Can you explain this one a little more? I don't understand how it works.

You and your companion are on the EUA list. You get upgraded, your companion doesn't. Now you are faced with not sitting together.

I have seen, on a couple of occasions, the upgraded elite walking back to coach and asking the person who is sitting next to their companion if they would like to swap seats. Essentially, the elite takes it upon themselves to op-up a random pax instead of the next elite.

Due to the volatility of the EUA list (we've all seen it) most elite are savvy enough to know their companion has a fighting chance until just before the front door closes. So, they won't volunteer their seat back (which has now been reassigned anyway) to the GA prior to boarding.

If CO implemented an "all or nothing" system where, if both parties did not receive an upgrade, it wouldn't be offered to just one (if that's what the user wanted).

The fact that random pax get the opportunity to occupy F before elite companions pretty much kills the program in my opinion. Why even bother offering it?

Another reason not to split, and just book separately from the start.

But then you need to deal with the hassle of calling to get emergency row seat assignments for your non-elite companion. Personally, I'd rather just pass on the extra travel credit.

I know.

Yet another reason for CO to allow a method for entering the PNR for a companion at any time, and then linking that PNR to your own.

I sent a PM with the various email addresses, too.

The "problem" with the companion upgrade program is only really a problem if you insist on an all or nothing approach. We don't so it isn't as troublesome for us.

Yes, it would be nice to be able to keep the single PNR and have the EUA upgrade process and not split things apart, but I do not see CO making that change in their systems anytime soon.

+1000!

Based on a recent COInsider post, it sounds like this is possible. If both people (the elite and the non-elite) are kept on the same PNR and you use OLCI at T-2, the upgrade options appears adding both people to the list. This sounds like an all-or-nothing to me but I've never tried it.

I'm wondering if it works from the PDA site since at T-2, I'm usually on my way to the airport already (especially if Ms. GadFly is coming along with her giant friggin' suitcase )

See, I had no idea this was even possible, and I consider myself reasonably informed.

And that, my friends, is the root problem with OnePass. It's needlessly confusing. Portions of the tax code are easier to understand than this nonsense.

My Great Lakes flight was cancelled to DEN. I'm now hoping my flight DEN-IAH is cancelled so that CO will take mercy on me and I can book OMA-IAH without shelling out over $400

With all this companion upgrade talk, I am traveling with a friend EWR-LAS tonight. There is 1 F seat left and I have already been upgraded. My goal is to get to the airport 3+ hours in advance to get him on the list but is there anything else I could do?

Tres lame - does WN or anyone else fly OMA-DEN (or whatever the routing of your original segment was)?

I wouldn't make it. It's a three hour drive to OMA

With respect to Gol, you just have to book far enough in advance before the lower fare buckets sell out. It used to be that you could only book with a South American-based credit card or via a travel agency; not sure whether that is still the case. I booked my Gol tickets through Amex. TAM is bookable through Expedia. I would look at TAM too because the fares often are the same.

Thanks for the info. I looked at TAM & they were more expensive. I hadn't thought of booking through AMEX -- I hadn't yet looked at whether the GOL (english) site accepts US cc or not. I'll have to research it more.
