Wiki/How-To/FAQ: Start here if this is your first time visiting this thread
If you have done this trip please help improve the wiki!

Why would a DL SkyPesos member do this now that RDMs are earned on ticket cost?

Either for the MQMs, or to actually visit SIN FWIW there are posts in the thread about similar itineraries on AA.

How do I search for dates/prices?

One way is to use ITA Matrix. Click on "Advanced routing codes" and enter something along the lines of:
  • outbound: dl+ dtw nrt
  • inbound: dl+ nrt dtw

NOTE: Basic Economy (E) fares have been spotted on this route and come with heavy restrictions. If you want to exclude E fares from your search you can add f ~bc=e in the separate "extension codes" box

See post 1329 for some screenshots (which are now out of date, the routing codes and extension code have been split into two separate input boxes)

You may wish to experiment with things like dtw,atl or x or even x+. Read the advanced routing codes help for more ideas. (DL no longer flies JFK-NRT nonstop)

I found an itinerary that works for me, how do I book it?
  • you can try a multi-city booking on Kayak or Google Flights and click through to Delta (you can save some effort by omitting the implicit/forced connection through NRT for example)
  • if you are comfortable installing add-ons etc. you can use the ITA userscript (see the wiki at the top of that thread)
  • for the less technically-inclined there is also the Book with Matrix helper site (and its related FT thread)
  • call in if none of the above methods work or e.g. you want to add a stopover

Do I need a visa?

No visa is needed for transits (or in fact for visiting up to 90 days, subject to qualifications)
You can get your boarding passes for your Delta return flight at Transit Lounge D, which opens 3 hours before departure.

What are the best seats?

Assuming you're stuck in Y (no GUCs etc.)

Master A330-300 (A333) Best Seats Thread

Will there be wifi on the international legs?

DL now touts International Wi-Fi is available on 100% of all wide body, long-haul aircraft providing near global coverage. Given "long-haul" this may not apply to NRT-SIN.

777s should all have wifi: thread #1, thread #2; although it is still subject to coverage/availability, seems to drop out in the far northern parts of the route, and coming down the Russian coast it seemed like http was slow but working and anything else like https took forever and/or was blocked

Delta doesn't seem to sell the Gogo global day pass on their web site but you can buy it directly from Gogo. You can use the same pass on both domestic and international flights in any order as long as it is within 24 hours.

FlexPerks VISA single-flight passes can NOT be used on international flights (they do not appear as a redemption choice when you sign in to Gogo in flight)

SIN airport facilities

If you are doing a quick turn, you can remain airside the whole time. There are a number of 24-hour food outlets in the transit mall areas (center of each terminal)

Each of the 3 terminals has their Transit Hotel on Level 3. Prices are similar for all:
-Terminal 1 - Plaza Premium Lounge recently opened Aerotel. Book at: Aerotel Terminal 1
-Terminal 2 and 3 - Harilela Hospitality runs an Ambassador Transit Hotel in each Terminal, above the Orchid Garden and Movie Theater, respectively. Book at: Ambassador Transit Hotels

Note that you can actually stay in either of the 3, regardless of which Terminal you arrive in. However, when leaving the airport, you need to exit through the same Terminal as that you arrived in.

FT thread on Singapore Airport Lounges

Airport website links:
NOTE: even though the DNATA Sky View lounge lists "Delta Airlines" on the airport web page and appears on a skyteam.com lounge search, it is considered by Delta to be third-party-operated, thus if you are STE+ in Y you will not have access. People have reported gaining access on an upgrade to J but YMMV.

There is free wifi either by receiving a text message code, or by scanning your passport. Previous posts mention just giving an email address, maybe try at the info desks. There are also free Internet stations.

NOTE for U.S. and other ~110V travelers: Singapore uses 230V/50Hz. There are plenty of USB charging ports in the seating areas, and most wall adapters for electronics these days are dual voltage (look for writing on the plug like "Input: 100V-240V") but if not or if you need to plug something else in, bring plug and voltage adapters to be safe.

Things to do in SIN

In descriptions of things to see/do airside, when you see "garden" read "smoking area" especially if you won't be there during daylight, the only other main reason people go there is to smoke.

SkyTrain between terminals runs from 5am-2:30am but you can always walk between any of the terminals as well.

Returning to the US

Even if you don't have Global Entry, CBP has a Mobile Passport Control app -- see program info and app website for d/l and list of participating airports which includes ATL (but not DTW)

You will have to pick up checked bags if any, and then everyone has to go through TSA security. International connections usually have their own checkpoint but it may not have PreCheck or CLEAR. If you want to take advantage of either of these, see airport-specific info below.

Through Delta's partnership CLEAR is free for DM, $79 for other Medallions, and $99 for General Members. Click here for more info on the partnership or to sign up.

Relevant FT threads:
Returning via ATL:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Atlanta (ATL): The Definitive Thread

CLEAR is now open in ATL but only at the domestic end.

For PreCheck, if you arrive in F, when you exit the hallway from customs there is a ticket desk in front of you. Normally the belt for re-checking bags on the left, and TSA screening beyond that. For PreCheck turn instead to the right (away from the drop-off luggage belt) and exit into the arrivals area, go up the escalators, and then you use the regular F terminal security checkpoint.

(It seems like NRT-ATL usually lands in E though... anyone have info to share?)

Returning via DTW:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Detroit (DTW): The Definitive Thread

When you exit customs normally you are directed to the right for rescreening. For PreCheck or CLEAR exit to the left as if you are an local Detroit arriving passenger and you will see some escalators in front of you. Go up 3 sets of escalators (there is a security checkpoint after the 2nd set but it does not have PreCheck). There is also an elevator.

The configuration as of Jan 2017 was, CLEAR without PreCheck was near the top of the escalators. If you have both CLEAR and PreCheck, there is a separate CLEAR lane on the right.

Duty Free Liquids

This post from 2014 says liquor etc must be checked as they cannot pass through screening in NRT/TSA. However this may have changed since then, and duty-free purchases in a Sealed Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) might be permitted:

I have been looking at running the SFO - MSP - SIN variant of this MR. I cant get DL.Dumb to price it right. I get to checkout and the price jumps up $400. Anyone have the same issue? Would this qualify under the best price guarantee if I book the $1,300 ticket, and send in the quote from Kayak and Delta.Dumb showing the $900 price for the same flights?

What dates? I don't know whether the best fare guarantee would work, but try DTW instead of MSP on the return (or both directions), for example $903 on Kayak starting the Saturday before Thanksgiving with an overnight stay and stays ($902.50) after clicking through.

Starting leg 3 HKG INC DXH

Starting leg3 HKG INC DXB

Waiting in lounge at HKG kAL very ordinary, food choices meager, Quantas was much better in MEL and Garuda better in CGK. Hope it is better in INC as we have about 6 hrs there. Wife said 2 days was enuff for HKG. Wed is good day to visit history and science museum as they are free on Wed. Too many people and crowded walkiNg around in main part of town and shopping areas. Where we are staying near Clear Water Bay is much nicer and away from town which is too crowded. Only in DXB for 2 nights but have 2 presentations and than on to FCO Rome.

It is frustratIng when getting tickets to have price jump as some of you have said. If it happens try different dates and try going thru DTW and see if that helps you get the routing you want.

Pouring rain on arrival in HKG but better weather the past 2 days.
Happy Travels! Cheers!

Waiting in INC

Lounge better with better food choices. Spacious and roomy have 7 hour layover here. KE 747-400 UD not full, not lie flat seats but comfortable, in front at bulkhead, only chore is taking carry on up the narrows stairs bur FA offer to help. Airport very nice, will explore. They do offer free tours from 1-5 hours depending on length of layover. Shortest are to nearby Bhuddist temples and others into Seoul for shopping if you have enough time. No priority line for security at transfer area. A bit slow but line was less than 10. Had 4 lines. Anxious to be on our way.

Checkin and security at HKG, don't go early as you will have to wait to check in if you arrive 3.5 hours before scheduled departure.

Happy Travels! Cheers!

Will try again but this is from CDG

Message written at FCO never got thru so here is summary
2 days in HKG no visa if US passport but will need for any other place in China, considered Special Administrative Region. Wed is free for visits to history and science museums. Interesting. Once you figure out bus and MTR (subway) it is quite easy to get around. KAL lounge in INC very nice And service on KAL was very good. Flight to DBX comfortable in J, grateful to not be in Y which is where we often are.
2 days in DXB, have 2 presentations on first day after arrival and leave late evening of last day but get to see Dubai mall, huge but huge aquarium visible on ground floor and than get to go up Burj Khalifa, tallest building in world at 829.8 m or 2722 feet. Public can get up to 145 floor, 2 elevators needed, first to 125 floor 1 minute at 10 m/ sec Great view, look detai on Google if you want more info. Big changes in country in last 20 years. One shopping mall has indoor skiing.
2 days in Rome St Peters, Capitoline Hill and its monuments, Mamertine prison (under repair) where tradition says Paul and Peter were imprisoned, Roman Forun, Coliseum and Trevi Fountain (under repair)

Now on to UK. AF Lounge at CDG very very nice with many food choices spacious. Came by offering chocolate and champagne which I declined.
Looking forward to UK and Argentina where will have more time.

Happy Travels! Cheers!

I bit the bullet and booked this ex-SFO over Thanksgiving week, starting with the red-eye on Monday 11/23. I scanned most of the thread history* and have a couple questions:

1. I am, sadly, doing the 6-hour immediate turn; it seems like my flight times if converted into US/Pacific vaguely align with normal waking hours, so I am entertaining the fantasy of staying awake all the way JFK-NRT (wifi would be a plus but I can do work on my laptop without it) and trying to sleep on the NRT-SIN leg. The SIN layover is roughly 10a-5p California time so I was thinking of skipping the transit hotel reservation and just wandering around looking at the airport exhibits etc., stay awake for SIN-NRT (arrives ~11pm in Calif-equivalent time) and sleep NRT-JFK. Is this do-able or delusional? (I'm currently GM but expect to hit PM by end-of-October so should have a pretty good shot at a C+ seat?)

2. Is 1h10m is plenty of time to connect in NRT?

3. I infer from some of the past threads that if you are remaining airside, though you do not need to clear customs, there is still some type of security check at both SIN and NRT in the homeward direction, and that as either a direct or indirect consequence duty-free liquor purchased in SIN cannot be left in carry-on when transiting NRT?

*would a top-of-thread wiki be a good idea? I saved links to specific posts with advice and/or trip reports with the eye towards creating a wiki once I have ~20 more FT posts under my belt and I can actually edit one but if anyone else wants to create it now I'd be happy to PM or post here what I have (currently mostly a set of links sorted roughly into categories, had planned to do some more editing/collation at some point first)

Would sleep on plane if you are able. Changi is an interesting airport to explore with free wifi and places to eat and orchid displays, theater (free) and other things to do. You can get your boarding passes for return flights at Transit desk 3 hours before scheduled departure. EC is definitely more comfortable get aisle or bulkhead seat drink lots of water and walk around during flight.

2. Is 1h10m is plenty of time to connect in NRT?

Yes, has never been a problem

Correct. You will have security checks in both SIN and NRT both times. No large bottles of liquid in carry on will pass. Once thru security in NRT you can purchase as long as your journey terminates in SFO or LAX if you go beyond will need to put in checked luggage to final destination.

Great idea, have you read all the posts? If you have more ? let me know. In London one more day than off to Argentina LHR FCO EZE on Alitalia.

Not delusional at all. I did this last year. Assuming your inbound flight is on time: just walk outside and negotiate with the taxi driver a set price IN ADVANCE to drive you around to various sights and so you can get out and take pictures. I did this on a weeknight because by the time we got in around midnight, some of the iconic bars/clubs/restaurants were closed. If you come in on a Friday or Saturday night, you could go to one until 2a or closing time and then hit one or two photo spots before heading back to the airport. Completely doable. It's a thrill. Enjoy.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions -- although my "do-able or delusional" was more a question of whether anyone else had done the consciously-stay-on-US-time approach

I am doing this MR Saturday Oct 17th on flight 167, returning the 19th on 166 after a 6 hour turn. Undecided if I'll leave the airport or not. Anyone else on those flights?

EZE at lasr

On bus in Argentina, have wifi. Long trip FCO EZE 13:58 6,938 miles. 6 hr bus ride from EZE to destination. Bus ride about 6.5 hours just found out they have wifi and am trying to get message off before arrival. AZ Alitalia FA service very good, 777-200ER comfortable seats 1-2-1 seating lie flat in J. Plane quite full glad not in Y, looked like they have EC which is definitely better than Y. Sky team lounge in LHR nice and good food selection, near gate spotted a BA Concorde in distance got pix with 200 mm lens on taxi to runway on wrong side of plane to get better pix.

Happy Travels. Cheers!
