Wiki for using AS (Alaska) Miles on JL (Japan Airlines)

All awards for domestic Japan will default to Economy (including international F or J award with domestic segments).
However, these can often be upgraded at reasonable cost at the ticket counter in the Japan connecting airport

If not listed it's not available - EXCEPTION: Hawaii-Asia awards are bookable, not yet on the chart, at the same prices as Continental U.S.-Asia

(As of October 2019, stopovers are no longer allowed on intra Asia awards)

For 2021:

3 years worth of people wanting to visit and pent up demand finally being released. And a lot of airlines probably haven't loaded additional flights back into the schedule yet either - and the ones they're loading back in, they'll probably gouge cash interest first, too.

If you were looking at flying to Japan in 2023 on points you should have booked this summer. They werent going to be locked forever.

Business Class Availability

Trying to book business class flight from YVR-NRT in November

On the AS web site, I see availability for my dates in Main (Economy) Class for 35K

But First Class shows as N/A for pretty much all dates.

I know that YVR-NRT doesn't have a first class, but how would I check the business class award availability (or would it show up under first class if available).

Also, does JAL typically release award availability 2 weeks out for business class similar to what they do for first class.

Thanks in advance for your help.

See the posts right above yours. It's PEAK demand for Japan now. If J doesn't show up, it's just not available, which isn't a surprise at all. I would not expect JAL or any other japanese airline to release more award seats than what's currently available until the end of the year. Maybe even past Sakura.

There was PLEEEENTY of time to book the past few months when it was clear they were gearing towards a reopen at minimum in 2023. Why would they give away seats when demand to come to Japan is going to be sky high?

Argument doesn't hold water. They are giving away Y seats, tons of them. They just aren't giving away J/F seats.

And now with the impending Alaska deval in December, this is not good at all.

That's great. I hadn't decided my travel plans yet for 2023 until recently. Not to mention the impending AS deval coming later this year, going to need to burn my points asap.

I can still see some US-TYO J awards, you just have to be veeeeeery flexible with dates.

I'll keep looking.. was looking for ORD-TYO between Feb and early May and didn't see anything. Needs to be ORD though, else I'll just fly on SQ out of LAX or SFO.

If miles aren't a concern, then sure, that's an alternative. JAL is obviously cheaper, depends on how you value that.

So youre limiting yourself to one city, during Sakura season, and relatively close even during normal times.

Its doubtful youd find space in a non pandemic year. If you are indeed worrying about a devalue spend the miles on SQ. Otherwise, book Y and hope space opens T-14

That's sort of how supply and demand works...
