PLEASE LIST YOUR RETENTION OFFERS IN THE CHART AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS WIKIPOST.
The 2023 version of this thread is HERE.

AmEx official term for what we call Retention Offer is Loyalty Incentive (offer).
Amex representatives/agents have no discretion over retention offers, its all computer/algorithm generated. Often there are 2 offers; points or miles for certain spend within certain timeframe, statement credit for same spend and timeframe. The agent might only state one of these, might need to ask about the other if interested. Sometimes a 3rd offer to use miles or points to pay annual fee.

Usually available every 13 months. Accepting an offer obligates keeping the account open for 1 year.

Theres no rhyme or reason to these offers. Some high use cards get no significant offer, some minimal use cards get high offer. Offers can change on a daily basis. No reports of adverse action due to asking about retention offers too often. Can discuss multiple (personal or biz cards) in one call. Agents are required to read a somewhat lengthy disclaimer if an offer is accepted AND if an offer is declined.

Membership Consulting (Retention) department:
May 2024: Possible that 800-452-3945 has been discontinued as a direct # to Membership Consulting, additional confirmation would be helpful.
May 2024: Possible that 800-875-5592 is a new direct # to Biz Membership Consulting, additional confirmation would be helpful.
May 2024: Reports of Membership Consulting currently being available on weekends.

800.452.3945 (After entering your card number you may hear a "no longer in service" type of message -- if this happens, hangup and call again.)
-OR-
855.857.7657
Upon inputting full account number, without # sign, call will automatically route to Personal or Business Membership Consulting (Retention) department. Each department can only discuss the applicable cards.

Hours: 08:00 - 23:00 Eastern Standard Time
Chat with a Membership Consulting Services Monday to Friday, 9:00AM to 5:30PM ET (7/19 - quoted 8:30 AM to 3:45 PM ET for Amex Business account)

To access Chat:
Login to the Amex App, then press the Chat icon at top right.
Via the web:
Log into http://americanexpress.com
Select "Help" at top right
Select the blue "Live Chat" button.
  • If you product change your Amex, they will prorate the annual fee refund.
  • If you cancel your account completely, you will be refunded the annual fee if within 30 days of the print date of the statement showing the fee. After that, there's no refund.

I've heard that the general recommendation is 13 months, not 12 months. So I would suggest cancelling as late as possible without having to "net" pay that next annual fee.

Is it a personal card or a business card? On personal cards, per a federal law I think, you get the annual fee refunded if you cancel a certain number of days after it was billed, even if you already paid IIRC. But I'm not sure if that rule applies to business cards.

And the danger is not just Amex possibly clawing the points back. The other danger is Amex refusing to let you get any other offers for quite a while.

The above thread's title does list all the reasons people have found for restricting bonuses, reports in that long thread list many other reasons.

I'm not sure where 12 weeks (or 13) comes into the picture here. I agreed to keep it open for 12 months and wasn't sure if the day I hit 12 months I can close.

This was an NLL Biz Plat that I opened 2 years ago and I ended up waiting until yesterday 3/8 to close it. I had just a few days left that I could still get the AF fully refunded (which is 30 days from date billed regardless of card type) so I wanted to get it over with.

No retention offer available as expected, card canceled, and I already have $695 credit on my card which I will transfer to another card as payment.

That's probably what it is. Waiting 13 months is for getting another retention though. You can still close at the 12 months mark as that is what is the agreed upon time when accepting a retention offer.

Delta Platinum Amex: Offered 70,000 miles or $350 statement credit, with $3k spend needed in 3 months.

Quite a hard push by the retention desk, trying to get me to see value in "Enhanced Companion Certs". TBH the two times in the past I tried to use this there was never any seats in a qualified fare class, so in practice a useless benefit (YMMV). With the loyalty program changes I see less DL in my travels anyway.

Cancelled card.

Just called for my Schwab Plat for first renewal, AF post date 2/15, called 3/11.
15k or $150 for $3k spend in 3 mo. I spent around $8-9k in past year, used the airline and Saks credits in 2023 but not in 2024, though I do get Uber credits and the entertainment credits.

My questions- how often do the offers change? Is it weekly or daily?
And are the phone and online chat offers the same?

I am a little surprised my Schwab offer is so low. I used to get 25-50k on my vanilla Plat for years before the offers dried up.

Average probably around $3-4k per month. I don't have business level spend.

Retention call today:

11.5 month old Biz Gold, AF to be billed in 1 month: offered $5k/10k MR/3 months.
11.5 month old Biz Plat, 1 of 3-4 NLL Biz Plat, AF to be billed in 1.5 months: offered $30k/40k MR/3 months.
11 month old Biz Gold Delta, AF to be billed in 2 months: system crashed, no info available to agent.
11 month old Biz Marriott, AF to be billed in 2.5 months: system crashed, no info available to agent.
(Minimal use of all cards after receiving SUB.)

Next call planned in ~1.7-2.0 months, within 30 days of (above) Biz Gold and Biz Plat AFs posting. Based on this thread my expectation for desirable retention offers is very low, expectation for closures is high.

(Due to 1 fraudulent charge and a new account number several months ago, despite multiple requests to cease, I’m now subject to highly aggravating & time wasting 2nd and 3rd level authentication. Similar to that of 6 months ago on a different card except 6 months ago I was successfully able to have it ended upon request. Thus I now make retention calls much less frequently and try to kill 2 or 3 or 4 birds with one stone discuss multiple cards in 1 call.)

(The specific aggravation and time wasting described above has given me very easy justification for why I (say I) want to close the account. Immediately upon connection with a Membership Consulting human being agent I explain the aggravation and that I’ve been an AmEx member for 20 years and I’m very familiar with the card’s perks and my usage of the card. Consequently I’ve been able to head off all the annoying discussions of card rewards and benefits and (after a 10 minute 2nd/3rd level Authentication department inquisition) immediately discuss any available Loyalty Incentive offers for multiple accounts.)

(Invariably the Membership Consulting agent (apparently) speaks English as a 1st language which helps immensely for these calls. Invariably the 2nd/3rd level Authentication agent (apparently) does not speak English as a 1st language. IME agents who do not (apparently) speak English as a 1st language are not able to understand questions or discussions that are uncommon or unusual or “off-script”.)

(Due to usually changing statement billing date immediately after receiving the SUB and AmEx AFs posting on the day prior to statement closing date, my AFs usually post at ~12.5-13.5 months.)

(The thread subject is OFFERS, acceptance or lack thereof is moot. Moot: adjective, 1: subject to debate, dispute, or uncertainty, 2: having little or no practical relevance, typically because the subject is too uncertain to allow a decision; historical: an assembly held for debate, especially in Anglo-Saxon and medieval times; law: a mock trial set up to examine a hypothetical case as an academic exercise.)

Why don't you just try using the online chat feature which (I can't say for sure) I'm assuming would not be subject to this lengthy authentication since it are chatting when already logged into your account?

I disagree and I don't see why cardholders shouldn't share if they find an offer to be acceptable or not. As has been discussed in the past it's of interest to see which offers are acceptable to most, which to some, and which to none. From your post I gather that at this time none of the offers were acceptable to you and were declined but cards kept open for now.

On a side note, I'm also pretty sure Amex collects data on offer acceptance and declination to curate future retention offers in general as well as specifically for each card holder.

You know what happens when you make an A$$ (of) U (and) ME . (Sorry, couldnt resist, please dont be insulted or disrespected and/or take it personally.)

IME chat feature is even more aggravating to the point of infuriation. Logging in is annoying due to 2nd and/or 3rd level authentication. Chat then invariably involves waiting a while for what is likely a bot whos chatting with multiple people at the same time thus long delays between replies and insists on typing all the nonsense about perks and benefits and usage. Im a 2-fingered hunt-and-peck typist, its challenging to type all the explanations.

Acceptable and accepted are not synonymous in this context. Sometimes unacceptable offers are accepted due to specific circumstances. Everyones situation is unique, everyone should make decisions about what they accept based on the facts (available offers) without outside influence. To one person $30k/40k MR is worth it, to others its not; neither of those opinions (or decisions) affect my choice which could very well change in the future for a different card.

Understood on both points. If chat doesn't absolve you of this painful authentication than that's obviously not the better option.

I still don't see why members shouldn't share if they accepted a particular offer or not and even if they want to share the reasons for same, but to each their own.
