I have been having co.com issues for at least the last few days. One of my reservations simply disappeared on Friday, and I had to call web support to have it reinstated.
I requested a receipt this morning and it still has not come through. |
Many people on Flyertalk have grammar issues, but one of the most common errors that I truly despise is the use of the word "infer" when one really means "imply." The following sentence is a classic example: "I'm not sure I'm buying all of it, though - he infers that he was able to lie down and sleep before takeoff. I'm not aware of any FAs who wouldn't make him sit up during takeoff" (emphasis added).
It is no wonder that the US has become, at best, a second-world country, for the most part. Our educational system is a disgrace. |

People who don't capitalize are the ones who drive me whacky. Or use 'that' instead of 'who' - as in 'People that don't capitalize..."

Why is it so hard to spell the word "loser?" As in, "he's a loser." I can't count how many times I've seen it spelled, "looser."
I would venture a guess that in the past few years this has become one of the errors that has eclipsed the proper usage in forums such as FT. |
I posted some proposed details for the BRU DO. Feel free to comment in that thread.

There are also the they're/there/their, since/sense, it's/its, to/too/two and similar errors in almost every thread. A few regular posters are also quite guilty of writing things that don't even make sense. I don't think it's only the educational system that's to blame, though. I know it's partly responsible, but in many, if not most, cases, this stuff is being taught. People just don't care to learn it and write correctly. |

Yes, could be on the beginning or the end of the sentence. If it is in the middle, than it is an adjective. Am I right ?

About 75% of my (professional) job requires writing that is distributed to mass audiences. It's "an essential job skill," per my job description. I'm a former (read: reformed) copywriter and I'm writing a book. In short, I fancy myself an above average writer. Unfortunately, when I go back and re-read some of the drivel I post on FT I'm ashamed at some of the very rudimentary mistakes I make. Then I realize that it's just an internet message board and I don't care. Sometimes I'll go back and clean up my posts, most often, I don't. I got in a fight on another internet message board* because the mods were "cleaning up" another person's posts. I cried bloody murder at "selective editing" and argued that a person's grammar/punctuation/spelling mistakes demonstrate the cognitive ability of a poster and it helps the reader put the post in a clearer context. I'll take someone a bit more seriously if they can clearly articulate their position as opposed to someone who sounds like a raving lunatic sanding on a corner preaching that chickens are the sign of the impending apocalypse**. By the way, my literary kryptonite is affect vs effect. You can explain it to me 1,000 times every day, but for some reason it just won't stick in my brain. -sigh- A friend of a friend read it on the internet, it must be true. *I do have a life, I swear **They are |
