This is exactly what happened.
I guess UA will bump pax based on status and fare paid.
My friend bought a $2200 W ticket, and got bumped!
Another friend bought a $6600 B ticket, and his reservation seems still intact.
Both have no status. I guess UA will protect GS and 1K, regardless of fares.

So for those in China, serious question: how come you haven't gotten out?
Is it that you didnt' think it was so bad, that they wouldn't lockdown a big city like Shanghai (and then Shenzhen got locked down)?
Obviously you know the government cares naught for individual people by now, if you've been there for a while. This is nothing new, and in line with everything the Chinese government stands for.
I saw one poster who said wife stayed behind cause of work. Why? Why would you? So what about work?
Are the expats in Shanghai not financially well off that they were talking about saving some money on flights? If the situation is so bad why bother thinking about the upgrades to business?
I know when I was travelling when COVID broke March 2020 that I didn't care about flying in a premium class, and the amount of money required to get a ticket wasn't anywhere near the top of my mind.

I haven't gotten out but have returned to China just over 4 weeks ago, finished my quarrantine last Saturday...Why the hell would you do that you may ask, well I don't work over here but I'm married to a chinese lady who could not accompany me on my trip back to the UK due to the policy of not renewing her passport....For me, not returning was never an option, pointless being married if your not living together and whether it's good or bad times to come I will stay here till she can leave......
How was the quarantine experience?

I guess its the same reason why I wont sell my Tencent or BABA stock when it seems they keep trying to kill these companies. I always thought, the people in charge are smart and care about the economy, they wouldnt damage it by doing something completely stupid like locking down their showcase city.
I was wrong and I should have left.

But yes, I guess that is the definition of "for better or for worse"

Just chatted with my expat friends who live in the Shanghai Racquet & Tennis Club. They’re on Day 26 of lockdown. Family (husband, wife, and two kids) seem to be doing well. Husband is working remotely. Kids go to SAS Puxi and they start online classes tomorrow. They haven’t had too many issues with food availability. They’ve purchased government food and gone in on group purchases. I’m sure they were well stocked before lockdown. Unfortunately, their driver doesn’t seem to be doing as well. Sounds like he’s short on food. Mentally they’re doing okay as well.

....and made it to LAX.
So, it ends up being PKX-CAN-AKL-LAX-EWR for me.
Apparently the Guangzhou route is now also questionable though, as they also have cases now.

I have found a pretty good multi-city DUD(via PVG)-LHR-DUD fare in July that allows me a multiday stopover via NRT on return. The only place i've found it bookable is via Expedia. The transit is ~15h in PVG and given the situation there at the moment, visiting downtown will likely be out of the question; I'm prepared to wait it out in a lounge however. If I book with Expedia, will they re-route me (free of charge?) if airlines cancel the PVG flights? Thanks!

Why haven't people 'gotten out' back to the US where the gubbermemt who cArEs DeEpLy about their people has allowed a million people to die? It is a mystery, can't put my finger on it 🤔
Even though it's obvious you're not asking this in good faith I'll answer anyway. I've been here 12 years, my life is here and that's about it really. Although they fcked up in Shanghai I'd honestly rather stay here and risk going a bit hungry for a few days than going to the UK or the US and dying 🤷♂️

Transit through PVG or any mainland cities are not possible. It is likely an agent's error but I doubt they will rearrange you on other routes. To save some time just skip this route.

I have seen unrealitic routings using China as transit point on Kayak, Expedia and other online websites.
Proceed with caution and do your homework.
Excellent advice!
