49- to my way of analyzing Quiz questions, the comment about total elapsed time for a two-stop itinerary taking about as long as a one-90-minute-ATL-connection itinerary pretty much knocks both Eastern and Delta off the table ... let’s try US Air via the Charlotte/CLT hub and someplace small like ... hmmmmm ... Charleston WV (CRW); speaking of small, how about an ex-Empire Fokker F.28 (that came over in the Piedmont merger that summer) for the jet

I like your thinking here. These are great options. Then again, perhaps it's testament to my question researching prowess (on this one at least...) that unfortunately, US Air is not the airline we're looking for here. Neither are Eastern or Delta via ATL. Nope - we're looking for a different airline operating an as yet unidentified aircraft along a completely different routing. So - as we love to say here at the OTAQ&D:

Please - guess again!

60. (1979) Cleveland can be particularly dreary in the winter, so one can only imagine your excitement to be headed down to sunny Acapulco this weekend. Thankfully, you won’t have to make any connections either because there’s a single direct flight between Cleveland and Acapulco that makes two enroute stops. Name the airline, the two enroute stops and the aircraft type.
Braniff 72S routing CLE - ____ - IAH - ACA has been identified. Need missing stop
49. Well, let's see here....I believe American was operating a hub in 1989 at Raleigh/Durham. Thus, a wild guess....

AA operating an MD-80 with a routing of MLB - RDU - ORD - PIT. And I'll be surprised if this is correct....

60. Time to plug in the missing stop. Let's go with Chicago O'Hare (ORD).

And speaking of multi-stop routes.....

The current effect of the pandemic on U.S. air carriers has resulted in the reintroduction of multi-stop services by some airlines. An example is a route presently being flown by American Eagle serving small communities in Colorado. The service operates Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) - Vail Eagle County (EGE) - Aspen (ASE) - Montrose (MTJ) - Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on Thursdays through Mondays with a CRJ700. I believe the leg between EGE and ASE is around 29 miles.....which just might make it the shortest scheduled regional jet flight in the U.S. at the present time.

Well you're mostly correct. It was indeed American operating an MD-80. Now we just need to clean up the routing a bit. Raleigh/Durham was indeed a stop, however Chicago was not. Now the question is was RDU the first stop or the second stop? And what was the other stop? One of the flights was just 37 minutes - block to block. Hmm....

Time to plug in the missing stop. Let's go with Chicago O'Hare (ORD).

That's the ticket, JL The CLE-ORD tag-on is an odd route for Braniff, but then post deregulation BN branched out into all manner of crazy routes, many of which were not moneymakers for the airline. Here's the schedule:

Braniff BN 83 Cleveland (CLE) 715a-725a B Chicago (ORD) 805a-1030a B Houston (IAH) 1100a-110p L Acapulco (ACA) 727-200 X7

Wow! That is one routing I would love to fly! DFW-MTJ. If AA's still flying it after the virus is vanquished, I'll be booking a flight!

We're making good progress here. For any of you new to the festivities, please limit your response to no more than two questions per day so that all may participate. And as always, we are looking for complete answers here. Ready? Set? Go!

38. (1998) You’re seated aboard the only flight between New York and Las Vegas that markets a Business Class or “C” class seat. Well what the heck – it’s cheaper than everyone else’s First Class so you’ve decided to splurge! Identify the airline and aircraft you’re flying aboard.
It's not TWA

40. (1988) From your home outside St. Louis, MO you need to fly back to Long Island for your 10th high school reunion at Connetquot High School. These days there’s a lot more service into nearby Long Island MacArthur Airport than there used to be, though you’re disappointed to find none from hometown airline TWA. Thankfully, the STL-ISP route is served by a single daily two-stop flight, so you quickly book a seat before pondering which clothes will make you look thinnest at the reunion. Identify the airline, aircraft and the two enroute stops in order.
A N S W E R E D

45. (1995) Duty calls in the form of a sales call next week out in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From your home office in New Orleans, you figure you’ll probably have to connect in Houston or Dallas but are pleased to find a one stop direct flight that departs New Orleans each morning and arrives in Albuquerque with plenty of time left in the day to complete your business. You ask your secretary to book you a seat and then return your attention to the Metairie project.
It's not Southwest, America West, Continental, American or Northwest but it is a 727 of some variant

47. (1988) It had been a nice ride thus far – as buses go. You’d boarded the Grey Dog in Wilmington, DE earlier this evening and were headed to Scranton, PA when suddenly the driver came on over the PA and announced that there was some kind of a problem with the engine and he’d have to get off the road. Thankfully he was able to do so at a Sunoco Travel Plaza just off I-95 on the outskirts of Philadelphia. He then contacted dispatch on his radio only to be informed that a replacement bus wouldn’t be available until sometime after 11:30pm. Whaaat? No way! You need to be in Scranton before midnight! Maybe you could fly there. You call US Air whose agent informs you that their last flight of the night between Philly and AVP departs in 12 minutes. However, she’s kind enough to let you know that another airline has a flight departing Philly in about an hour and half, with a jet no less. Calls to that airline and then a taxi company prove fruitful and soon you’re on your way to AVP in First Class no less, courtesy of the FN/YN designated flight. Identify the airline and aircraft you’re flying upon.

49. (1989) Your old college buddy from Carnegie Mellon University has called to let you know he’s recently come upon a pair of tickets to this weekend’s Steelers game against the Patriots. Wanna go?! 57. (1998) From your home in Scottsdale, Arizona you need to travel to Montreal, Quebec for a symposium on light rail options and operations hosted by Bombardier, one of the world's largest companies in the rail vehicle and equipment manufacturing and servicing industry. With plenty of time available to you before the symposium, you decide to have a bit of fun with your flights out to Montreal. To wit, you’ve found a combination of flights that will allow you to
.
  • Fly between PHX and YMX aboard a 727, 737 and 747 in that order
  • Both the 727 and 737 flights will be in all-economy configurations with only the 747 offering premium class seating
  • The 727 and 737 flights are not variant specific
It’s worth noting that given the departure point of the 747 into YMX, one and only one routing meets the specifications outlined above, especially given the use of single class configured aircraft. BTW, you will overnight at the final connection point though this shouldn’t have any bearing on the parameters described above. Good luck, men!
The first segment has been identified as ATA PHX-MDW on a 727. The 747 into YMX comes out of Pittsburgh. So, all we need is the 737 operator between MDW and PIT. It wasn't Midway...

58. (1988) You’ve had a great week of sailboarding around the Bahamas and now it’s time to return home to Nashville. Your trip out to Nassau involved a couple of connections, but on the way home you’ll be on a direct flight – albeit one that makes two enroute stops. That’s fine by you – there’ll be less chances to damage or lose your rad sailboard. Identify the airline, aircraft and the two enroute stops in order please.

49. Hmmmmmm......how about MLB - MCO - RDU - PIT. And, oh by the way, wasn't it a 28-28 tie game?

You're definitely on the right track - er - flight path here, JL. The other stop wasn't MCO but you are very, very close...

As for the game, the Steelers beat the Patriots 28-10. That 1989 squad finished 9-7 and was quarterbacked by a good 'ol boy from Louisiana named Bubby Brister. They lost to the Broncos in the AFC Divisional Playoff game 23-24.

57- well, our esteemed friend and colleague Seat 2A has again demonstrated his self-described “question researching prowess” with this stumper:
  • for the 747, we’re probably looking at either Aerolineas Argentinas or Royal Air Maroc JFK-YMX ... I’ll say AT
  • the only carrier I can recall with a single-class 727 (72S) out of PHX was ATA, which would have deposited you at Midway/MDW or Indianapolis/IND
  • I seem to remember North American (as the operating carrier for El Al) on both LAX-JFK and ORD-JFK using 738s, but ORD would involve a change of airports that wasn’t part of the original problem... however, recalling the answer to a recent question about Detroit, I’ll offer Pro Air with a 734 IND-DET-JFK

Let me save you a little time here. Like you, when I think 747s to Montreal from the U.S., my first thought would have been out of JFK. However, in this case the flight originates from a different airport. You are however correct that PHX-MDW is the first leg via ATA. There are no airport changes along the way, so where's that 737 going to take you out of Midway?

On a separate note, I draw attention to this portion of your answer: "I seem to remember North American (as the operating carrier for El Al) on both LAX-JFK and ORD-JFK using 738s" So far as I know, North American never had anything more than CONDITIONAL STOPOVER TRAFFIC rights over intra-US routes. But then, I could be wrong. Anybody know for sure?

UA STL-ORD-ALB-ISP with a 733?

An excellent guess, Herb. This is a tough one given the number of carriers that serve ISP from points south and west. That said, I don't recall United ever serving ISP with mainline equipment. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking United Express out of IAD yes, but with 737s or larger, no. In any event, the airline we're looking for did operate a 737 on this route, but along an entirely different routing. Please, do have another go at this one!

Piedmont 737-200?

Another good guess, but no - the airline we're looking for was operating a considerably larger jet on this route...

57- given the limited number of fifth freedom flights between the US and Montreal, how about a rare Quiz appearance by Southwest (to Detroit/DTW), thence BA to YMX

49- given that my first erroneous guess included JAX, I would like to offer Daytona Beach (DAB)

It’s worth noting that given the departure point of the 747 into YMX, one and only one routing meets the specifications outlined above, especially given the use of single class configured aircraft. BTW, you will overnight at the final connection point though this shouldn’t have any bearing on the parameters described above. Good luck, men!

Given the limited number of fifth freedom flights between the US and Montreal, how about a rare Quiz appearance by Southwest (to Detroit/DTW), thence BA to YMX

Detroit's a great guess given BA's historical presence there. Without checking I was about to say BA was running an L-1011 out of Detroit but if I've learned anything over the years, it never hurts to double check - especially given the occasional gaffes on my part that I've uncovered. So I double checked. Per the OAG (Pocket OAG in this case) that I referenced for this question, BA isn't even shown to be operating a flight out of DTW into YMX. Hmph. Surprising. So - DTW is out. I also double checked the city from which I found BA to be operating its 747 into YMX and yep - the flight's still there. Also worthy of note - Southwest was not the 737 operator of note for this question. So - the search continues. Good luck!

49. (1989) Your old college buddy from Carnegie Mellon University has called to let you know he’s recently come upon a pair of tickets to this weekend’s Steelers game against the Patriots. Wanna go?! Hmm… A quick check of the schedules shows a single airline offering two daily direct flights between your hometown airport in Melbourne, FL and Pittsburgh. Both flights make the same two stops along the way, and in terms of total travel time either one would time out about the same as if you’d made a 1.5 hour connection in Atlanta. You decide to book a seat on the early evening flight and call your buddy with the good news. Name the airline, the aircraft and the two stops. And if you’re really up for it, the score of the game.
It's AA routing through RDU and one other airport with an MD80

Given that my first erroneous guess included JAX, I would like to offer Daytona Beach (DAB)

That's the one one we're looking for. Good call, J Here's the schedule:

American AA 894 Melbourne (MLB) 537p-614p Daytona Beach (DAB) 644p-821p D Raleigh/Durham (RDU) 856p-1012p Pittsburgh (PIT) DC-9-80 Daily
