If your flight have been cancelled*** (you should also be able to refund on schedule changes of >120* minutes (241 minutes for tickets purchased on or after 8 Apr 2020), nonstop to connection or connection reduced to less than minimum connection time) and you want to refund, no need to call AA, just do the following:
1. Take screenshot/email of new rebooked flights/or no rebooked flights as evidence of change.
2. Note down ticket number in original email if print receipt option is not available.
3. Cancel reservation
4. Submit refund request online.
5. Go back to page after a 3-4 days to check refund status.
*NOTE: site for refunds is https://prefunds.aa.com/refunds/
*NOTE AA has changed the change time from 121 to 241 minutes for tickets purchased on or after April 8, 2020.
***Airline defines cancelled as IRROPS that occur day or a couple of days prior to departure.
Another way is to reach out to the Twitter team at @AmericanAir.

Enforcement Notice Regarding Refunds by Carriers Given the Unprecedented Impact of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency on Air Travel - The U.S. Department of Transportations Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings, a unit within the Office of the General Counsel, is issuing this notice to remind the traveling public and U.S. and foreign carriers that passengers should be refunded promptly when their scheduled flights are cancelled or significantly delayed. Although the COVID-19 public health emergency has had an unprecedented impact on air travel, the airlines obligation to refund passengers for cancelled or significantly delayed flights remains unchanged.

Using ticket credit for flight that is later cancelled
Hi,
I voluntarily cancelled my flights. If I use the credit from that ticket to purchase a new flight, what he opens if the new flight is cancelled? Would I be able to get a refund back to my credit card or just another credit to use toward another flight?
thanks!!

Our "orphaned" in-country flight advice from rep was wait up until the day prior as it may be cancelled, looking at it, it has been cancelled every other day almost like clockwork, so maybe we get lucky, otherwise will be credit or using our travel insurance.
Our full situation is post #75
On prefunds.aa.com the status states "We couldn't find your request..." just like another reported here. When I put the ticket number into submit a refund request each of our 3 tickets shows as "eligible for review"
So now I guess it's a waiting game, any other similar experiences that have successfully completed and if so how long?

Thanks, so further to my posts, I called AA, got straight through no wait at all and the rep said he was an EXP Supervisor, super nice. He cancelled down the flights since we were INVOL re-routed and clearly LHR-PHX is cancelled for 4/4. He couldn't explain why we were not notified and nothing giving an indication of the changes. He's submitted the PNR for refund, he said it has to be manually processed because our ticket was paid in sterling. The timing he gave was 12-15 business days.

Here's a strange twist. I had canceled a RT flight going out 3/8 and back on 3/12. After I initially booked it, I accepted a $71 upgrade offer. The email confirmation showed the original ticket number with the new total fare including the $71 upgrade.
After AA announced they were giving full ticket value credits with no change fees, and my client restricted travel in March, I canceled the ticket and AA gave me full value credit - including the $71 upgrade.
Today I got an AMEX credit for $71 that AA refunded me because that upgraded flight I originally booked ended up being canceled. So I effectively have made $71 in this transaction. Add this to the list of 249,257 IT glitches.

Same thing happened to my refund. It took about 12 days and went from 'Pending Review' to refunded in 1 day and then showed up on my AMEX card immediately.

Refund or Voucher with 20% bonus?
My AA flights were cancelled, and I'm trying to decide whether to get a refund, or go for the voucher with a 20% bonus. My cancelled flights were for four people to Europe, so the 20% is a decent amount (otherwise I'd take the cash in a heartbeat) . I've not done vouchers before-- I know that I'll have to use them within a year, and that presumably if I purchase tickets for less than the voucher amount I'll get a new voucher for the residual. In the pre-coronavirus past, I flew AA for personal travel ~4 times/year and always stuck with AA since my wife and I both have had status. Going forward, I assume I'll do the same thing, though clearly there is a lot of uncertainty around how status will work this year (my work travel has been zeroed out since january) and when travel will resume in earnest such that I can try to use my vouchers. Is there any prevailing opinion on whether to go with refund or increased voucher amount? Are there any downsides to the vouchers (other than the time limit and being forced to choose AA) that I'm missing? Thanks!

I am meant to fly on April 18 - at the moment none of my flights are showing as cancelled or changed. In the experience of others posting here, how soon ahead of time has AA been cancelling flights? - would like a refund rather than a credit as I am unlikely to use it within the time required so have been holding off cancelling my ticket

I had booked few months ago on AA.com an AA codeshare on RJ that was to depart next week. RJ is no longer operating flights until April 13. When I log on to my AA account the flight no longer displays. If we enter our AA confirmation while being logged off it displays as "ticketed" but there is no longer any flight information attached. I tried to go to the refunds website to see if I can get one and it says I have to call in. I can cancel the flight from the confirmation page but it gives me a voucher which does not work for me. My plan is to call AA some time this week to ask for a refund.
My other issue is that I have a three leg award booking on RJ/EY for later this month. One of the legs that is operated by EY was cancelled and no longer on the itinerary. The ticket otherwise is still intact. I'm assuming I should be able to get a refund of miles + taxes and fees without incurring a cancellation fee.

My QR flight was cancelled end May. Surprised they cancelled so far out. Still waiting for points refund.
Any view as to why? Do you think the flight was genuinely cancelled - or they just dont want to fly award tickets?
Booked using AA points.

I've also been offered a 20% travel voucher for a cancelled first class flight. Can this voucher be used for multiple trips? In other words, if the original value of the voucher was $900, can I use it for a $400 flight and have $500 left for another trip?

Trip is booked for April 10th. Viewing it on "My Trips" says
"Your flight changed.
Please check back soon to see what changed."
But, as shown, all flight legs and times are unchanged from the original booking. Presumably AA will provide information about the changes as the departure date draws near?
The cynic in me says this is AA trying to prod me now into canceling for a voucher, instead of waiting for a full refund.

So for anyone wondering with a manual review where you called in, our's has flipped this evening to "Pending Review" in red when using the "Request a Refund" tab. The Status tab still says "we couldn't find your request." It's clear it's moving through now, the time elapsed to flip to this state is roughly 48hrs in our case (Sat-Mon). Now let's see how long the review takes...

So keep checking and have a look through the thread, some good tips and reminders of your passenger rights for refund situations. Good luck...
