I'm awake now. Last night I was wired and couldn't get to bed. That, and I was determined to fix, once and for all, the driver issues I was having on both my computers with my two week old HP multi-function printer/scanner/copier/fax. Turns out I should have followed my instincts from the start and chunked HP's CD full of consumer-oriented bloatware in the trash, and just downloaded the "For corporate IT managers only" driver-only software package from the HP website. After giving up on the CD, I uninstalled everything, downloaded the driver-only software, installed it, and in less than five minutes it was working on my desktop PC. Did the same thing on my work laptop and it worked too. Then I finally went to bed… at 3:05 AM. I still need to do the same on my partner's laptop, but at least now I have network printing and scanning working, and the printer is set where it won't change IP addresses every time we cycle the power on it, which is what started the whole mess in the first place.

HP gets a huge  on this one. Awesome (not in the CO 1E Awesome™ way)printer, but ultracraptastic software to run it. One could call the entire experience Awesome™, but that would probably be too nice. It was worse than that.

Can you use it as an adverb?

HP's software is a fiasco. I have no idea why they need so many bits to make a crappy printer do its thing. I've had to repair my mothers computer (remotely ) several times because of the crap they keep installing associated with the printers. I love HP for corporate printer hardware, but their consumer stuff is crap.

Both these situations were found by the accountant months later.

Like it or not, if an employer overpays you, and you are on direct deposit or have already deposited the check, they have every right to demand the money back immediately. Many will offer to just adjust the next paycheck, but there's risk in that, as there's no guarantee you'll have a next paycheck, or that if you do, it will be enough to cover the adjustment. I see this all the time in my work, and am actually surprised your payroll person was willing to let the previous 20 hour overpayment just slide. I'm not surprised it was caught in an audit though. Payroll records are one thing that auditors expect to balance to the penny every time, and we catch lots of hell from them when they don't, and the error wasn't found quickly and immediately corrected.

I almost didn't catch the pseudonym - very cool. I have to edit my B&N list since a certain parental figure for once actually listened to me when it comes to Christmas and bought me what I wanted. Gotta delete the books she bought me and add this one.

The most exciting part of this is that I sent the prints to Costco. I've heard that their photo processing is excellent; we shall see.

The photos turned out great, for those interested. From upload to pickup in 2 hours. 1 8x10 and 2 5x7 = $2.43, tax included. :D ^

And to throw my late $.02 into the awful writing discussion, there are certain posters that I won't name who seem to think that we are living in the times of The Federalist Papers and capitalizing the important words in a sentence. What is the deal with that? And I'm another of those people who fancies himself as a cut above when it comes to the written word. I've been paid for my writing and editing skill on multiple occasions; therefore it is above average. Simple mistakes that I stopped making in fourth grade that adults on this board routinely make drive me insane. The one that kills me is when someone says they have an "isle" seat. Really? And I'm totally with belynch on the selective editing thing: if someone can't write well, let their stupidity shine thru...it's a terrific tool for the other people.

This bit of advice should be followed when connecting anything to any computer. :)

Agreed. And the sad thing is this is an OfficeJet Pro and marketed as a medium-duty business class machine. The CD that came with it installed about 10 programs, even after I deselected much of the optional crap using the custom install, and still refused to find the printer over my network about 75% of the time. I could use the Add Printer function in Windows to add the printer and it would print just fine, but then I couldn't scan over the network, which is part of the reason I invested in this thing to begin with. When I installed the basic, driver-only package from the HP website, which is designed for corporate IT use, it all worked fine. I bypassed the stupid search for the printer that was holding up the install, keyed in the IP address, and it found it immediately. And now not only does it work flawlessly, but the software takes up about 75% less space on my hard drive.

I had a similar experience with the previous printer, which did not have built-in networking, and discovered the corporate IT driver-only packages on the HP site at that time. This time I've learned my lesson — for future HP printer installs, I'm going there first, and downloading that software. The CD can just go in the trash.
