Well, have USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort been activated?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USNS_Mercy_(T-AH-19)

  • Intensive care wards: 80 beds
  • Recovery wards: 20 beds
  • Intermediate care wards: 280 beds
  • Light care wards: 120 beds
  • Limited care wards: 500 beds
  • Total Patient Capacity: 1000 beds
  • Operating Rooms: 12
I think most other ICUs are fixed structures, though I assume the military has some mobile capabilities (not sure they suitable they are for infectious disease patients that need negative pressure rooms etc., but they could perhaps take over care for regular patients and free up capacity in existing fixed structure hospitals.

My “medical staff” surge idea was based on the concern that while hotspot hospitals may have adequate staffing for their existing room capacity during normal times, they will quickly suffer from burnout (and losses due to staff themselves getting infected).

I suspect their views are probably influenced by Professor Yuen in HK who is THE expert on SARS and also one of the key persons in confirming the human to human transmission of the coronavirus. His predictions have been spot on so far. Ever since January, he has said it will be worse than SARS and something everyone should be very worried

This is Professor Yuen's latest views: https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/...ear-hong-kongs

For a more detailed background on him and also his involvement in coronavirus: https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/ea...helped-confirm

Trudeau just announced that Canada will be closing their borders to any non-Canadian citizens or PR. exceptions to air crew, diplomats, immediate family members and, for now, US citizens.

Let's ask tb - I personally see that biggest problem is lack of ICUs and Medical Ventilators - is this the case?

If so, if details of their manufacturing/production are published, how fast mass production can be established? Like 10000 per day?

I'm a physician-scientist, not an engineer, so no idea about how easy it is to manufacture ventilators. But it's not just lack of machines, but trained staff to man them that's an issue.

Honestly, I still think everyone needs to wear masks, as an altruistic act, to prevent onward transmission. The lockdown in Italy, more Draconian than anything in Korea, and coupled with a fair degree of testing and contact tracing (not as much as Korea admittedly) has not brought things under control, even after a week. Masks are cheap, easy to manufacture, can be made of cloth instead and re-usable/washable for general public, and since at least 10% of transmission and possibly up to 40% of transmission appears to be from asymptomatic individuals, probably will do more to slow the spread of COVID-19 than any other intervention...

Phone Numbers for State and Local Health Departments

Has anyone posted the "Phone Numbers for State and Local Health Departments" in the US?

I stumbled across the list on the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...epartments.pdf

Hopefully, no one needs it...

Hopefully people are using it responsibly. Same with the advice to call their primary care provider. The average "panel" size for a primary care provider in the US is 2500 patients. That's a lot of calls if, say, just 10% of them call. Also, for standard requests such as medication refill requests, if the provider has an online system (I think most larger medical groups nowadays have something like MyChart from Epic), receiving a request via that system is a lot quicker for them to process than a voicemail via an overflowing voicemail inbox.

Important takeaways:
gyms and bars will be closing. "Restaurants will only be open for take-out," she said.

She assured residents that grocery stores, banks, gas stations and pharmacies will remain open.

"There’s no need to panic," Breed said. "There’s no need to rush out to these places because they will be open.

Essential city services will still be offered.

"Your garbage will be picked up," Breed said. "Police will still be out there."

While the order is legally enforceable, SF police Chief Bill Scott says the department is asking for "voluntary compliance," adding that police enforcement would be an "absolute late resort.
