their services when booked directly and not through Carey.

BostonCoach, EmpireCLS, and Commonwealth are some of the biggest players on the East Coast with really large fleet of new vehicles.

Anyone have experiences with Commonwealth? Or Boston Coach? I'm looking for car transfer from JFK to Midtown, preferrably S Class or 7 series, and I want a company on the higher end. Other suggestions would be welcomed too. Thank you!

For this kind of thing I use Cloverdale/Big Apple. I have been using them for more than 15 years and they have never, repeat never, missed a pickup and have been a few minutes late only a couple of times.

They will charge about $135-140 plus tolls, tip, parking, and wait time, if any, for Meet and Greet at baggage claim in a Merc or Bim. It will probably be a bit less if you arrange to meet outside and they do not need to park and come in to the terminal. 718-236-1000

Outside the areas of Manhattan where it's easy to flag a taxi, there are usually neighborhood car services that will dispatch a car with a few minutes' notice. Where I live on the Lower East Side, for example, Delancey and New Day are the predominant services (although there are a handful of others like Allen, Lower Eastside, etc.) and except at peak times or in really bad weather they'll almost always have a car outside my building with less than 5 minutes notice. I've rarely been able to get those services to pick me up outside the neighborhood, however (except at the airport).

Where do you want to be picked up?
