OK, curious about one thing. You say LAX-SBP-SFO was a "mileage run." Normally UA jacks the price way up for connections through SBP or SBA. What sort of deal did you get? Besides the extra miles (for an elite), I also like doing the connections because you're not so "up in the air" in the EMB120, so the views can be spectacular.

Europe immigration/border patrol mileage run question
Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge about this particular question: would border patrol / immigration officers in say Frankfurt, Germany raise questions or wonder why someone entered and left their country within five hours? I was considering a mileage run towards the end of the year that would include ord-fra arriving at 9:45am then fra-ord at 12:45 pm the same day. I'm wondering if when going through passport control they'll ask how long are you staying for (4 hours) and then have to explain in English that I'm on a mileage run--and then when going through security and passport control for the flight back to the U.S answer why I just arrived at 9:45 and am turning around going home immediately. Will the language barrier be a problem in Frankfurt? I was in Geneva in January and it seemed that nobody spoke english well enough to explain something to--and in Amsterdam in February I was detained for questioning when I booked my ticket home the night before I left.
Any experience with same day international mileage runs? Please share any advice!

You'll be fine. I have entered and exited Germany for <5 hrs to use the less crowded Lufthansa first class lounge … no one cared or asked any questions. I hold a US passport, your mileage may vary.

I also hold a US passport, just don't want any problems as I've never done an international mileage run.

Just did a turn at CAI. Flew QR DOH-CAI-DOH same plane turn. Scheduled arrival was 11:30am and a schedule departure at 1:15pm, so with boarding about 1 hour on the ground.
When you arrive on the bus make an immediate left into the "transfers" area, then try to explain to the guards why you want to go back to where you came from. It took the whole hour.

This was 3 years ago; maybe it's all changed now?
The bright side? It's a fairly-modern airport, not at all like some parts of MNL.

Only complaint is that you will not have time for Eisbein mit Saurkraut und ein schoenes Bier.

And when you connect on a mileage run, you never enter the international jurisdiction proper (i.e. you don't clear customs), you are only in a transit zone, just connecting to your final destination. No one cares if it is the same destination you left from or thousands of miles away...although the GA's might look at you funny if they bother to check the whole itinerary.
