The cancellation of one part of a trip doesn't automatically cancel the entire trip, and if you are 36 hours away, I cannot imagine why you would be searching what the DOT says or what we say, before asking AA to resolve the issue first.
Call me naive but cancelling the main part of the trip (i.e the international portion) to me constitutes cancelling the ticket. Who wants to be left with some domestic portion that doesn't even make sense. AA should have cancelled the entire ticket and refunded the passenger their money. They did the same thing to me and for a $1238.24 ticket they gave me a $66.41voucher. That is why people contact the DOT.
