KWRI, I'm guessing.

Isn't Earle an NAS?

Winner winner. Four different types there, last I looked: AF Reserve has the KC-10, ANG has a combined fleet of old and new -135's, and the active contingent has C-17's.

Earle is about that far away, but they don't have anything air-based there. Earle is a Naval Weapons Station (NWS), and their land is mostly ammo storage for deploying ships. That's why they have the piers at Leonardo.

Don't they have an airstrip there? I thought they used to, at least, to get brass in and out. Maybe I'm confusing with Dix/McGuire.

They have a helipad. There's so many munitions igloos on Earle and so much 1.1 explosive that they probably don't have the space to build a landing strip...the separation distance (without anything being waivered, of course) from 1.1 is 4,000 feet, and when you add in taxiways and an apron, they probably couldn't even build one. Earle has three options for brass disposal.

1. Do what we did on the AF side and segregate it for recycling. The Air Force got a measurable amount of its annual budget from recycling...they are very adamant about it because systemwide it accounts for millions of non-taxpayer dollars.

2. We had locked dumpsters for chaff, flare, and 20mm waste. Those went to the recycler after being inventoried.

3. If they have such a quantity to be flown in or out, they can coordinate with Lakehurst and the relevant local police departments in order to convoy it on the grave shift.

FYI: Lakehurst and Dix/McGuire are being mini-BRACed next fiscal year. It's going to be rejiggered into one master facility and the Air Force is going to run it.

I forgot that you guys were talking about an air-based locale. I was familiar w/Earle from living in Rumson & aware of the close proximity of said ammo!

OMG! I had this same thing happen to me about a year ago when I used a voucher and CC to make up the difference. they ended up refunding to my CC and not to the voucher amount used from the original voucher. Very interesting.

The really cool thing about Lakehurst is/was the dirigible hanger/facilities. The history there used to give me shivers to see it. Is that big honker hanger still standing?

People freak out about explosives unnecessarily. I can tell you with complete confidence that the most dangerous stuff is the small stuff. It's easier to blow your hand off by mishandling a blasting cap than it is to set off anything big enough to do widespread damage. I could put an unfused 500-pound bomb on a dolly and give you a service rifle (M-16, etc.), and then tell you to stand 100 feet away...and then give you all the bullets you ask for. That bomb is never going to go off because there's no fusing system (explosive train...little boom in the fuse creates big boom) installed. The stuff encased in the steel of the bomb body is remarkably insensitive. In that scenario, the biggest danger that you are creating is ricocheting rifle bullets.

It is, and up until 2002 IIRC, they would open the hangar grounds for a Hindenburg memorial every year. If you take off on RWY6 from KMJX, as soon as you break the treeline, you get two blimp hangars dead ahead.

Ah....I guess that's where we differ....I'm a total TV junkie....my DVR is constantly in a state of being overfilled or emptied.

I guess that answers the question in the thread asking about refunds to a CC or certificate.

Not only is it still standing but I was in it semi-recently. They've converted a bunch of the space into walled off rooms including an area with a recording studio. I was in there acting as a session drummer for someone laying down some tracks for a demo. I got to see the inside of what's left of the actual hangar but it was through a small dirty window so I couldn't see much......just looked like a bunch of stacked up stuff being stored in there.

Still extremely cool to be there though.

The concern was more from a potential 'attack'/security perspective -- mind you this was pre-9/11.

Just boarded and the plane has Direct TV. We are very excited.

You are on the plane that was supposed to take me to SFO tonight.

If I get to EWR early enough I'll say "ahoy."

Anyone watching the Oudin - Petrova Open match? It's quite exciting! Hard to believe that Oudin is only 17!:-:

What worried the residents in that area? Was it that one day that property would just go boom, or was it more like theft and release?
