Wiki/How-To/FAQ: Start here if this is your first time visiting this thread
If you have done this trip please help improve the wiki!

Why would a DL SkyPesos member do this now that RDMs are earned on ticket cost?

Either for the MQMs, or to actually visit SIN FWIW there are posts in the thread about similar itineraries on AA.

How do I search for dates/prices?

One way is to use ITA Matrix. Click on "Advanced routing codes" and enter something along the lines of:
  • outbound: dl+ dtw nrt
  • inbound: dl+ nrt dtw

NOTE: Basic Economy (E) fares have been spotted on this route and come with heavy restrictions. If you want to exclude E fares from your search you can add f ~bc=e in the separate "extension codes" box

See post 1329 for some screenshots (which are now out of date, the routing codes and extension code have been split into two separate input boxes)

You may wish to experiment with things like dtw,atl or x or even x+. Read the advanced routing codes help for more ideas. (DL no longer flies JFK-NRT nonstop)

I found an itinerary that works for me, how do I book it?
  • you can try a multi-city booking on Kayak or Google Flights and click through to Delta (you can save some effort by omitting the implicit/forced connection through NRT for example)
  • if you are comfortable installing add-ons etc. you can use the ITA userscript (see the wiki at the top of that thread)
  • for the less technically-inclined there is also the Book with Matrix helper site (and its related FT thread)
  • call in if none of the above methods work or e.g. you want to add a stopover

Do I need a visa?

No visa is needed for transits (or in fact for visiting up to 90 days, subject to qualifications)
You can get your boarding passes for your Delta return flight at Transit Lounge D, which opens 3 hours before departure.

What are the best seats?

Assuming you're stuck in Y (no GUCs etc.)
Picking a seat (Delta One, Boeing 777)
Master A330-300 (A333) Best Seats Thread

Will there be wifi on the international legs?

DL now touts International Wi-Fi is available on 100% of all wide body, long-haul aircraft providing near global coverage. Given "long-haul" this may not apply to NRT-SIN.

777s should all have wifi: thread #1, thread #2; although it is still subject to coverage/availability, seems to drop out in the far northern parts of the route, and coming down the Russian coast it seemed like http was slow but working and anything else like https took forever and/or was blocked

Delta doesn't seem to sell the Gogo global day pass on their web site but you can buy it directly from Gogo. You can use the same pass on both domestic and international flights in any order as long as it is within 24 hours.

FlexPerks VISA single-flight passes can NOT be used on international flights (they do not appear as a redemption choice when you sign in to Gogo in flight)

SIN airport facilities

If you are doing a quick turn, you can remain airside the whole time. There are a number of 24-hour food outlets in the transit mall areas (center of each terminal)

Each of the 3 terminals has their Transit Hotel on Level 3. Prices are similar for all:
-Terminal 1 - Plaza Premium Lounge recently opened Aerotel. Book at: Aerotel Terminal 1
-Terminal 2 and 3 - Harilela Hospitality runs an Ambassador Transit Hotel in each Terminal, above the Orchid Garden and Movie Theater, respectively. Book at: Ambassador Transit Hotels

Note that you can actually stay in either of the 3, regardless of which Terminal you arrive in. However, when leaving the airport, you need to exit through the same Terminal as that you arrived in.

FT thread on Singapore Airport Lounges

Airport website links:
NOTE: even though the DNATA Sky View lounge lists "Delta Airlines" on the airport web page and appears on a skyteam.com lounge search, it is considered by Delta to be third-party-operated, thus if you are STE+ in Y you will not have access. People have reported gaining access on an upgrade to J but YMMV.

There is free wifi either by receiving a text message code, or by scanning your passport. Previous posts mention just giving an email address, maybe try at the info desks. There are also free Internet stations.

NOTE for U.S. and other ~110V travelers: Singapore uses 230V/50Hz. There are plenty of USB charging ports in the seating areas, and most wall adapters for electronics these days are dual voltage (look for writing on the plug like "Input: 100V-240V") but if not or if you need to plug something else in, bring plug and voltage adapters to be safe.

Things to do in SIN

In descriptions of things to see/do airside, when you see "garden" read "smoking area" especially if you won't be there during daylight, the only other main reason people go there is to smoke.

SkyTrain between terminals runs from 5am-2:30am but you can always walk between any of the terminals as well.

Returning to the US

Even if you don't have Global Entry, CBP has a Mobile Passport Control app -- see program info and app website for d/l and list of participating airports which includes ATL (but not DTW)

You will have to pick up checked bags if any, and then everyone has to go through TSA security. International connections usually have their own checkpoint but it may not have PreCheck or CLEAR. If you want to take advantage of either of these, see airport-specific info below.

Through Delta's partnership CLEAR is free for DM, $79 for other Medallions, and $99 for General Members. Click here for more info on the partnership or to sign up.

Relevant FT threads:
Returning via ATL:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Atlanta (ATL): The Definitive Thread

CLEAR is now open in ATL but only at the domestic end.

For PreCheck, if you arrive in F, when you exit the hallway from customs there is a ticket desk in front of you. Normally the belt for re-checking bags on the left, and TSA screening beyond that. For PreCheck turn instead to the right (away from the drop-off luggage belt) and exit into the arrivals area, go up the escalators, and then you use the regular F terminal security checkpoint.

(It seems like NRT-ATL usually lands in E though... anyone have info to share?)

Returning via DTW:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Detroit (DTW): The Definitive Thread

When you exit customs normally you are directed to the right for rescreening. For PreCheck or CLEAR exit to the left as if you are an local Detroit arriving passenger and you will see some escalators in front of you. Go up 3 sets of escalators (there is a security checkpoint after the 2nd set but it does not have PreCheck). There is also an elevator.

The configuration as of Jan 2017 was, CLEAR without PreCheck was near the top of the escalators. If you have both CLEAR and PreCheck, there is a separate CLEAR lane on the right.

Duty Free Liquids

This post from 2014 says liquor etc must be checked as they cannot pass through screening in NRT/TSA. However this may have changed since then, and duty-free purchases in a Sealed Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) might be permitted:

http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/secu...ection_ss.html

I'm not shopping at the moment so I haven't tried to book this. But I thought others might be interested.

Delta – $511: Houston – Singapore. Roundtrip, including all Taxes

Edit: I was curious enough to do a quick search in the month of July. I saw a quick turn fare for 7/12 @ 21,629 miles for $505.

Wow!

Oops... sorry for the link!

20k miles for all the horror in Atlanta as an apology.
Claim for expenditures after missing baggage during 6 days is pending. It took approx 12 hrs of work to get the baggage located and 6 days to deliver to address at the time.
Had to work solely with wifi: Twitter (numerous times), Facebook, phone (numerous times), email (numerous times) etc.

Please give us a report of your trip. How many hours and MQM with that trip? Happy Travels to all and be glad you are flying Delta! Blessings to all!
All travel completed over the course of 10 days with a short stay in Amsterdam (birthplace) and Santiago.
Total time in the air: 69 hrs and 44 minutes.
Total layover time at airports: 47 hrs and 16 minutes.
Spend too many hours to count in various lounges during the trip - especially Atlanta was grueling with endless lines as far as the eye could see and no food or drinks left in the lounge we chose closest to our departure gate. Folks sleeping all-over and in lounges that stayed open all night to help and accommodate stranded passengers.
No one available to check bags after arrival in the middle of the night at ATL or even a single DL-person who could explain what was happening and what to do.
Had to push our baggage (mind you, checked baggage) through scanners at the only open TSA check-point to have it later gate-checked - no one cared.
(One can imagine what could have been brought on board without any check !)
Flight DL147 from ATL to SCL had two crew (luckily we had pilots ! ) who were completely worn out and had not slept for days.
So, all pax on board (nearly full flight) decided to give them some much needed rest.

All in all it was an adventure and actually fun !
Work can be easily done in the air and in lounges.
I never do a MR for the sole purpose of accruing (status) miles, flying to some random destination and do a quick turn around, but rather visit places that have my interest, a purpose to visit and make me want to stay a little while.

Have arrived in Jalandhar via DEL ATQ. Spotty internet here. Zorak has found some interesting prices so look at some of the other threads. When I get back to Us on 5/5 will be able to do my fall MR. Prices have come down sooner this year for the fall. Keep your comments and posts coming. Have a great weekend.

Just curious: ... do you know of anyone who was able to take advantage of a stopover (> than 24 hrs) in Tokio ?
The fare rules allow for one in each direction:

2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT - 1 IN EACH
DIRECTION AT THE GATEWAY IN AREA 3 AT USD 100.00 EACH.

I need to get to Saipan and NRT would be a perfect starting point for a side trip

However, reading through this an other threads, several folks mention HIP rules and DL seems quite restrictive with stopovers unfortunately.

I just book from IAH-SIN for $496.

IAH-ATL-ICN-SIN-NRT-ATL-IAH. (September).

I booked my sis and her boyfriend in November IAH-ATL-NRT-SIN-NRT-ATL-IAH at the same price.

I found on Delta.com using the flexible dates 5 week option.

Since I live in Los Angeles, used 20K Avios miles for a non-stop LAX-IAH-LAX flight on American.

The MQMs are over 21K

Smile Greetings from Jalandhar, Punjab, India

Greetings from India, anxious to get home. Trying to check prices from here doesn't work when I have access to Internet as all google flights prices are in rupees which is not what we need. MR from IAH looks great if it is still available when I return Fri. Have a great week. Hot here 100+ sometimes up to 110+. Thankful for AC when there is power which thankfully is most of the time. Last Nov was much cooler. Jul and Aug will be even hotter. Tomorrow on return to ATQ we will get to see the Golden Temple which we haven't seen yet even tho this is 3rd trip. Blessings to all!

Smile Waiting in DEL

Sure much better to be in lounge and not have to wait till 3.5 hrs before dep to check in. On way to ATQ finally got to see the Golden Temple, have to remove shoes to get on temple grounds but they will check them for you to be retrieved later. Parking is convenient and about a quarter mile from temple grounds. Very beautiful but didn't have time to go inside temple but did enter grounds which are very beautiful. Many people but lines not long. More concerned with making our flight ATQ DEL. Weather hot usually 100+ every day. Pollution bad and don't see a lot of blue sky. People very nice and gracious. One evening gave a presentation to the JOS Jalandhar Ophthalmologic Society on Lifestyle Management of Diabetes. During the days my son is busy doing corneal surgery mainly corneal transplants (some combined with cataract extraction) as there is only one corneal specialist in the city of about a million people. India has about 69 million people with Diabetes and in 36 million it hasn't been diagnosed. China has about 90 million with Diabetes and US is 3rd with 29.2 million. China currently most populous country with 1.3 billion but will be surpassed by India in 2022. That's enough geography for now. ATQ is less than 25 miles from border with Pakistan and unfortunately they are not the best of friends. DEL AMS leaves at 0330. Rest of trip AMS LAX SMF with last flight getting in about 4:38 pm if on time. Keep posting trip reports and low fares. Anxious to get back to US so I can do some checking on prices for another MR.

Just a word of caution on some of the better fares for the SIN runs.

Delta is now putting Basic Economy (E) Fares in so many routes...and we are seeing these in the cheapest of the SIN Mileage Runs. So, no GUC can be used; no Comfort+ Upgrades; in fact you get the seat Delta assigns you and that's it; wherever that seat may be in the main cabin!

So just be advised...

I will try to to do some fare searches this weekend and eliminate these 'E' fares from our results. Csfing1, enjoy hearing about the work you are doing and your helpful information! Safe travels back to the USA.

Aloha!

This goes back at least to December, if not earlier see this post:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/milea...l#post27448615

But it is definitely a worthwhile reminder to be careful.

Sadly Google Flights does not have a good way to filter out Basic Economy from the results. Not sure about the other OTAs.

If you are searching on Matrix you can specify "/f ~bc=e" in the advanced codes, as mentioned in the wiki.
