According to an article I read in the NYT last summer, apparently the founder of the chain modeled the idea on McDonalds -- that said, service and such is much better than one finds at McD's.

I was sipping a glass of Cafe Sua Da as I read this thread. Sigh. Life is good.
My wife and I went to Pho 24 in HCMC two or three times when were there in late Oct-early Nov. Very nice, clean broth, not greasy at all. Many types of beef options to choose from as other posters have mentioned. It is indeed a number of steps up from a McD concept.

My favorite has been in the San Gabriel suburb of LA. The restaurant is called "Golden Deli" located on Las Tunas Dr on Mission Dr. When I lived in L.A. during those years, I frequent this place quite often with my friends. They've been in business for many years. Not only their Pho's, but their spring rolls are also excellent. ^

What is the proper pronunciation of "cafe sua da"? Ordering "coffee" will usually suffice, or you can order by number, but I am often asked if I am sure I know what I want (iced cafe sua da, i.e. coffee with condensed milk over ice).

Any Pho place is good when it doesn't have a creative name with it. I'm so serious when I say that I've seen a Pho place where the store's name was "Pho Qoo."

Sorry, my Vietnamese is limited to asking for soup and prostitutes, and hoping that I keep it sorted out.

Next time, try "Soda Sua Hot Ga" which contains plain soda, evaporated milk, and egg yolk. It's amazing. Probably entirely fattening too, but the sweetness complements very well the hearty Pho dish.

Duh, I spelled it wrong. Sorry. It is Cong Ly. It is at 124 Hester Street. Not a Zagat kind of place. Its a hole in the wall. Below is a link to a food blog which has some posts about it. If you Google it you will find other postings in various places that show that it seems to have a following among Vietnamese in NYC.

Im not Vietnamese but adore pho and Vietnamese food in general and like Cong Ly a lot.

Adding to the World Knowlege of Pho

Living north of Boston now, hitting Pho Lynn on a regular basis (though there is a rather large Vietnamese enclave growing there now). Hit Pho Pasteur in Chinatown a few times, though I consider it hit or miss. If you're in the technology area off 128, there's Pho 1 Woburn on 38N in Woburn. They also serve Thai.

I totally agree! ^

Oh wait... I DID eat two bowls of Pho today. From Pho Mai in Katy, TX

Pho is one of my faves. I have it at least once a week.
