If your flight have been cancelled*** (you should also be able to refund on schedule changes of >120* minutes (241 minutes for tickets purchased on or after 8 Apr 2020), nonstop to connection or connection reduced to less than minimum connection time) and you want to refund, no need to call AA, just do the following:
1. Take screenshot/email of new rebooked flights/or no rebooked flights as evidence of change.
2. Note down ticket number in original email if print receipt option is not available.

3. Cancel reservation
4. Submit refund request online.
5. Go back to page after a 3-4 days to check refund status.

*NOTE: site for refunds is https://prefunds.aa.com/refunds/

*NOTE AA has changed the change time from 121 to 241 minutes for tickets purchased on or after April 8, 2020.

***Airline defines cancelled as IRROPS that occur day or a couple of days prior to departure.

Another way is to reach out to the Twitter team at @AmericanAir.

April 3, 2020: The US DOT posted today an enforcement notice regarding refunds by carriers:
https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/latest-news
Enforcement Notice Regarding Refunds by Carriers Given the Unprecedented Impact of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency on Air Travel - The U.S. Department of Transportations Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings, a unit within the Office of the General Counsel, is issuing this notice to remind the traveling public and U.S. and foreign carriers that passengers should be refunded promptly when their scheduled flights are cancelled or significantly delayed. Although the COVID-19 public health emergency has had an unprecedented impact on air travel, the airlines obligation to refund passengers for cancelled or significantly delayed flights remains unchanged.

The cancellation of one part of a trip doesn't automatically cancel the entire trip, and if you are 36 hours away, I cannot imagine why you would be searching what the DOT says or what we say, before asking AA to resolve the issue first.
Call me naive but cancelling the main part of the trip (i.e the international portion) to me constitutes cancelling the ticket. Who wants to be left with some domestic portion that doesn't even make sense. AA should have cancelled the entire ticket and refunded the passenger their money. They did the same thing to me and for a $1238.24 ticket they gave me a $66.41voucher. That is why people contact the DOT.

The flight isn't until May 25 and I am now certain I won't be taking the trip but I am wondering - should I wait and see if there are further changes and/or cancellations or go ahead and cancel and try for a refund now? And will I need the new ticket number or will the old ticket number still work for a refund request?
Go to AA refund page and request a receipt with the old ticket number. It should show the current ticket number beginning with 001.

Non-stop to connecting is eligible for refund regardless of change in time.

I thought with the current policy if AA changes a reservation from nonstop to one with stops, the reservation IS eligible for a refund regardless of the times. Am I wrong or was the agent incorrect?
Same as above.

Just read this after getting off the phone with AA. I had to call back. After speaking with 3 agents, the reservation was finally cancelled and I was told the miles would be redeposited and fees refunded to the card I used to book. Although, there was no time frame given or cancellation email received. I did check the AA app and the reservation is definitely gone. Thank you for all the help!

Thank you for contacting FlyerTalk.
While we are ALL sympathetic with your situation, the best advice would be to contact Priceline, as they are your Travel Agent for this ticket.
If priceline is unhelpful, you might consider a chargeback via your credit card issuer.

Also, the use of periods (.), commas (,) and hitting return (or enter) once in a while would make your screed slightly more readable.

Have a pleasant evening.

Agreed! I find Twitter extremely helpful and quick with all questions and concerns. I checked in via Twitter in March for April travel and at that time I would have received a credit, Once my flights were totally changed I called AA to receive the instructions for a refund and Twitter DM helped me get my miles reinstated. I actually received my $150 credit for the miles upgrade before my ticket refund.

Thanks for data point. AA is definitely taking longer to process refunds. In late March, I had multiples AA tickets refunded within 5 days. My refund submitted 5 APR is still Pending Review. Hopefully will see progress this week based on your data point.

Thanks; posts like this help me know my request isn't an outlier. My refund submitted Apr 7, still Pending Review.

I submitted my refund request on 4/5 - still pending review. This was for 4 business class r/t JFK to BCN tickets so it's a rather hefty refund.

Same here for a 4/5 request. You're definitely not an outlier.

Very likely AA received a surge in refund request immediately on/after 5 APR as that is when the schedule change was loaded.

Update: Checked this morning and was refunded (per the site, it hasn't hit my card) overnight. So 7 business days for the review to happen for me.

I called to cancel a flight yesterday and to check on the refund status of previously canceled flights. The agent contacted the refunds department and was told that the current turnaround time for refunds in now 17 days.

I requested 3 cancelled flight refunds on 4/5. Two at noon for 1K+ tickets and one at 12:30 for $100. I just received word that the $100 ticket has been refunded but the two expensive tickets are still pending review even though they were submitted first...

As another data point I submitted a refund for a cancelled international flight on Sunday April 5th and just got the confirmation today. I have to say the process was surprisingly simple and I was very well treated.
