:-: Welcome to the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi Wiki! :-:
Notes: All prices are in US Dollars and are exclusive of taxes unless specified (by ++)

Tax Information
• 10% Service Charge (levied by resort. For info on this and how it's distributed, see this post)
• 16% T-GST (Tourist Goods & Services Tax, levied by the Maldivian government, current as of Jan 1, 2023). Old 2022 rate was 12%.
• Total tax is 27.2%, not 26% as one would think. Example; $100 + 10% = $110, then add 16% on to $110 for a total of $127.20.
• Tip: To work out prices before the 27.2% taxes, multiply by 0.7862, i.e; 127.2 * 0.7862 = 100
• A Green Tax of $6pp/pn (levied by the Maldivian government) has been introduced starting from 1 November 2015. Points/Redemption bookings are exempt from the tax for up to two guests per room

Booking with points
• Bookings must be cancelled 30 days prior in order to avoid one full night's charge at BAR. (some days cancellation period is 14 days check your reservation details for the exact applicable cancellation policy)
• Website and phone agents state that a cash deposit equivalent to the BAR per night will be taken when booking stays with points. This is an error. NO CASH DEPOSIT IS TAKEN WHEN MAKING A POINTS BOOKING
• Free night certificate: The phone agent states that a cash deposit equivalent to the BAR per night will be taken when booking your free night. This is an error. NO CASH DEPOSIT IS TAKEN WHEN USING YOUR FREE NIGHT CERTIFICATE
This hotel is extremely popular. Rooms are released to be booked with points about 1 year in advance. It seems to be a partially manual process so it's not an exact science. After being released those rooms get booked within a matter of minutes. If you have specific dates you want you need to book them one at a time a year in advance, or risk booking last minute. Yes that makes it hard to use the 5th night free. You can book 5 individual nights and cancel them all to rebook getting the 5th night free, but there's only about a 50% chance the rooms go back into inventory so it's risky. There is no secret, just check Hilton.com all the time. If you don't want to do that, someone else will and they'll get the rooms.

Accommodation:
At opening the resort defined Beach Villas as the lowest category of accommodation (only this category bookable with points). The next highest category was Reef Villas then above that, the Overwater Villas. Note: villas on the Private Island do not count.
This will change in 2020. Quote from the resort "Please be informed that for next year we have changed our villa category. Kindly note that the Reef Villa will be our base category, next will be the Overwater Villa and then the Beach Villa. Basically the Beach Villa will be a higher category compared to reef Villa and Overwater Villa."
See this post for the conversation related to this. Pricing has changed as well to reflect this. See below for 2020 pricing.
Note that as of August 2019 the BV is still available to book on points in 2020. This may change, however.

BMGs are brand-specific unless your BMG mentions it being applicable at any brand, in which case you can apply it to the Waldorf Maldives. If not, you can only use that one at a Hilton-branded property.

Jermyn can confirm, but I am pretty sure his BMG Cert was down to a bad Experience at the WA Trianon Palace, so he could use it at another WA.

I’m currently looking at numerous flight options and am happy to move away from OW airlines. But my current booking is FCO DOH MLE with a separate positioning flight on BA to get to Italy. Considering the current restrictions, this is a crazy routing but at least I can cancel for a voucher.

Anyhow, as I’ve already sounded out opinions on the BA pages, my question here is this. I have to hand 3 x Be our guest vouchers. As the hotel is unwilling to move my reservation, how easy would it be to add a night at the front or end of my trip? Doing so opens up many more and better value flight options.
I arrive on the 13th of June also flying on QR but I'm ex-LHR. I'm not as confident by any stretch as I think it's almost guaranteed Qatar won't be on the green list by then, and my wife won't be able to isolate on the return so all routes will need to be green for us to make the trip work. Amber is no good to me. So unless they exclude transit from the new rules, I think we're going to be SOL.

For you, I think more will hinge on Italy's views on a) people coming into the country at all and b) their views on arrivals from Qatar. Then of course you've got the UK's decision on Maldives, Qatar and Italy to all go your way - though as you're OK with Amber countries that makes it easier for you. Then you need QR/Qatar to accept travellers to the Maldives who are vaccinated don't need a PCR (assuming you're vaccinated) because if Qatar says you need one to transit there you may have timing issues with getting the test in the UK and then going to Italy before picking up your first flight with QR. Finally if Qatar goes Amber and you need a PCR test to re-enter the UK due to the transit there, will your one from MLE still be valid with the hop through Italy as well - will come down to timing.

My husband and I returned home last week after a 9-night stay at the WA, and we wish we had never left! For context, we're fairly well-traveled, and this is the only destination/resort we’ve decided to visit a second time. We were initially worried because we didn't think it would be possible to top our first (amazing) vacation, but our second vacation was even better!

Service
The exceptional level of service and attention to detail at this resort are second to none. The staff anticipate what you want and need before you even do! Cami, our personal concierge, was top-notch. Her kindness and attentiveness made our stay effortless.

The level of service provided by the resort transfer staff also stood out. The airline we flew lost all of our bags, which was an incredibly disappointing way to start our stay. Even though the resort had nothing to do with creating the problem, they worked tirelessly to resolve it - within 24 hours, our bags were located and delivered to our villa without my husband and I having to do anything! We had another issue with the same airline when checking in for our departure flight and, again, the resort transfer staff worked their magic to resolve it. We’ve seen some reviews complaining about the expense of the transfer to and from the resort, but based on our experiences, the assistance the transfer staff provided was 200% worth the cost (not to mention the yacht transfer was really nice, especially when a large pod of dolphins swam with the yacht on our way to the resort).

Villa
Our overwater villa was amazing - open, spacious, and in a secluded location. We had requested the same villa we stayed in during our first vacation, and the resort was kind enough to place us in that villa again for the duration of our 9-night stay (even though we had booked a lower room level for the last three days of our stay). We loved relaxing in the pool, laying in the nets, and watching the fish swim below. The snorkeling behind our villa was one of the highlights of our trip - every day we saw a wide array of small and large fish, sharks, rays, and turtles. Some days we would even snorkel for 2+ hours!

Sinaan, our villa attendant, was fantastic. Not only did he keep our room spotless, but every night he created an array of magical towel animals that made us smile every time we returned to our room.

Dining
The dining experiences are superb. We loved having so many options - we ate at Ledge, Shimizu, Tasting Table, Terra, Li Long, Glow, Nava, and ordered in-villa dining several times. We had hoped to dine at Yasmeen twice because we loved the food so much our first vacation, but the restaurant was unfortunately closed for renovation during our second stay.

My husband’s favorite restaurant was Li Long (specifically, the Beijing duck - a true must at this resort), and my favorites were Terra (for the food) and Glow/Amber (for overall experience/food). During our first trip we had skipped Tasting Table because that’s the venue where you eat breakfast every day so we felt like we had already “done” Tasting Table. We are so glad we didn’t skip it our second trip. The candlelit beach setting at night was awesome and totally different from the daytime. Plus, the butter chicken masala was hands down one of the tastiest dishes we ate (we ordered it once at Tasting Table and twice for in-villa dining!).

The breakfast buffet at this resort is a true standout, and an aspect of our first vacation that we literally dreamed about all year between our first and second stays. Unlike some breakfast buffets where there is a ton of selection but the food quality is just ok, the food at this buffet is incredible without sacrificing tons of choices. They offer traditional American breakfast items (eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausage), European breakfast items (croissants, pastries, cruffins, etc.), tropical fruits, a fresh juice bar, a charcuterie area (meats, cheeses, etc.), salads/healthy items, Middle Eastern breakfast items, Asian breakfast items, cereals, and a kids corner. Our list of favorites is seemingly unending - the croissants, brie, honeycomb, fig yogurt, cruffins, Berliners, stir fry noodles, labneh, etc. Except for the days where we had morning dives, we loved taking an hour or two to leisurely start our day savoring the breakfast. On our bike rides back to the villa after breakfast, we would inevitably find ourselves talking about how much we were looking forward to breakfast the next day!

One of the very few constructive criticisms we can offer the resort is the Terra dining experience. Terra was our most expensive dinner, and part of the appeal for us was to have a private, romantic, and high-end dinner. The food was incredible (my favorite food of the trip), and the initial ambience was just what we had hoped. But a couple of courses into our dinner, a “White Party” at the beach club began. The loud music blasting from the party pretty much ruined the ambience of our extremely expensive dinner. To make light of the situation, we affectionately refer to that night as “Club Terra” - that’s how loud the music was. We appreciate the restaurant staff’s apologies, but we wish one of two things had happened: (1) the beach club would have turned down the music or (2) the resort would have told us in advance about the party/music so we could have either rescheduled for another night without a party or started our dinner earlier to have finished by the time the party started. When we return for our next vacation, this is definitely an experience we feel like we need to re-do.

Activities
We became dive certified right before our second stay and had only previously dove in fresh water. We completed six ocean dives at the resort (the mandatory intro dive in the house reef, two of the morning two-tank dives, and one of the afternoon one-tank dives). We loved Lilia - she was a fantastic dive instructor who had an infectious passion for diving and enthusiasm for ocean animals. She pointed out so many different animals that we wouldn’t have otherwise spotted, including three incredible octopi! Unless you pay for a very expensive private speed boat rental, your dive site options are pretty limited. It would have been great if the resort had organized a group dive trip by speed boat to some of the more distant dive sites (like stingray city).

Another activity we booked was the night snorkel at the house reef. It was an otherworldly type of experience - the reef is completely different at night - and definitely worth doing. We’re avid snorkelers, but had never snorkeled at night. Having a guide put us at ease and helped us get so much more out of the experience.

We also booked a private sunrise photo shoot with Shutterfish (the resort photography service). Afrah, our photographer, captured the beauty and colors of the resort and produced photos of us that we adore (including some really cool creative/artsy shots). Afrah was super accommodating of the early time we requested, and he did a great job of giving us a completely different set of photos from the photos he took during our first vacation. The locations we shot at were different (second vacation: beach villa beach, lush pathways, bridges, and Terra; first vacation: resort pool, beach club, spa garden), as was the time of day (second vacation: sunrise; first vacation: sunset). Our photos are our favorite souvenirs!

Spa
The spa was a tranquil oasis. We didn’t schedule any treatments during our first stay, but my husband scheduled the signature 90-minute starlight ocean couple massage for my birthday during our second stay. It was hands down the best massage we’ve ever had, and it was an experience unlike any other with the open air, sound of the waves, starlight, etc. An absolute must that was worth every penny - we’re looking forward to scheduling the same massage on our next vacation and adding on other treatments.

Special Occasion
During this second stay, we celebrated my birthday at the resort. Cami, Sinaan, and the staff at Glow and Tasting Table went out of their way to make it such a special experience. When we arrived at breakfast, the Tasting Table staff had reserved a private beachside pavilion for us that was decorated with tropical flowers and champagne. When we ate dinner at Glow, the chef made a birthday cake and came to our table to talk to us and wish me a happy birthday. When we returned to the villa that night, we discovered that our villa attendant had left a beautiful flower-filled birthday message on the bed, balloons, fresh strawberries, and the cutest towel monkey. All of these touches were so thoughtful and really made for a wonderful day.

Summary
We don’t think we’ll ever find an island resort that tops our Waldorf Astoria Maldives experiences. We can’t wait to return for a third vacation (praying we'll score another points booking)! Hope this review helps - let me know if you have any questions.

I have actually managed to switch my flight to BA when the new schedules were released. I have managed to bag rewards in J on the way out and suffering Y on the return, unless some availability pops up. I was able to get a cash refund on my BA positioning flights to FCO and will convert my QR ticket to a voucher. So for the first time I am confident of being able to travel. As you mention, I think your situation is tricky. Will QR move from red to green? As you say, unlikely.

My BA direct flight is going out a day earlier, so as you can see from my comments up thread, my current issue is persuading the hotel to accept my 'Be my Guest certificate' for an additional night.

Reaching out for advise on this thread. If I don't have any joy with getting them to accept the voucher, can anyone suggest a hotel for the first night. I see the SaII from Hilton but my understanding is that as this is on another island it would require a further PCR test ?

As you mention, I think your situation is tricky. Will QR move from red to green? As you say, unlikely.

My BA direct flight is going out a day earlier, so as you can see from my comments up thread, my current issue is persuading the hotel to accept my 'Be my Guest certificate' for an additional night.

Reaching out for advise on this thread. If I don't have any joy with getting them to accept the voucher, can anyone suggest a hotel for the first night. I see the SaII from Hilton but my understanding is that as this is on another island it would require a further PCR test ?
This was the issue I had. The WA want a new PCR if you're transferring from another resort so one night wouldn't work. I could switch to BA as I have GGL Jokers to open up the business class, but with it being only on fixed days that isn't ideal either.

I reckon we'll end up binning this trip entirely and booking one of the absolutely daft travel agent rates somewhere (or even at the WA - was quoted $8k for 7 nights half board from a Maldivian TA recently in a Reef Villa) but later in the year.

You got Hilton BMG certificates , to be used at a Hilton Hotel (probably because something went wrong during previous stays at a Hilton) and want to use these certificates at the WA.
As the BMGs are billed to the hotel(s), that messed up your stay(s), you expect these Hilton(s) (that probably cost a fraction of the price , compared to the WA) to pay your stay at WA Ithaafushi?

Should be no problem, e.g. Treetop Hospital in Hulhumale offers express PCR, which will only take a few hours (regular PCR Test 12hours) at additional cost. Depending on which resort you are staying, the resort doctor will take the sample, shortly before the next boat or seaplane is going back to MLE, Hospital representative will pick up the sample at Seaplane Terminal or Jetty and take it to Hospital for Express testing

For reference, Hilton confirmed on the phone they are good for Waldorf. They have asked it be left for them to come back to me so I'll happily report the result.

I doubt these will be billed to the hotels as these vouchers were offered when the hotel cancelled the stay and didn't refund me.

Has anyone seen any reef villas getting released for next year other than the few weeks of January that were released quite some time ago?

Looks like they just released a "live unforgettable" sale that includes your transfer fee and half board for $1631/night but you have to book at least 4 nights. Still no standard award availability though. I have a total of 6 nights booked, still looking for 1 night in between those two points bookings. I wonder if I can sweet talk them into at least waiving my transfer fee or throwing in dinner if I have to pay cash for that one night that I need.

The rate shows up as an option if you try to book at least 4 nights on the Hilton website. It shows up for May and June when I looked, but will probably be there for most of the low season.

When I was there, the only option (free) was to play with the gentleman who is in charge of the yachts as hitting partner (he used to be a tennis coach, from Qatar). Very nice guy. But I heard they are bringing in a former pro as coach, was just waiting to clear quarantine when I was there.

There is one court. If I am not mistaken, just using it is free. Lessons will of course cost something, but because that wasn't available at the time, I don't know how much.
