Wiki for using AS (Alaska) Miles on JL (Japan Airlines)

All awards for domestic Japan will default to Economy (including international F or J award with domestic segments).
However, these can often be upgraded at reasonable cost at the ticket counter in the Japan connecting airport

Award Chart
If not listed it's not available - EXCEPTION: Hawaii-Asia awards are bookable, not yet on the chart, at the same prices as Continental U.S.-Asia
(As of March 2017, Premium Economy is no longer available)
(As of October 2019, stopovers are no longer allowed on intra Asia awards)

For 2021:
F awards are available again to book directly on AS website (no need to book J then try to change segment) as of June 12, 2021.

Wow - the 14-day window for F on JAL really really works! I was expecting one or two seats to open up - not three. Hmm... I'm in a pickle now. On the same day as my outbound ANA YVR-NRT J seats, I found 3x LAX-HND JAL F seats. Snagged them for 210k AS miles. I've never experienced 3-class international first, nor have either of my flying companions (and at their age - if not now, probably never!) I'd hate to have stranded 104k of my Chase points over on Virgin Atlantic with no idea what they'll ever be used for - but I'd really like to try the JAL F product. Good decision to have to make.

Even in Business Class you can select many seats without status, mainly windows near the front of the Business Cabin are blocked for OWE.

In First Class most seats are available for assignment without status. On the 777-300ER the only seats blocked in F for OWE are 1A and 1K and even those become available for airport assignment if not already taken by OWE.

Odd that I'm not seeing any award flights on JAL from SIN-NRT through Alaska's site. Only seeing Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines as options.

Noticed this as well recently. They’ve really screwed around with the whole flight search results experience over the past year or so, and JL has been one of the worst affected.

Calendar searches are horrendous and will often only show non-stop results - click in to day that wasn’t showing as available and one-stop options will show up.

Routing and same airline partner changes to an existing booking have become close to useless as well depending on the partner. Most of this difficulty managing and booking JL only cropped up recently, as I didn’t have any difficulties booking and modifying a SIN-HND-JFK trip earlier this year.

Another frustrating thing - JAL not releasing J seats for award - recently got a F award sfo-nrt (happy to get this) F was 5/6 occupied. Business was about 80-90% empty - but IIRC even a few days prior to flight no J awards were available.
I am very happy to have flown F but I really don't understand their flight management strategy.

But is this an Alaska issue? It is more likely JAL is not releasing award seats. Have you checked JAL availability through other partners?

I looked at schedules and paid availability for a couple of weeks in November on Expert Flyer.

SIN-NRT: JL has one flight a day on a 767. SQ has two flights a day, 1 on 777 and 1 on a 787, so JL has much more limited capacity on this route than SQ.

SIN-HND: JL has 1 daily flight on a 789 plus 1 flight that operates only 2 days a week on a 767. SQ has 2 flights daily flights both on a 359. Again, JAL has significantly lower capacity than SQ on this route.

SIN-NRT on JL especially seems be J0 on many days I checked in the two week November time frame so they are either selling these seats or the awards are gone. Given the loads they are seeing on this route I would not expect to see a lot of awards until they increase their capacity. SQ is playing to win and it is working.

I did not look at Economy availability much but there are Y seats selling on most days when there was J0 so Y awards are more likely to show up than J if you really need a JL award.

Yeah it's weird, maybe they think they can sell J seats, but probably won't be able to sell all F seats?

Enjoy! I haven't experienced ANA but JAL F is one of my fave first class products. (Currently in the F lounge at NRT waiting to go back to SFO). Didn't realize they released 3 at once - that's great to hear.

So is there a schedule when they release J seats like the 14-day schedule for F ?

Unlikely since F costs maybe double J - plus the idea that they'd sell 50 or so J seats a week ahead of flight seems ?unlikely
I, OTOH, don't run the airline so perhaps I don't need to understand their strategy - but can say that it appears very odd

F Seats for Couples

Unrelated to the act of actually booking the journey itself, but figured I'd ask here anyway. For F, what's the best configuration for a couple (on JL 3, for example, which is a 1-2-1 setup)?
I'm a bit torn on whether we should grab the middle (1DG or 2DG) or try for two windows, or one window and one middle.

The JL3, 777-300ER, will have 1A and 1K blocked for OWE until airport checkin so unless you are OWE your 2 windows would be limited to 2A and 2K (different sides of the cabin). Whether you prefer sitting together in the middle or separately to get a window view is up to you. On the 777-300ER the foot rest doubles as a mini-seat (it may even have it's own seatbelt? Can't recall) so you can both sit across the table from one another at meal-time if you are not sitting together and it's not turbulent.

To add, the mini-seat/ottoman does have it's own seatbelt. You technically can dine together, but it'll be quite a squeeze

Ah yes, was aware of 1AK being blocked off
I guess a different way of asking this question is -- if we're in the middle, will we be able to see each other more conveniently than if we were separated by an aisle or front/back (if we can score 1A or 1K)? Is the window *really* worth it?
