I heard a Singaporean traveler say that they thought the Pho in Singapore was better.

Quite frankly, how can pho be better outside of Vietnam? it is the standard which all other pho in the world is judged.
at 2am, accompanied by a glass of Saigon beer with a big lump of ice in it

bo ne bit tet!

Don't forget the french bread you get on the side. The bread they give you in Nha Trang is heartier than the bread from other places.

That place isn't great, but a little farther south on buford hwy is a place called pho #1 which is, imo, quite good. Also, up in duluth is a place called What the Pho, which isn't bad.

Hey everybody

I also fell in love with Pho and probably even more bun bo hue (although don't really now what is what exactly).

I've visited:

Saigon Pho in Hong Kong(my 1st time) several differnt kinds available very, very tasty. I know of two places, one right in Causeway Bay the other one in Wan Chai (Hennesy Rd i think, this is).

VIET in London also really tasty. Its in Soho where all other restaurants are, off shaftesbury ave. Theres often a little waiting for a seat. Good sign imho.

Zurich: Petit Saigon, small place in Wiedikon but the just sell beef soup, standard pho with the usual condiments, still very good and sofar they only one i had in Switzerland.

There's a widespread belief that Indian food is better in London/UK, and Turkish food (or at least Doener) is better in Berlin... so why not?

Who claims Pho in Vietnam is the standard?

Not sure about a "widespread belief" in UK re Indian food. It is widely understood that UK Indian food is not the same as authentic Indian food (in the vast majority of restaurants) and has been modified to suit UK tastes

For me: most authentic = best

Of course Vietnamese Pho is the standard - it is where the dish originated.

Actually, pho in Viet Nam is not as good as some pho joints in the US, particularly in San Jose, the OC, Houston, Virginia, New Orleans... to name a few highly populated Vietnamese areas. Many reasons contributing to this: the ingredients are significantly better in the US than in VN; most of the original iconic chefs have immigrated to the US, taking their family recipe secrets with them. So pho in the US (at certain places - only) is better than in VN; most other chain places don't measure up as well, because they try to "westernise" the taste.

Queen Bee? Meh.

How can you go wrong with pretty much any of the places in the Eden Center? Especially the ones in the interior corridors.

Queen Bee in its heyday was amazing. It introduced a whole generation of Americans to Vietnamese food. But that was 20 years ago ...

I can't believe I didn't see this thread before. Pho is one of my all time favorite meals.

In SF, I'm a big fan of PPQ out on 19th and Irving, though it varies in quality from night to night. Pho Hoa in the tenderloin has also been good (note - this is not the same Pho Hoa as the San Jose based chain). The SF Chronicle ran a great article on local pho places a few years ago:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...DGRN9HG5P1.DTL

Outside of SF, I love Pho Van in Portland (on SE 82nd). Portlanders tend to have mixed opinions on Pho Van - it has a number of satellite locations around town and is known for serving fairly small portions. Still, I love that it is still family owned and I think the pho broth at the 82nd location is consistently good. It can be difficult to find great pho broth and Pho Van seems to at least be able to keep it consistent.

Spent the last 4 years in Vietnam, so haven't had as many opps in the USA as I'd like. The places I ate in Little Saigon/Garden Grove and NC SD were pretty good, but I wouldn't say they were better than what I've had in VN. My wife says she still likes the Pho better in VN, so I'll let her have my deciding vote ^

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but Richmond (Victoria, Australia) has some incredible pho restaurants.

Long bench tables and hot pho in front of you in minutes which was just wonderful.
