I assumed it was just because I was British and they
bore an old grudge. But it seems lots of people get a
hard time from their immigration?

outbound 13 rtr 15, ORD customs agent:"How long were you gone." Me: "I left this past Friday, only one day." Agent: (more curious)"How long?" Me: "One day." Agent: "Do you know anybody over there?" Me: "No- I also did this for a mileage run." Agent "Where did you stay at?" I showed him my hotel receipt, and stated "I'm flying to keep my status." Agent: "What status are you flying for?" Me: "I'm already at top -tier status, I flying to keep it for this year." Agent: "Did you buy your ticket online?" Me: "Yes." Agent: "Can I see your ticket receipt?" I showed it to him, he handed it back stamped the form and passport and said "Welcome home."

LHR Question (UA)
I'm considering a mileage run on UA with a 1 hour 35 minute turnaround at LHR. Of course I would stay within the transit area. To further save time, can I check in for the return at the RCC?
Thanks.
Thanks.

No it wont. But if your return is on the same ticket then you should be able to get the BP issued at your originating point in the US.
You need to go through flight connection centre anyway as no access to RCC (or any lounge) unless your BP has been stamped.

Turkey Day
Arrived at IST on BA 165 on 27 Dec 05 - approximately 4:30 pm local (flight around an hour late.)
No visa/passport control; follow "transit" signs to escalator where man looks at returning BPs (issued by BA at LHR that morning with only one raised eyebrow). Ascend escalator to departures hall. Make hurried duty-free purchases or visit small BA lounge-with-recorded-birdsong.
Returning flight called, make way to gate where extremely sensitive metal detector beeps for most anything, carry-ons x-rayed, on to plane.
Total elapsed time, 45 min.
Depart BA 162 ca. 5:30 pm.
UK passport lady did not notice previous evening's entry stamp (TLV-LHR.)
Wordy trip report here.

SJU was effortless; one hour which meant a half hour to shop souvenirs and get lunch. When I exited the incoming plane, I said hi to the gate agents who were cheerful (climate must indeed help) who immediately printed my return boarding passes so I wouldn't have to exit security.
By contrast, that morning when I checked in at EWR (that jewel in jersey's crown), the ticket agent was surly and I didn't stand a chance of getting boarding passes all the way through. So I was a bit worried, but San Juan is a nice place to be stranded for a few extra hours
Cheers
Rob

On the way to immigration go left to international transfers. They will check your BP/ticket and rescreen. Then up to departures level. If you dont already have onward BP then collect this at transfer desk. Then enjoy the rest of the time until boarding at duty free, in the airline lounge, or whatever.
