The 8 hours between announcement and the shut down is kinda inconsequential. I transited HKG airport on Jan 4 and already then there were loudspeaker announcements telling people with onward travel to Wuhan to avoid visiting the wet markets and urging anyone who visited Wuhan who had a fever to seek medial attention.

So the wet markets are shut down now?

Have the people who run them been fined at least?

WOW. How did this stay out of the international news for so long? it sounds like extreme irresponsibility in the early stages.

ADDED: What about wet markets elsewhere in mainland China? The one in Guangzhou was infamous for a long time and was always a tourist attraction for foreigners. [I went there about a decade ago and wasn't as shocked as I had expected to be. There are live animal markets elsewhere, including Seoul and Paris for example, although the general hygiene standards seem very different.]

I'm sure the PSB has HSR and plane records. Whether they'd let the individuals get back the records or share the records with even HK immigration department is another matter.

I don't want to worry anyone with a preliminary finding, but the claim by the Minister of the Chinese National Health Commission that the disease is infectious before patients are symptomatic is worrying https://www.scmp.com/news/china/soci...-chinas-health. I hope WHO is able to disprove that soon.

Channel New Asia first reported it on Dec 31.

The NYT had an article on in Jan 6.

And on Jan 10 it was featured in the NYT Health News Quiz.

China has now shut down all wet market and online trading in wildlife. They did the same during the SARS epidemic.

.....and this thread started January 20th, which was the first I heard of this new Corona virus or health problems in Wuhan. Somehow the two NYT articles you link/cite don't seem to have generated much attention in the USA at the time.

What are chances that they will learn their lesson this time?

This has been in the news for weeks… I remember posting about it here on Jan 2 and hearing about it before the new year.

Nobody was paying attention back then. It was pretty obvious that it was going to be pretty bad already then.

I started this FT thread on Jan 2nd: Wuhan coronavirus outbreak — worries as it spread to HK & beyond

People just weren't that worried back then.

I'd say it may be easy to identify them, but "catch" them? You can't catch over 200k people...

From my experience here and following social media I think you would be surprised how much self quarantining is going on. Granted it is more the worry of catching it rather than passing it on but the effect remains the same. Almost everywhere is closed so nobody is going out anyway.

There will of course be many thousands of selfish people like that woman in question who care little that they might pass it on, but you have to hope they are in a general minority.

I remember the early January days of 2020, back in the day, it was way more innocent times then.
