PLEASE LIST YOUR RETENTION OFFERS IN THE CHART AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS WIKIPOST.
The 2023 version of this thread is HERE.
AmEx “official” term for what we call Retention Offer is “Loyalty Incentive” (offer). Amex representatives/agents have no discretion over retention offers, it’s all computer/algorithm generated. Often there are 2 offers; points or miles for certain spend within certain timeframe, statement credit for same spend and timeframe. The agent might only state one of these, might need to ask about the other if interested. Sometimes a 3rd offer to use miles or points to pay annual fee.
Usually available every 13 months. Accepting an offer obligates keeping the account open for 1 year.
There’s no rhyme or reason to these offers. Some high use cards get no significant offer, some minimal use cards get high offer. Offers can change on a daily basis. No reports of adverse action due to asking about retention offers too often. Can discuss multiple (personal or biz cards) in one call. Agents are required to read a somewhat lengthy disclaimer if an offer is accepted AND if an offer is declined.

American Express (USA) retention offers (2024)
I'm trying to figure out the timing when I can ask for another retention offer and/or actually cancel my Amex personal Gold. I asked for an offer last year on 1/10/23 after my annual fee had posted and received 15k MR/2k spend. This year's annual fee posted on 12/14/23. I want to ask for another offer and if I don't get one I'll cancel the card but seem to have agreed to keep the card for 12 months. I also know (?think) that I have to cancel within 30 days of fee posting to get refund. Does this mean that my only opportunity to ask for another offer/cancel and get refunded is between 1/10/24 and 1/14/24? Thanks!

You should cancel by 1/13 because that's 30 days from the 12/14 AF posting. So basically you have a 3 day cancelation window that is between 1/11 and 1/13 to comply with the 12 month rule for retention offers and the 30 day rule for getting the AF reversed.

No retention this year on platinum. Tried a couple of times. I have had the card for decades. I was reminded I got an offer last year - perhaps this is the reason - 13 months will not have elapse until I can cancel this renewal. I am contemplating getting the Schwab Platinum. Benefits seem identical, but since I have a Schwab account I will be getting a yearly rebate going forward.
I know I must apply separately and then cancel the one I have, hopefully an instant approval. Likely no signup bonus as I have a platinum (though got it as I said decades ago)
Anyone one transitioned from Platinum to Schwab Platinum. Just having to switch cards on the auto pays that generate rebates (media, clear, Walmart, etc) and other autopay items makes it almost not worth it. If anyone got the Schwab to replace the plain platinum, what was the experience like?

Obviously rejected. I'll drop the card if there isn't a better offer. I can live with $10k for 40k points over 6 months. Anything less and I'm canceling.

1/03/24 20k points for $20k spend. Declined. Looks like this is the standard offer these days. I asked if there were any other offers and she said no. I have the annual fee coming up in a couple weeks, so I decided to try to get a retention offer ahead of it so I can get another one next year (getting around the 13 month rule).
Curious if anyone has noticed better offers by phone vs chat? I had another biz platinum last year that I couldn't get a retention offer for via chat, but I got a 55k/$4k spend offer by calling a few days later!

- offers are provided by the computer to the agent, they have no flexibility
- offers can change over time (hence the recommendation to try a few times)
I don’t recall seeing any reports that would lead me to believe that one communications channel has better offers than the other. If that was the case, presumably people wouldn’t use the other one.

Has anyone gotten offers from the first agent contacted? Or, do they have to forward you to a "Membership Consulting professional" for offers?
Twice now, via chat, I've gotten, "Let me transfer you to a Membership Consulting professional who can better assist you with your request," only to eventually be told no offers.
Now, I'm wondering if the first agent sees no offers but isn't allowed to process a close. So, they have to forward you to the "Membership Consulting professional" whose job it is to retain you even if there are no offers and can also close the account, if requested.
Thoughts?
ETA: Was also told Membership Consulting professionals are only available Monday to Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM ET
