Yvr Pita!

Yep, so just got back from YVR and wow my experiences were mixed.

First time through immigrations/customs I got flagged at the counter first (for what, who knows). Had to collect my bags (didn't have any, another no-no I think) and do a secondary in an area to the side of the baggage claim.
While having a seat right outside the baggage carousel sort of prepping my "travel documents" a roaming customs agent does a spot check/mini interview on me. Where do you work? rent? income? etc etc. Same questions repeated in secondary immigrations but more probing then earlier ones. Until finally the immigration comes back after telling me to have a seat for 20 or so minutes and stamps my customs declaration form.

I think to myself okay, wasn't so bad. WRONG! The same customs guy(not immigration) which questioned me outside before I went into the secondary flags me AGAIN and then I go through the whole empty your pockets , bag etc etc. Even went through my laptop and was like "You don't have any pictures on your laptop?" Ughh, what exactly was this guy looking for? Who knows. I suppose child porn or some illegal act that I stupidly photographed and kept on my computer while crossing an international border...

Then, theres 4 days later going into YVR again. late flight, arrived close to midnight. Said I was transiting through (which I was). Waved right through...customs and immigration. I dunno maybe the night crew is laid back as seems to be the universal rule of employees IME. Beats me, maybe they can tell through their database I was A-OK from the earlier entry a few days back.

So to conclude, first time took almost 2 and a half hours after deplaning to get outside. Second time took 20 minutes, tops. Gate was far and there was lots of walking to do for the second flight. But yes, do be prepared when YVR is part of a funky itin.

Toronto Immigration

I visited Toronto for the Christmas Holiday when the dollar (US) was better. The Canadian Immigration asked me if I was coming to Canada to "preach". I was shocked, and did not answer. He asked again. I said I was a Priest and taught in a Catholic School in the USA. He asked, "What do you teach?" I told him, "English". He asked, "Why don't you teach Religion?". I answer,"Here is the phone number of my Superior, call and ask him why". I explained that I was a Religious and had taken the vow of obedience and do as I am told. I noticed he had an Irish name. I then asked, "Are you Catholic?". He said, "Have a nice day, Father"!

LHR the worst

I transited thru LHR twice in the past 2 years and to get through security took 2 hours the first time and 3 hours the second. That on top of the very high airport taxes is enough to make me avoid LHR at all costs.

Jakarta - CGK

Hi everyone, this thread also seems to refer : http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=432765.

Just thought you might like an update, seeing as I transited CGK (SYD-CGK-SIN recently. Yes, the same 4 guys were on duty at the transfer desk, and no, they couldn't issue boarding passes (I arrived QF and departed EK).

However, the experience was truly wonderful. One of the 4 guys personally escorted me up to the departures concourse, sat me down in a Starbucks lounge, took my passport and inwards BP, and said he would soon return with my new EK BP. Well, he was as good as his word, took no more than 10 mins, handed me the BP (nice aisle seat too with no-one in the middle seat) and also arranged for the departure tax to be paid (He said that my QF BP had done this). Net cost to me was zero (not counting the coffee).

So, in summary, what a marvellous experience. On the other hand, I checked out the Q for visas on arrival, and there must have been at least 50 people in it. Glad I didn't need one.

If I go again and want to stay a while, I will certainly get a visa before I arrive. Wouln't want to spend an hour or more in the Q getting one on arrival.
