Yeah SC can be a little tough for a good pho. Pho Viet in Northeast CAE opened up about a year ago and does a very decent pho ga. It's about 8$ for a large one.

Is there Pho restaurants in that area that I should focus on? Usually I just drive down Bolsa and stop at one that looks good.
Whenever I'm down in OC, I usually stop by Song Long Restaurant on Bolsa. It's tucked away in the back of a small shopping plaza (across the street from Phuc Loc Tho shopping center). I have never been disappointed with the food there.

Pho 88 Falls Church

In Northern Virginia Pho 88 on Broad St in Falls Church is my favorite.
Great bubble tea, too. (I know it's a silly drink, but I like it. Coconut shake isn't bad, either).

Thank you for the recommendation. I'll try it on my next LA visit.

Thanks, Mike.

Pho in St. Louis

Here I must mention:
Mai Lee Restaurant
844 Delmar Blvd.
St. Louis
T: (314)993-3754

Excellent Pho and other Vietnamese dishes, as can be expected. They have repeatedly been written up for their excellent food in St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
They expect to move in February and their new location can be inquired about.
I sound like a family insider in promoting it, but I am NOT.

If you are ever in the Detroit area, Madison Heights is where you would go for pho. It's 25 minutes from DTW, 5-6 Vietnamese restaurants located between 13 and 14 mile John R and Dequindre road.

I was in New York last weekend and went to Bao Noodles. It's located on 2nd Avenue just south of 23rd street. I had noodles with quail eggs, beef, squid, prawns and vegetables. It was amazing. Here's a bad picture:

For those on the south side of Denver, Pho Saigon at I-25 & Arapahoe is good stuff.

No pho fo' me

I've tried pho many times, but it never agrees with me. I can eat chinese noodles and japanese noodles no problem, but pho for some reason does not do it for me. Am I ordering the wrong kind? What is the best kind of pho to get? I don't like the "gamey" flavor of the meat that's in it.

Used to eat here all the time, but never ordered the pho (because I didn't know what it was).

I will say their Bo Tai Chanh (rare beef with a lemon marinade covered in hundreds of cloves of garlic) is great.

I am seriously addicted to Pho 75 (along Arlington Blvd, in Falls Church VA). It's only $7 for a huuuuuuuuge bowl, too.

it really isn't the kind of pho as much as the place.

i think one of the hidden factors is how they make their broth. i believe it's customary to use beef or ox bones, and the good places know that they need to throw out the first boil, to get rid of the blood and fat. some places add msg, and some people don't like cilantro. and since you mentioned gamey, you might have tried pho with poultry, so perhaps you should try it with beef.

GAH! This makes me so sad! I'm sure there's great pho in SF and nearby. I haven't eaten here yet but I heard that Pho Garden http://phogardensf.com/page.php?Page=home is quite good. They also have the famous Pho Challenge...2lbs of meat and 2lbs of noodles...YIKES!!! But I have had friends eat there and they say its pretty good.

I personally don't care for chicken pho as I don't think it qualifies as real pho, but its a good place to start as an introduction. Also, are you a purist? Some people swear by not adding ANYTHING into their pho or at least add minimal items. I come from the school of "throw whatever condiments are on the table and then some". I like how you can personalize to your tastes. Rare steak or flank is pretty easy to stomach. I would avoid the tendon and tripe if you're not in the "gamey" aspect. The broth should be fragrant and have a really deep flavor profile.

Best of luck! If I go, I'll let you know!

I think that chicken pho is sort of weird, but tripe and tendon are okay
(not gamy in most senses of the word, just interesting in texture.

Seconded! We had lunch at Golden Deli yesterday (hint - be prepared to wait if you go during peak hours, especially on the weekends!) and had bun, pho, and the spring rolls. Yummy!
