Hopefully people are using it responsibly. Same with the advice to call their primary care provider. The average "panel" size for a primary care provider in the US is 2500 patients. That's a lot of calls if, say, just 10% of them call. Also, for standard requests such as medication refill requests, if the provider has an online system (I think most larger medical groups nowadays have something like MyChart from Epic), receiving a request via that system is a lot quicker for them to process than a voicemail via an overflowing voicemail inbox.
