If you are a Costco member, there's a decent promo right now for Lyft - Costco has Lyft Gift electronic Gift Cards - 4 - 50$ cards for 169.99

Basically, a 15% discount. $50 is pretty much the base rate for Lyft from JFK to Manhattan, plus toll and tip. The gift card is also good for Lyft XL, which seats up to six passengers.

The PANYNJ has partnered with the VIA app to offer "LGA Connect" airport rideshare service. The service will provide $15 shared rides to most NYC boroughs ($20 to certain areas of the Bronx and Staten Island).

How it Works:
LGA Connect rides can be booked 7 days a week between 8 am and 1 am with a credit card through the Via app, or with the help of a dispatcher at a designated “LGA Connect” pickup point outside of Terminal C/D. In the Via app, passengers select “LGA Connect” from the menu, and enter their desired destination. Via’s algorithm matches multiple passengers headed in the same direction into a single vehicle and provides passengers with vehicle identification information and an ETA. Rides depart within 10 minutes, and passengers will be dropped off at a nearby corner within walking distance of their destination.

For arrivals at JFK, our family of five usually uses UberXL, LyftXL, or Via Private Ride, whichever is cheapest at the time. Via usually ends up being cheapest because they don't charge as big a premium for more than 4 passengers as Uber and Lyft, but they all have dynamic pricing that changes depending on traffic and demand, so YMMV. PM if you need a Via referral code.

When comparing, note that Uber and Lyft will quote all-inclusive fares that include all taxes and tolls (but not tip), while Via will quote you a base fare "+ max $___ fees" (which are the taxes and tolls). Via's programming sucks and the last page when you order a car will usually leave out all the taxes, only mentioning the possibility of a toll, so make sure to make a mental note of the "max fees" from the first page when you select Private Ride so you aren't surprised by the taxes on the final bill.

Prices should be a little cheaper at 10pm, but right now (2:45pm on a weekday) JFK T5 to 42nd and 6th Ave in the middle of Midtown:
UberXL = $95.27
LyftXL = $92.40
Via Private Ride for 5 pax = $86.71 (quoted as "$71 + max $15.71 in fees")

Much appreciation for the response. I think we're going with Lyft XL due to the Costco deal and Hilton points.

Right now (10:50pm on a weeknight) fares from JFK T5 to 42nd/6th are:

UberXL: $81.15
LyftXL: $77.96
Via Private Ride: won't give me a quote (must not be many drivers at JFK right now)

Anyone had any experience with a good service for providing car seats for toddlers and plenty of luggage room?

It's been a few years since I've used them, but Eastern Car Service was good the handful of times I used them. Reasonably priced, reliable, good communication, and car seats for $5 above the regular price. I forget whether we specifically ordered a large vehicle or not, but I'm pretty sure we had Tahoes or Suburbans almost every time we used them, with plenty of luggage room.

A little higher end is Legends. No major difference in service, but everything is a bit more polished (nicer cars, better dressed drivers, a more sophisticated website, etc.) for a slightly higher price.

Uber and Lyft also have Car Seat options for about $10 (maybe a little more) over the basic UberX/Lyft fare. I think most of their vehicles with car seat are on the larger side so they have space to store the car seat when they aren't using it, but there's no way to assure that you'll get a big vehicle, whereas the other services will let you specifically request a larger vehicle for an extra charge.

Carmel advertising NYC-WAS and NYC-BOS service for $440

Received this email today. Promoted as a way to avoid COVID-19 for same amount of time as flying. Ironically, they are still offering a Pool option. :smh:

Dear Carmel customer,

As the Coronavirus epidemic continues to grow, we've noticed a very interesting phenomenon. Many of our customers who have booked a ride to the airports with the intention of flying to Washington D.C or Boston have cancelled their trips to the airport. But they will still be traveling to their destinations! What are they doing instead? They have booked a Carmel car to drive them directly to either Washington D.C. or Boston, as the case may be.

After all, it makes perfect sense. So, in order to support such wise decision we have decided to offer special lines at unbeatable prices.

Riding Carmel to Washington/Boston instead of flying is the smart thing to do for three main reasons:
99% less chance of exposure
It's simply common sense. Between the slow, overcrowded lines at airport security, the backed-up boarding corridors and, of course, an enclosed aircraft with constantly re-circulating air, we believe that eliminating all of this exposure with a quiet, private ride in a spotless Carmel car reduces chances of exposure by at least 99%, if not more.

Same time as flying
Let's do the math together. The average time spent getting to the airport is about 40 minutes. The average time you must allow for check-in and security is about 80 minutes. The average flight time to Washington DC or Boston is 80 minutes. And the average travel time from the airport to your destination is another 40 minutes. So when you put it all together the total door-to-door travel time when flying between NYC and Washington or Boston is 240 minutes, or 4 hours.

Guess what? The average door-to-door travel time with Carmel between NYC and Washington or Boston is 4 hours. We rest our case!

Live your life, uninterrupted
Let's be honest: regardless of how diligently you attempt to protect yourself against the Coronavirus, it has become increasingly possible that everyone on your flight -- or even the entire airport - may be quarantined for reasons that have nothing to do with your own careful behavior.

Now, thanks to the Carmel NYC-Washington-Boston special line, you have no reason to cancel either your vacation or your working trip to Washington or Boston.

Also important*
We also offer a Pool option for the special line. Please make sure you select it online (or mention it to the operator) when you make the reservation. If pooled, you will enjoy a 25% reduction on the fare.

And most important**
We know you will be delighted with the Carmel New York - Washington - Boston Special line; and while we would encourage you to tip the driver for his or her excellent service, we politely remind you there is no need to shake the driver's hand!

A simple " Namaste " will do.

* Price is for a sedan with up to 3 passengers. Minivans and SUVs are also available, but at higher rate. Tolls (if taken, round trip) and gratuities (always up to the customer's discretion) are not included.

That actually had me thinking since I really must be at the job in Northern Virginia near DC on Wednesday and have scheduled a flight on DL. Their price is actually half of a same-day first class round trip on the Shuttle. However, the flight up from FLL the other day on a newish 321 was one of the best that I could remember. The airplane had really been cleaned and looked spotless, the crew was chop-chop, and there was no unnecessary handling of anything. The rest room also looked immaculate. So, since I need to go on to Florida after DC, I will do the airline thing for the last time until this thing blows over (or unless I unfortunately again am needed in DC earlier).

Does anyone have recent info on getting a car from NJ to JFK? IME Uber and Lyft drivers in NJ don’t want to take JFK rides because they can’t pick up at JFK, but that was pre-pandemic. Given driver shortages I think an actual car service might be the way to go, but looking for recent experiences. Carmel? Dial7? Blacklane? Our priority is having a reservation honored, on time.

Not NJ-JFK specifically, but I recently used https://mydestinylimo.com/ and had a good experience. Booked EWR to a residential location in upstate NY over an hour away (so, not convenient and they almost certainly weren't getting a return trip) on a Sunday night with less than 2 hours notice. The car showed up on time, driver was professional, and the rate was *very* reasonable ... less than Uber/Lyft given the surge pricing at the time. Just one data point, but I'd recommend them.

I would not rely on Uber/Lyft, even scheduled. Surge pricing has been insane lately, and I've had multiple scheduled rides cancelled. Blacklane is much more reliable, but IME overpriced.

Well, most companies charge you even if you didn't use their services. The driver still had to drive to your location.
