Welcome to FT!
There's a lot of information already provided in the forums. Take a moment to help yourself and search for the prior deals in the MR Discussion and the Community forums. There's enough info to basically provide all sorts of scenarios.
Look at these two:

Assuming the airport hasn't changed in the few years since I was last there, and assuming your flights are between continental USA and San Juan, and assuming no checked luggage, then no problem with short turn on the same aircraft on single ticket. There is no security or immigration/customs for such a journey.

Turnaround in PEK?
Hi all,
presently looking at a good deal r/t to PEK, immediate turnaround (same aircraft) first option. Anybody done that? Tried to search, but got 7-year old threads
An alternative would be short (25h) stop. Last time I read about PEK, they were about to start 48h Visa-free transit. Is that up and running now? Easy to do?

1. Confirmed interline ticket and valid visa to the third country or region (if required) are needed for entry.
1. This regulation does not apply to passengers who travel on round trip flights (e.g., Hong Kong - Beijing - Hong Kong), which means the destination and place of departure can not be the same. That is to say, only those who make transit through International Airports in one of above cities to the third country are eligible for this policy.
If you book an immediate turn, China would technically be your final destination, and they would not let you transit visa-free. I'm not 100% if this booking would allow you to transit visa free: SFO-PEK / PEK-NRT-SFO. Even though it's SFO-PEK RT. Booking an immediate turn could raise some eyebrows.

The single flaw in your scheme to use the transit-without-visa scheme is YOU ARE NOT MAKING A TRANSIT. And it's a massive flaw.
The visa-free access is to facilitate the journey of passengers using (in the most part) chinese carriers to travel between two other countries: it's not been set up for visitors to make short visits to China without visas.

All in all, if you have an attractive MR you might evaluate it with the costs of a visa - a plus to this could be the flexibility this will give you in having a day or two in Beijing.

So the fare rules price it as the RT to PEK, but your routing is:
XYZ-PEK-NRT
NRT-XYZ
So you're booked on an TYO RT, but getting the PEK fare (plus the stopover maybe $100, which in hindsight is about the same as the visa) ... Just throwing ideas out there.
