I've heard that the general recommendation is 13 months, not 12 months. So I would suggest cancelling as late as possible without having to "net" pay that next annual fee.
Is it a personal card or a business card? On personal cards, per a federal law I think, you get the annual fee refunded if you cancel a certain number of days after it was billed, even if you already paid IIRC. But I'm not sure if that rule applies to business cards.
And the danger is not just Amex possibly clawing the points back. The other danger is Amex refusing to let you get any other offers for quite a while.
