Wiki/How-To/FAQ: Start here if this is your first time visiting this thread
If you have done this trip please help improve the wiki!

Why would a DL SkyPesos member do this now that RDMs are earned on ticket cost?

Either for the MQMs, or to actually visit SIN FWIW there are posts in the thread about similar itineraries on AA.

How do I search for dates/prices?

One way is to use ITA Matrix. Click on "Advanced routing codes" and enter something along the lines of:
  • outbound: dl+ dtw nrt
  • inbound: dl+ nrt dtw

NOTE: Basic Economy (E) fares have been spotted on this route and come with heavy restrictions. If you want to exclude E fares from your search you can add f ~bc=e in the separate "extension codes" box

See post 1329 for some screenshots (which are now out of date, the routing codes and extension code have been split into two separate input boxes)

You may wish to experiment with things like dtw,atl or x or even x+. Read the advanced routing codes help for more ideas. (DL no longer flies JFK-NRT nonstop)

I found an itinerary that works for me, how do I book it?
  • you can try a multi-city booking on Kayak or Google Flights and click through to Delta (you can save some effort by omitting the implicit/forced connection through NRT for example)
  • if you are comfortable installing add-ons etc. you can use the ITA userscript (see the wiki at the top of that thread)
  • for the less technically-inclined there is also the Book with Matrix helper site (and its related FT thread)
  • call in if none of the above methods work or e.g. you want to add a stopover

Do I need a visa?

No visa is needed for transits (or in fact for visiting up to 90 days, subject to qualifications)
You can get your boarding passes for your Delta return flight at Transit Lounge D, which opens 3 hours before departure.

What are the best seats?

Assuming you're stuck in Y (no GUCs etc.)

Master A330-300 (A333) Best Seats Thread

Will there be wifi on the international legs?

DL now touts International Wi-Fi is available on 100% of all wide body, long-haul aircraft providing near global coverage. Given "long-haul" this may not apply to NRT-SIN.

777s should all have wifi: thread #1, thread #2; although it is still subject to coverage/availability, seems to drop out in the far northern parts of the route, and coming down the Russian coast it seemed like http was slow but working and anything else like https took forever and/or was blocked

Delta doesn't seem to sell the Gogo global day pass on their web site but you can buy it directly from Gogo. You can use the same pass on both domestic and international flights in any order as long as it is within 24 hours.

FlexPerks VISA single-flight passes can NOT be used on international flights (they do not appear as a redemption choice when you sign in to Gogo in flight)

SIN airport facilities

If you are doing a quick turn, you can remain airside the whole time. There are a number of 24-hour food outlets in the transit mall areas (center of each terminal)

Each of the 3 terminals has their Transit Hotel on Level 3. Prices are similar for all:
-Terminal 1 - Plaza Premium Lounge recently opened Aerotel. Book at: Aerotel Terminal 1
-Terminal 2 and 3 - Harilela Hospitality runs an Ambassador Transit Hotel in each Terminal, above the Orchid Garden and Movie Theater, respectively. Book at: Ambassador Transit Hotels

Note that you can actually stay in either of the 3, regardless of which Terminal you arrive in. However, when leaving the airport, you need to exit through the same Terminal as that you arrived in.

FT thread on Singapore Airport Lounges

Airport website links:
NOTE: even though the DNATA Sky View lounge lists "Delta Airlines" on the airport web page and appears on a skyteam.com lounge search, it is considered by Delta to be third-party-operated, thus if you are STE+ in Y you will not have access. People have reported gaining access on an upgrade to J but YMMV.

There is free wifi either by receiving a text message code, or by scanning your passport. Previous posts mention just giving an email address, maybe try at the info desks. There are also free Internet stations.

NOTE for U.S. and other ~110V travelers: Singapore uses 230V/50Hz. There are plenty of USB charging ports in the seating areas, and most wall adapters for electronics these days are dual voltage (look for writing on the plug like "Input: 100V-240V") but if not or if you need to plug something else in, bring plug and voltage adapters to be safe.

Things to do in SIN

In descriptions of things to see/do airside, when you see "garden" read "smoking area" especially if you won't be there during daylight, the only other main reason people go there is to smoke.

SkyTrain between terminals runs from 5am-2:30am but you can always walk between any of the terminals as well.

Returning to the US

Even if you don't have Global Entry, CBP has a Mobile Passport Control app -- see program info and app website for d/l and list of participating airports which includes ATL (but not DTW)

You will have to pick up checked bags if any, and then everyone has to go through TSA security. International connections usually have their own checkpoint but it may not have PreCheck or CLEAR. If you want to take advantage of either of these, see airport-specific info below.

Through Delta's partnership CLEAR is free for DM, $79 for other Medallions, and $99 for General Members. Click here for more info on the partnership or to sign up.

Relevant FT threads:
Returning via ATL:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Atlanta (ATL): The Definitive Thread

CLEAR is now open in ATL but only at the domestic end.

For PreCheck, if you arrive in F, when you exit the hallway from customs there is a ticket desk in front of you. Normally the belt for re-checking bags on the left, and TSA screening beyond that. For PreCheck turn instead to the right (away from the drop-off luggage belt) and exit into the arrivals area, go up the escalators, and then you use the regular F terminal security checkpoint.

(It seems like NRT-ATL usually lands in E though... anyone have info to share?)

Returning via DTW:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Detroit (DTW): The Definitive Thread

When you exit customs normally you are directed to the right for rescreening. For PreCheck or CLEAR exit to the left as if you are an local Detroit arriving passenger and you will see some escalators in front of you. Go up 3 sets of escalators (there is a security checkpoint after the 2nd set but it does not have PreCheck). There is also an elevator.

The configuration as of Jan 2017 was, CLEAR without PreCheck was near the top of the escalators. If you have both CLEAR and PreCheck, there is a separate CLEAR lane on the right.

Duty Free Liquids

This post from 2014 says liquor etc must be checked as they cannot pass through screening in NRT/TSA. However this may have changed since then, and duty-free purchases in a Sealed Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) might be permitted:

http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/secu...ection_ss.html

Go to information desk, there is one in T1 just across from where you will go down to go thru immigration, which is open 24 hrs and they will give you password as I didn't want to use my phone, they will send a text message with password if you want to use your phone. Put in password and you have free wifi while you are there. They also have computers to use for Internet for those who don't have one or wifi.

Home safely

Arrived in SFO a few minutes early and left parking lot before 2130 so only had to pay for 3 days of parking.

Would have never made connection at JFK without Global Entryand PreChek. Had to run as it is. We were last ones on the plane, gate B 38, had to run part of the way to make the plane, they said they were waiting for us. Got UG for JFK SFO so made it for 5/6 legs which is very good.

Get your flu shot! Happy Travels!

Smile Great to meet a FT MRer

I've just gotten home. A few remarks:
-SIN is a great airport to spend time. I took a shower and spent some time at a spa (Priority Pass got me in), but Csfing1 mentioned to me that you can wander around and look at orchids, etc.

-If, like me, you can't get upgraded on DL then you might consider an exit row aisle seat (Row 44) on the 777s on the LAX-NRT and NRT-SIN legs. It worked out well for me. Legroom, etc.

-If, like me, you are an AS Mileage Plan member, be sure to get printed boarding passes so you have physical proof you logged the miles. If they don't show on your AS MVP account, Alaska may ask you to send them photocopies of printed boarding passes.
Really enjoyed meeting FM in SIN and visiting with a FT MRer. Hope to meet anyone else on future MR, next one and last for this year is Thanksgiving week Nov 24-28 PDX LAX JFK NRT SIN NRT JFK LAX SMF. PDX LAX and LAX SMF are positioning flights and will give more than 26,000 MQM.

Happy Travels! Have a great weekend! Cheers! ^

In retrospect, I would have been better off with an extra leg PVG to NRT and NRT to SEA or SFO because the long overseas leg would have been on DL metal.

I'm off to HKG on friday, SFO-SEA-HKG. I got upgraded to 1st from SFO-SEA, which is no big deal, will see about the open 1st class situation for SEA-HKG.
We're you able get DL credit for the miles you flew on China Eastern? Did they give you full credit or less? Hope your trip to HKG goes well!

Happy Travels! Cheers!

The price you have is good, am doing the same run but my flight LAX JFK is a red eye, the other flights are the same so will look for you if you have the itinerary you posted. Have you been to SIN before or is this your first trip. If you have the time to spend a few days it is well worth a visit but it is also a great MR. If you have any questions please let me know?

Happy Travels! Get your quadrivalent Flu shot! Thanks for your post, couldn't get as good a price tonight as you did! Cheers! Checked prices tonight for various dates in Nov and Dec and they are higher, can get some good prices bit they are for a much longer stay as I have from Dec 3-24!

Thanks for the reply, did you book thru DL.com or some other site. Got prices for Dec 18-23 for $432.50 SIN PVG SIN in coach on Orbitz.

That price seems pretty solid. They are a skymiles partner so there is no reason why you shouldn't get miles, the multipliers may be different, but I think it is spelled out on delta's site.

It was through my work's travel agency, although it's just that I book it through their online tool that is like orbitz or any other OTA. I chose all Delta flights, that segment has a Delta codeshare flight number. I do remember that when you check in at China Eastern, that did not automatically have my Skymiles number, and just giving your number and having them look it up doesn't work well over there. I recommend having your Medallion physical card or bag tag. Also get a printed boarding ticket and save it in the event you have to file for a missing mileage credit.

I wasn't sure in reading your posts about upgrades and the abbreviations. did you got your UG based on the GUC right, not based on the fact that you were "merely" Diamond? Did they fly with any open seats in first?

Had to use GU (Global Upgrade cert) and we were waitlisted for all legs, didn't request LAX JFK leg until we got UG om intl seg and that was why it was important to talk to DM desk from NRT to request UG on JFK SFO leg and the lady in SC in NRT did that for me. We were either 1&2 or 2&3 on all UG lists. Probably much safer to book later dep JFK SFO than the earlier one unless you have GE and PreChk Or they meet you as soon as you get thru TSA with a cart and drive you to the gate, it is a good jog. Once several years ago on NW on same flight NRT JFK SFO there was a rep who met me and escorted me thru terminal to SC near gate. In LAX on another tight connection to another terminal we were met by rep as we exited plane and taken down ramp to Porsche SUV and driven to other terminal, that was nice and we didn't have to rush. All my dealings have been positive with DL but I usually got more international UG with NW than DL, if Y is sold out they will give UG. Didn't see any empty seats in J, all were filled! Wish I knew how to access them without GU.

Thanks for your answers to my questions. Have a great flight and safe travels!

Thanks csfing1! I PM'ed you but I'll post here for all the other people as well. I ended up calling the Delta line and was able to snatch that exact itinerary for 1058.50 ai!! The rep was amazingly helpful and was confused why I was doing weird routing at first and then realized a few minutes into the conversation. I was also able to apply a $400 voucher I had from a past bump so that definitely made this a very good deal for me! It's going to be my very first MR ever so am really excited! I have been to SIN before but didn't get to explore the airport very much. I stayed in the city for a day and checked out Resorts World, took a tour of the city, and visited Universal Studios Singapore. Am really looking forward to meeting the fellow MRer's but I probably won't be UG. I am currently Gold but will hit PM by this trip. Any tips on UG?

EDIT:

I saw that csfing1 was taking a redeye for the LAX > JFK. I just called back and switched to the 10:55 red eye. I like JFK but I don't want to spend an entire 11 hours on a layover there so that worked out perfectly. I also got a refund which knocked the price back down to the 1052.90 ITA quoted. Thanks again csfing1 for all his help. Looking forward to meeting you on this entire trip!
