Wiki/How-To/FAQ: Start here if this is your first time visiting this thread
If you have done this trip please help improve the wiki!

Why would a DL SkyPesos member do this now that RDMs are earned on ticket cost?

Either for the MQMs, or to actually visit SIN FWIW there are posts in the thread about similar itineraries on AA.

How do I search for dates/prices?

One way is to use ITA Matrix. Click on "Advanced routing codes" and enter something along the lines of:
  • outbound: dl+ dtw nrt
  • inbound: dl+ nrt dtw

NOTE: Basic Economy (E) fares have been spotted on this route and come with heavy restrictions. If you want to exclude E fares from your search you can add f ~bc=e in the separate "extension codes" box

See post 1329 for some screenshots (which are now out of date, the routing codes and extension code have been split into two separate input boxes)

You may wish to experiment with things like dtw,atl or x or even x+. Read the advanced routing codes help for more ideas. (DL no longer flies JFK-NRT nonstop)

I found an itinerary that works for me, how do I book it?
  • you can try a multi-city booking on Kayak or Google Flights and click through to Delta (you can save some effort by omitting the implicit/forced connection through NRT for example)
  • if you are comfortable installing add-ons etc. you can use the ITA userscript (see the wiki at the top of that thread)
  • for the less technically-inclined there is also the Book with Matrix helper site (and its related FT thread)
  • call in if none of the above methods work or e.g. you want to add a stopover

Do I need a visa?

No visa is needed for transits (or in fact for visiting up to 90 days, subject to qualifications)
You can get your boarding passes for your Delta return flight at Transit Lounge D, which opens 3 hours before departure.

What are the best seats?

Assuming you're stuck in Y (no GUCs etc.)

Will there be wifi on the international legs?

DL now touts International Wi-Fi is available on 100% of all wide body, long-haul aircraft providing near global coverage. Given "long-haul" this may not apply to NRT-SIN.

777s should all have wifi: thread #1, thread #2; although it is still subject to coverage/availability, seems to drop out in the far northern parts of the route, and coming down the Russian coast it seemed like http was slow but working and anything else like https took forever and/or was blocked

Delta doesn't seem to sell the Gogo global day pass on their web site but you can buy it directly from Gogo. You can use the same pass on both domestic and international flights in any order as long as it is within 24 hours.

FlexPerks VISA single-flight passes can NOT be used on international flights (they do not appear as a redemption choice when you sign in to Gogo in flight)

SIN airport facilities

If you are doing a quick turn, you can remain airside the whole time. There are a number of 24-hour food outlets in the transit mall areas (center of each terminal)

Each of the 3 terminals has their Transit Hotel on Level 3. Prices are similar for all:
-Terminal 1 - Plaza Premium Lounge recently opened Aerotel. Book at: Aerotel Terminal 1
-Terminal 2 and 3 - Harilela Hospitality runs an Ambassador Transit Hotel in each Terminal, above the Orchid Garden and Movie Theater, respectively. Book at: Ambassador Transit Hotels

Note that you can actually stay in either of the 3, regardless of which Terminal you arrive in. However, when leaving the airport, you need to exit through the same Terminal as that you arrived in.

FT thread on Singapore Airport Lounges

Airport website links:
NOTE: even though the DNATA Sky View lounge lists "Delta Airlines" on the airport web page and appears on a skyteam.com lounge search, it is considered by Delta to be third-party-operated, thus if you are STE+ in Y you will not have access. People have reported gaining access on an upgrade to J but YMMV.

There is free wifi either by receiving a text message code, or by scanning your passport. Previous posts mention just giving an email address, maybe try at the info desks. There are also free Internet stations.

NOTE for U.S. and other ~110V travelers: Singapore uses 230V/50Hz. There are plenty of USB charging ports in the seating areas, and most wall adapters for electronics these days are dual voltage (look for writing on the plug like "Input: 100V-240V") but if not or if you need to plug something else in, bring plug and voltage adapters to be safe.

Things to do in SIN

In descriptions of things to see/do airside, when you see "garden" read "smoking area" especially if you won't be there during daylight, the only other main reason people go there is to smoke.

SkyTrain between terminals runs from 5am-2:30am but you can always walk between any of the terminals as well.

Returning to the US

Even if you don't have Global Entry, CBP has a Mobile Passport Control app -- see program info and app website for d/l and list of participating airports which includes ATL (but not DTW)

You will have to pick up checked bags if any, and then everyone has to go through TSA security. International connections usually have their own checkpoint but it may not have PreCheck or CLEAR. If you want to take advantage of either of these, see airport-specific info below.

Through Delta's partnership CLEAR is free for DM, $79 for other Medallions, and $99 for General Members. Click here for more info on the partnership or to sign up.

Relevant FT threads:
Returning via ATL:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Atlanta (ATL): The Definitive Thread

CLEAR is now open in ATL but only at the domestic end.

For PreCheck, if you arrive in F, when you exit the hallway from customs there is a ticket desk in front of you. Normally the belt for re-checking bags on the left, and TSA screening beyond that. For PreCheck turn instead to the right (away from the drop-off luggage belt) and exit into the arrivals area, go up the escalators, and then you use the regular F terminal security checkpoint.

(It seems like NRT-ATL usually lands in E though... anyone have info to share?)

Returning via DTW:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Detroit (DTW): The Definitive Thread

When you exit customs normally you are directed to the right for rescreening. For PreCheck or CLEAR exit to the left as if you are an local Detroit arriving passenger and you will see some escalators in front of you. Go up 3 sets of escalators (there is a security checkpoint after the 2nd set but it does not have PreCheck). There is also an elevator.

The configuration as of Jan 2017 was, CLEAR without PreCheck was near the top of the escalators. If you have both CLEAR and PreCheck, there is a separate CLEAR lane on the right.

Duty Free Liquids

This post from 2014 says liquor etc must be checked as they cannot pass through screening in NRT/TSA. However this may have changed since then, and duty-free purchases in a Sealed Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) might be permitted:

Its going alright! I removed my previous post because I was sleepy and grumpy and in hindsight decided venting at that moment was not the best idea. Although DL agreed to allow me to use my just-expired GUCs on this trip it turns out no one processed them correctly. Landed in LAX at noon and app was telling me to check in with a agent vs online. Agent looked and apparently i had just been placed on the GUC waitlist without a GUC actually being applied, so the computer was requiring me to present a GUC in order to check in (even tho i was already upgraded on half the flights and waitlisted on the rest....). After about a half hour of her on the phone they agreed to just re-issue my ticket and fix it.

From there everything went great, 77k on the UD was fantastic. 2D on the 767 NRT-SIN was not quite as great as the 747 but the crew easily made up for it Landed about 45 min early (11:15 vs midnight) in SIN and made my way to Marina Bay Sands, had a couple drinks there (Flight, on the 57th floor/rooftop is amazing!) before heading back to the airport. Side note: Although it says the regular check-in counter opens at 3AM....they dont open till 3:55AM. A customer was standing here at 3:30AM and was told to come back a half hour later....he never moved from his place at the front of the closed SP lane......

THEN upon attempting to check in for my returns once the desk opened, it turned out that when they re-issued my ticket for the outbound it totally erased anything on my return tickets, and they ONLY extend one GUC. I showed them the email from DL confirming both were extended but they were unable to do anything so i had to call the DM line and spend another 20+ min having it redone again. Thankfully cleared into 6A SIN-NRT and am now sitting in the NRT lounge 1 of 3 for 3 seats.

Glad you got resolution and hope you get the upgrade out of NRT. There are several posts on FT about having issues with LAX and GUCs (me included.) But to brighter things: did u uber or take that roly-poly bus to/fro Marina Bay Sands and if uber, what did it cost?

Upgrade did clear me into 9C, interestingly enough it did for another passenger too. Showed up with the same seat assignment. Thankfully as we were both looking at our boarding passes in confusion the gate agent ran onto the plane apologizing profusely letting me know I was supposed to be in 9J. Better for me as I prefer the single window seats.

I ended up taking a taxi instead of Uber. My phone was being twitchy switching to my international connection (thankfully knowroaming fixed it so I was able to be connected the whole time after about 30 min emailing tech support). Cost was just over 12 each way. Had a drink at Flight on the 57th floor then another in the lobby bar. Both were fantastic. And fantastically spendy lol, $20 plus tax and tip.

Thanks- for your posts, update from India and on my way home

Currently in CDG in AF lounge, which is very nice in K terminal, food selection better than SC in US, waiting for next flight to SLC and SMF. Thanks for your posts, there are some of you out there who have completed or are completing a MR this week. Let us know how it went. People in India are very gracious and helpful but cities are very crowded, traffic is not good and air quality leaves much to be desired. When you take a pix of sunrise or sunset it is red because of pollution. Beijing may be as bad in the summer but this is much worse than what I remember from last trip. Multiple surgeries done by my son that I could watch and enjoy and appreciate what was being done in an effort to help the people see. There was at least one heartbreaking case of a lady around 30 with severe corneal scarring but she is not able see light (no light perception) so surgery will not help a patient like this. There were some very challenging cases with patients who only had one eye that you could try to salvage so they could see and get around better. Technology can help up to a point but it finally comes down to two things, God's blessings and healing and the skill and judgement of the surgeon and his or her team. Hopefully on a return in 6 months one can see the patients again and how they have done. There is a very capable team of ophthalmologists who will follow and manage the patients that were operated on. Will be glad to be home for a few days before leaving next Tue for some work in SIN and get to be back home by Dec 12. [B]MRers, please post and share your experience. Get your Flu shot, preferably the quadrivalent, cheapest price is Costco for trivalent at $15 and some Walmart Pharmacies will price match. ^ Blessings to all and don't spend all your $ shopping on Black Friday! /B] Cu

Anyone have routing for this run (in ATL, but will fly to LAX/SFO to start) - need about 20K to maintain Diamond status.

Not seeing anything good out of SFO/LAX for the rest of the year right now.

You could try posting in the DL/Sky Team: 2016 Consolidated Mileage/Status/Challenge Runs help needed thread, for example this post from yesterday:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/milea...l#post27537356

ATL-DTW-NRT-TPE-NRT-DTW-ATL is ~16,694 MQMs, then look for the rest somewhere else...

Smile In SC LAX Fares on Nov 29

Discovered 2 fares that may be of interest to MR

$901 ai 3,72 com Dec 7-11 LAX ATL NRT SIN NRT ATL LAX 24,248 MQM That is the best fare I found, may require ON in ATL depending on your flight.

There is one for
$1006 ai 4.15 cpm Dec 4-7 if you are desperate for miles might try these flights and other combinations of days. Don't have time to do more, in SC at LAX awaiting remainder of ATL DTW NRT SIN. SC quiet at 9:51 pm, 1 seat left in J and am 12 and 13 on list so will go with our EC in 19 AB which is an exit row. We do have J on ATL DTW but no GUC till next year when we will both be DM. Get your MR done if you need, don't procrastinate. Our positioning flight SMF LAX was 5000 SM and $11.20 but we had to reclaim bags at LAX as they wouldn't check thru with 5 changes so reclaimed bags and rechecked without any problem. Good thing they allow us 3 each with all the stuff we have to take out for other people there. Coming back small bags will go in large bags as they will be mostly empty. Used to doing only carry on plus briefcase or backpack is what was needed for India except for the surgical instruments which took to two large checked bags plus "goodies" for the doctor and his family who were visiting.

Happy Holidays and travels to all of you. Get your Flu shot and please post lower prices and trip reports. ^ Blessings!

I'm trying to do the run to SIN from ATL but having issues finding flights. Prices are going up. Even trying NYC and LAX. Frustrating. I have an obligation Dec 7th to 9th and it's messing everything up. Maybe try and do the 12th if I can find good routing. Thanks all.
