Didn't they learn this from watching the situation in Japan?
Yesterday news report (I closed the browser before I copy the link) had a passenger on board telling a reporter:
1. No one is taking temperature
2. Passengers are told to use buffet only "as a precaution"
3. Casino and theaters are open as normal.

I hope that at tomorrow's meeting with cruise industry CEO's, Mike Pence delivers an order for a minimum 2-month shutdown and cancellation of further departures, effective immediately. If he can't do that, he needs to require each cruise line put up $50 million each per ship that remains in service, deposit to cover services rendered when the ship gets into COVID-19 related trouble. It's galling to expect US taxpayers to bail out a pleasure-oriented, non-essential industry.

Put them on some buses, and give the bus drivers BSL-4 suits. Drive them to open flat land in the Central Valley, and set up tents, spaced around 30m apart. That's way preferable to being stuck on a floating Petri dish as it should at least prevent further spread.

If there's anything worse than figuring out where to put thousands of people for quarantine, it is figuring out where to put thousands of infected people, which is what's going to happen in short order if someone on the ship has it and they don't get everyone off.

other (later) reports say that they were all asked to go to their staterooms and that food is being delivered by room service:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/healt...3a7_story.html
‘Egan said her father told her that while evening entertainment had been canceled and passengers were not allowed to serve themselves at the buffet, until Thursday, passengers had still been allowed to wander the ship and congregate freely. But in a message over the public-address system on Thursday, guests were told they needed to stay in their staterooms “for the remainder of the cruise,” in accordance with CDC recommendations. That update about the developments aboard the ship came via a YouTube channel featuring two women who have been live-streaming portions of their vacation.’

good luck to her. What a way to start a medical career.

DHS secretary was asked in congressional hearing why they are leaving the ship off shore.

(same WaPo article)

’Cuccinelli defended the decision, saying there is not enough capacity on land to quarantine large numbers of passengers. Cuccinelli said that if the Diamond Princess quarantine had been implemented better, the virus would not have spread as widely as it did on the ship. “That was not a successful quarantine situation,” he said.’

Exactly. My suggestion was to rent wholesale motels along I-5. They all have their own little A/C units. Half the pax are apparently from CA; many could presumably be transported home and quarantined there.

Am I the only one who is shocked and outraged that over two months into this situation there is no plan to quarantine/isolate large groups of people? The Wuhan Princess docked in Yokohama over a month ago. Did no one think “I know we have a dozen more ships cruising off the US coast; what are we going to do if someone gets sick on those?”
Hoyaheel and wrp96 like this.

Bhutan just banned all tourists for two weeks. I was supposed to arrive on this coming Monday but cancelled a few weeks back because of logistical complications arising from COVID. Going to see if I can get some further refunds based on this.

Pence: 46 tests on grand princess performed. 21 tested positive (19 crew, 2 pax).

Added: not 100% clear what the plan is for the ship. I think they said they would dock it at a non-commercial port (navy/coast guard dock?) and test all people currently aboard. It sounded like they plan on moving the pax to military bases and quarantine the crew onboard.

They're idiots if they try to quarantine anyone onboard unless they want 800 more cases in the next 14 days.

Problem is there's nowhere to put them.

San Francisco doesn't have 4000 hotel rooms or places to house them while they test and if necessary, quarantine them.

Well Boeing has an S load of 737 Max's sitting around. Those could serve as a temporary place of quarantine.

As I said, put them in tents on some open land. Somewhere like here: https://www.google.com/maps/@37.7866.../data=!3m1!1e3

Use physical separation to keep the virus from spreading. That's at least half a square mile right there.

US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Coronavirus Disease 2019 website

The US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has a website about the disease: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Older FTers should note that "Early data suggest older people are twice as likely to have serious COVID-19 illness" according to the page People at Higher Risk for COVID-19 Complications.

Given that N95 masks are in short supply, is it feasible to reuse them? I would only wear them when taking public transportation to and from work so 1 hour each day. I was thinking of spraying aerosolized disinfectant on them. Seems better than wiping or washing them. Stupid idea?

Not reusable. Don't do it. Masks don't help in preventing you from getting it, only from you spreading it.
