Wiki/How-To/FAQ: Start here if this is your first time visiting this thread
If you have done this trip please help improve the wiki!

Why would a DL SkyPesos member do this now that RDMs are earned on ticket cost?

Either for the MQMs, or to actually visit SIN FWIW there are posts in the thread about similar itineraries on AA.

How do I search for dates/prices?

One way is to use ITA Matrix. Click on "Advanced routing codes" and enter something along the lines of:
  • outbound: dl+ dtw nrt
  • inbound: dl+ nrt dtw

NOTE: Basic Economy (E) fares have been spotted on this route and come with heavy restrictions. If you want to exclude E fares from your search you can add f ~bc=e in the separate "extension codes" box

See post 1329 for some screenshots (which are now out of date, the routing codes and extension code have been split into two separate input boxes)

You may wish to experiment with things like dtw,atl or x or even x+. Read the advanced routing codes help for more ideas. (DL no longer flies JFK-NRT nonstop)

I found an itinerary that works for me, how do I book it?
  • you can try a multi-city booking on Kayak or Google Flights and click through to Delta (you can save some effort by omitting the implicit/forced connection through NRT for example)
  • if you are comfortable installing add-ons etc. you can use the ITA userscript (see the wiki at the top of that thread)
  • for the less technically-inclined there is also the Book with Matrix helper site (and its related FT thread)
  • call in if none of the above methods work or e.g. you want to add a stopover

Do I need a visa?

No visa is needed for transits (or in fact for visiting up to 90 days, subject to qualifications)
You can get your boarding passes for your Delta return flight at Transit Lounge D, which opens 3 hours before departure.

What are the best seats?

Assuming you're stuck in Y (no GUCs etc.)

Will there be wifi on the international legs?

DL now touts International Wi-Fi is available on 100% of all wide body, long-haul aircraft providing near global coverage. Given "long-haul" this may not apply to NRT-SIN.

777s should all have wifi: thread #1, thread #2; although it is still subject to coverage/availability, seems to drop out in the far northern parts of the route, and coming down the Russian coast it seemed like http was slow but working and anything else like https took forever and/or was blocked

Delta doesn't seem to sell the Gogo global day pass on their web site but you can buy it directly from Gogo. You can use the same pass on both domestic and international flights in any order as long as it is within 24 hours.

FlexPerks VISA single-flight passes can NOT be used on international flights (they do not appear as a redemption choice when you sign in to Gogo in flight)

SIN airport facilities

If you are doing a quick turn, you can remain airside the whole time. There are a number of 24-hour food outlets in the transit mall areas (center of each terminal)

Each of the 3 terminals has their Transit Hotel on Level 3. Prices are similar for all:
-Terminal 1 - Plaza Premium Lounge recently opened Aerotel. Book at: Aerotel Terminal 1
-Terminal 2 and 3 - Harilela Hospitality runs an Ambassador Transit Hotel in each Terminal, above the Orchid Garden and Movie Theater, respectively. Book at: Ambassador Transit Hotels

Note that you can actually stay in either of the 3, regardless of which Terminal you arrive in. However, when leaving the airport, you need to exit through the same Terminal as that you arrived in.

FT thread on Singapore Airport Lounges

Airport website links:
NOTE: even though the DNATA Sky View lounge lists "Delta Airlines" on the airport web page and appears on a skyteam.com lounge search, it is considered by Delta to be third-party-operated, thus if you are STE+ in Y you will not have access. People have reported gaining access on an upgrade to J but YMMV.

There is free wifi either by receiving a text message code, or by scanning your passport. Previous posts mention just giving an email address, maybe try at the info desks. There are also free Internet stations.

NOTE for U.S. and other ~110V travelers: Singapore uses 230V/50Hz. There are plenty of USB charging ports in the seating areas, and most wall adapters for electronics these days are dual voltage (look for writing on the plug like "Input: 100V-240V") but if not or if you need to plug something else in, bring plug and voltage adapters to be safe.

Things to do in SIN

In descriptions of things to see/do airside, when you see "garden" read "smoking area" especially if you won't be there during daylight, the only other main reason people go there is to smoke.

SkyTrain between terminals runs from 5am-2:30am but you can always walk between any of the terminals as well.

Returning to the US

Even if you don't have Global Entry, CBP has a Mobile Passport Control app -- see program info and app website for d/l and list of participating airports which includes ATL (but not DTW)

You will have to pick up checked bags if any, and then everyone has to go through TSA security. International connections usually have their own checkpoint but it may not have PreCheck or CLEAR. If you want to take advantage of either of these, see airport-specific info below.

Through Delta's partnership CLEAR is free for DM, $79 for other Medallions, and $99 for General Members. Click here for more info on the partnership or to sign up.

Relevant FT threads:
Returning via ATL:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Atlanta (ATL): The Definitive Thread

CLEAR is now open in ATL but only at the domestic end.

For PreCheck, if you arrive in F, when you exit the hallway from customs there is a ticket desk in front of you. Normally the belt for re-checking bags on the left, and TSA screening beyond that. For PreCheck turn instead to the right (away from the drop-off luggage belt) and exit into the arrivals area, go up the escalators, and then you use the regular F terminal security checkpoint.

(It seems like NRT-ATL usually lands in E though... anyone have info to share?)

Returning via DTW:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Detroit (DTW): The Definitive Thread

When you exit customs normally you are directed to the right for rescreening. For PreCheck or CLEAR exit to the left as if you are an local Detroit arriving passenger and you will see some escalators in front of you. Go up 3 sets of escalators (there is a security checkpoint after the 2nd set but it does not have PreCheck). There is also an elevator.

The configuration as of Jan 2017 was, CLEAR without PreCheck was near the top of the escalators. If you have both CLEAR and PreCheck, there is a separate CLEAR lane on the right.

Duty Free Liquids

This post from 2014 says liquor etc must be checked as they cannot pass through screening in NRT/TSA. However this may have changed since then, and duty-free purchases in a Sealed Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) might be permitted:

http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/secu...ection_ss.html

Hope you get your bag in SIN and are able to keep it with you on your return. After you pick up your bag in SIN you probably will have to exit and won't be able get back thru immigration and security until you get a boarding pass which will be about 3 hours before your departure when check in counter opens so you might consider taking taxi into town to look around. Only things open will be hawker centers or food courts and Mustafa Centre on Serangoon Road for shopping, reasonable prices, big like Walmart, good for luggage, electronic accessories (plugs, adapters, earphones, chargers, etc) watches (Casio, Seiko, Citizen, have never priced the expensive ones), souvenirs etc. After midnight there is 50% surcharge on metered taxi fares. Ive done it I think 2 or 3 times over the past 2 years when prices are really good, so far all in coach. its VERY brutal i know Praying to clear this time
I'll have to remember to add the LAX segments next time. I've done this once a year every year since 2010, the year of the great double MQM/RDM promo for flights out of STL, BNA, RDU, and SLC. I lived in Seattle then and routed myself through RDU, racking up around 45,000 MQM and 90,000 RDM (there were additional RDM bonuses besides the double miles). Sigh...those were the good old days.

Singapore is well worth a visit; it's not all high rises and shopping. And it has some of the best food in the world!

Good luck using the GUCs! I'm so envious; I truly wouldn't mind flying all those hours in D1. The only year I might have made DM was after that double MQM run, but I opted to stop short with PM and take a 49,000 rollover. For me, as a leisure traveler, that made more sense.

There's at least one hawker centre, maybe two, not too far from the airport (but a taxi ride, not walking). I expect airport staff would know. Singaporeans LOVE to talk about food!

Ive found that dropping the LAX-JFK leg only saves about $150, so id rather get the extra MQM out of it. Plus the first 2 times i did the run were pre-skypeso nurf so netting ~50k RDM and using 25k for a position flight made it a easy deal. And back then they used the 747 JFK-NRT and the departure was late enough i could arrive at JFK in the morning and go spend several hours in town before heading back to catch the plane. Sadly now theres not quite enough time to easily do it and the whole trip nets so few RDM....

Great job with the double miles/mqm! I sadly never was able to take advantage of those. Really wish I had! I was in the same boat a couple months back debating rollover vs hitting DM. Though this year ive had next to no travel so its been a interesting game for me to see if i can get DM without flying much, and i did! This run will get me to 150ish so 25k rollover, figure a couple months to get 1 or 2 of the boosts next year gets me gold, 1 run if i want to gets me PM early in the year.

Ok, I'll give a fairly complete trip report now and update if anything happens on the return. I actually did the MR with one day in Singapore, giving me basically a 30hr layover. NRT-SIN was delayed on Tuesday night, so it wasn't until almost 2am Wednesday that I went through Immigration and got my bag. Everything was fine, but as Csfing1 correctly points out, once I got my bag I had to leave airside. I will make sure I don't let the GA gate check my bag next time, what a hassle.
I went to T3 and used The Haven lounge. It is landside and offers 3 hrs free with Priority Pass (they were fairly strict about the 3 hours - "please check out by 5:15am" ok...). But it included a shower and a meal from their menu. The Thai Curry was quite good. Alcoholic drinks are extra, but there is a good selection of soda, tea, and espresso machine. I would definitely visit this lounge again if I was stuck landside at Changi.
After that, I took Csfing1's recommendation and went to Moustafa Center. Got some cheap souvenirs and snacks to take home (green tea pocky, anyone?). I also went to City Square Mall and had lunch there - the food court is huge. Around noon, I broke down and booked a hotel room nearby, as I was getting very tired.
After a nap, I went to explore Marina Bay. The Sands hotel is impressive, and the attached shopping mall and casino would rival Caesar's Palace in Vegas. When it got dark, I went to explore the Gardens by the Bay. They are really pretty when lit at night and free to the public. I would highly recommend this if you are in town for the evening. Took MRT there, very easy. I forgot the MRT stops at midnight, so I had to take a taxi back into town, but it was a reasonable $8 even with the 50% surcharge.
Getting ready to head back to Changi for the return. I would note that I was able to print a boarding pass at T-24, but the pass specifically says this is not valid for immigration without a DOCS-OK stamp, so I assume it is basically useless for getting back airside. I had wanted to go catch a movie at the Changi Theater, but I'll save that for another MR...

Thanks for your post. Am glad you were reunited with your bag and took the time to see some of SIN and took the time to go to Mustafa Centre, my favorite store in SIN as I am not one for branded goods in expensive stores. Hope your journey back was safe and uneventful. Looking forward to my return to SIN in about 3 weeks but have a 3 day visit to LAS for a medical meeting Nov 15-17. Let us know how the rest of you journey goes.

Great to hear from you again. As long as people read and comment, ask questions and contribute I will do my best to continue and your comments are always welcomed. Wish we were making another MR Thanksgiving week but that isn't needed this year. Did a MR early in the year early Feb with my wife LAX JFK SIN JFK LAX for our 25,096 MQM and as far as MQD I get the waiver with AMX as I won't get enough MQD. Will be DM for at least another year and have been since it came out. Will have made 4 trips to SIN by the end of the year. One on the way to India ATQ and the other one the way to DPS Bali and KCH Malaysia. There has been a change in Dec will going to BKK instead of KCH. Will try to give a summary of RTW trip as soon as I add up the details. 41,793 miles, wish they were MQM, in 87:02:22 hours of flight time, avg speed 480.16 mph in 36 days with my wife. We enjoyed it but we're glad to get home.

Happy Travels! Get your quadrivalent Flu shot! Cheers!

Update on SIN transit hotel

I'm half way through my short vacation/MR so can give some new information about the SIN airside hotel situation. The former Ambassador Transit Hotel has been renovated and is under new management as the Aerotel Transit Hotel. The previously somewhat tired, Motel 6-ish looking rooms are now fresh, crisp, and contemporary. The price has gone up a few dollars; a single with private bath (they also have budget rooms with shared bath) is now S$90 (US$63) for a six hour block of time, with additional fees for each additional hour. You can get to the hotel website via the Changi Airport website. I had trouble with booking on-line but was able to send an email to make my reservation.

Aerotel now has a landside hotel at the airport also, which could be a good option for the night before that early morning SIN-NRT departure for those that don't do an immediate turnaround. The airside hotel staff didn't know any details about it but I'll see what I can find out when I head back in a couple of days.

I have couple of questions. Appreciate your help

1) Is one hour transit time enough at JFK? Thinking of flying out of ATL that lands at 10.30AM at JFK. Flight for NRT leaves at 12.30 PM. Wondering if this is too close. Do I need to clear security again?

2) Also is one hour transit time enough at NRT? I hold US Passport.

I am sure tempted to take a quick run by the end of the year. Anyone have something planned? I'd have to re-position out of MSP. Going to be short of Plat this year by about 16K miles.

2) Also is one hour transit time enough at NRT? I hold US Passport.
Transit times are adequate unless your plane is more than 20 min late, at NRT they usually hold if it is close so you can make it, at JFK walk fast if you are late depends how far away the next gate is. Enjoy your trip! Happy Travels! Cheers! Get your Flu shot.
