If your flight have been cancelled*** (you should also be able to refund on schedule changes of >120* minutes (241 minutes for tickets purchased on or after 8 Apr 2020), nonstop to connection or connection reduced to less than minimum connection time) and you want to refund, no need to call AA, just do the following:
1. Take screenshot/email of new rebooked flights/or no rebooked flights as evidence of change.
2. Note down ticket number in original email if print receipt option is not available.

3. Cancel reservation
4. Submit refund request online.
5. Go back to page after a 3-4 days to check refund status.

*NOTE: site for refunds is https://prefunds.aa.com/refunds/

*NOTE AA has changed the change time from 121 to 241 minutes for tickets purchased on or after April 8, 2020.

***Airline defines cancelled as IRROPS that occur day or a couple of days prior to departure.

Another way is to reach out to the Twitter team at @AmericanAir.

April 3, 2020: The US DOT posted today an enforcement notice regarding refunds by carriers:
https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/latest-news
Enforcement Notice Regarding Refunds by Carriers Given the Unprecedented Impact of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency on Air Travel - The U.S. Department of Transportations Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings, a unit within the Office of the General Counsel, is issuing this notice to remind the traveling public and U.S. and foreign carriers that passengers should be refunded promptly when their scheduled flights are cancelled or significantly delayed. Although the COVID-19 public health emergency has had an unprecedented impact on air travel, the airlines obligation to refund passengers for cancelled or significantly delayed flights remains unchanged.

As have I. Personally, I wouldn't invest the price of a ticket in AA right now, so I certainly don't wish to become an unsecured creditor.

Wow. I submitted the request last Tuesday morning and they still say "Pending Review". Not sure if mine is more complicated since I had miles + copay upgrades applied.

I was told by the phone AAgent that to be specific in the remarks section as to which flight was cancelled and that would speed up the process. I never logged back in to check the status so I dont know if mine were reviewed. They were all J and F fares on International Itineraries, all on AA metal and all paid for in cash (no miles, no upgrades).

Hope someone has the answer to this. The facts:
AA ticket and flight number booked.
Operated by BA.
Booked via online travel agent here in the UK.

Speaking with TA at the moment, however is there anyone who knows what happens if I ring up AA in the US and ask for a refund (after all, it is their ticket) or will they see that it is a TA booking and send me back?

They will almost certainly send you back to the TA, at which point I'm guessing you'll have to initiate a chargeback. Is the flight still operating or was it cancelled? Are you cancelling because of the travel ban?

Having a look on the AA site under MMB, the outward leg has disappeared - not even a red line thru it! So it comes up looking like a one way from EWR-LHR! I checked the BA bookings and flight does not come up as an option to book on that day so I guess it's been cancelled.

The booking was for my wife who I was going to join over there for a family memorial service which has now been postponed until next year some time - all due to Covid. So no need for the trip now as nobody can get there.

Sorry to hear that, but you will be sent to your travel agent. Keep screenshots of the MMB page.

Have 2 tickets - JFK-MXP canceled and refund requested Feb 29 still pending $3500. JFK- LHR cancelled and refund requested Mar 21 still pending $1200. Called EXP AA and told still in que for processing and need to call back during business hours. Sitting on another $3,000 of credits so don't need any more.

Presuming that these were one-way JFK-MXP tickets, simply initiate a chargeback of the full ticket amount with your card issuer (bank). Make certain that you note that AA cancelled, when you requested the refund , the fact that you were promised a refund and that none has arrived. Less is more.

OK, just as a data point here - had some success tonight. OTA received an email from AA. They were going to give me the refund, minus airline tax and Admin charge (90 total!!). I questioned first the tax - I'm not going anywhere so why the tax? He said he would ask the same. Then after a short discussion he agreed to refund the full amount we paid and sent me an email to confirm that straight away. So in fairness, well done to the OTA. Payment expected in 4-5 weekdays.

Question Requesting refund for a canceled flight

I've read this entire thread, and I don't see the details for my situation. Perhaps, someone could comment.

On March 6, 2020, I bought a simple one-way domestic ticket for $140 on aa.com, to fly this Friday, March 27.

About 10 ago, I realized I would not take this trip because my event was postponed, and also the Covid-19 restrictions to stay-at-home, and avoid non-essential travel.

Rather than cancelling the flight for e-credit, I chose to wait for AA to cancel the flight, and possibly apply for a refund.

Today, March 25, I received an E-Mail from AA, stating that my flight was cancelled, and giving me two choices: accept a rebooking to another specified flight, or select another flight from a list of 13 flights. There was no option to cancel, either for a refund or e-credit.

I tried to submit a refund request at the refund screen, using my ticket number, but was told to first cancel my trip.

When I visit "My Trips", the trip has no Cancel button. It simply says "Your flight was canceled. We saved you a seat on a new flight", followed by the selection options mentioned above.

So, now, I'm puzzled. These seem to be my options. Please comment.

1. Telephone AA, wait on hold, and hope to resolve the situation.
2. Tweet AA, explain my problem, and hope for a reply.
3. Do nothing, and expect to receive an e-credit.
4. Select one of the offered flights, and hope that a Cancel button appears for the new "My Trip". Then Cancel the trip, and apply for a refund.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Don't do # 4. I'd do # 1. You don't need to wait on hold. Just use the callback feature. It works well.

Hi,

I had an award booking on Qatar via AA. It has been called (logged in and the flight is no longer there, and cannot manage booking on Qatar). Flight was end May Tokyo to Vienna.

Those points haven't appeared back in my account. Should I call or wait. I didn't receive an email either.

Edit: Hmm, seems they say not to call as well :|
