LOL - Obviously, you have been trained to eat "inferior" Pho in the U.S.

IMHO, there are a few decent places for Pho in California and other places with large Vietnamese enclaves, but in Vietnam, good Pho can be found at every street corners.

Even among the Vietnamese, they can't even agree to who has the better Pho, northern or southern style Pho.

Check out Noodlepie, it's a blog about Vietnamese food by a British journalist living in Vietnam. He talks about Pho quite often (page 2 & page 3) and his debate on this touchy subject that most Vietnamese would try to avoid Hanoi vs. Saigon Pho and cuisines.

Best Pho in the US?

The I Love Soup! Thread started talking about pho and it got me REAL hungry

The best pho I have had so far is in (of all places) Denver - Pho 95.

What is everyone's favourite? Any of them in Northern California?

Generally the best places for pho in Norcal, and there are a handful, are where the big pockets of Vietnamese reside such as certain parts of San Jose and Milpitas. However, even the mid-sized cities between San Jose and San Francisco will have one or two good pho places.

That being said, we are spoiled here for most types of Asian food such that even what we consider "mediocre" pho is light years ahead of the pho served in many of the other states. I spent over half a year in South Carolina...it was tough. Pho was $9 a bowl too!

For those in Norcal, the cold weather we've been having is perfect for a steaming bowl of pho (or Japanese ramen or Chinese beef noodle soup or... clearly my favorite comfort food is noodle soup)

Pho 75 - 382 Elden Street, Herndon, VA. Good price: $8 or so for Large #12 (can't remember exactly what's in it). Have never waited more than 10 minutes for food, even with parties of 15.

Also, Pho 99 is decent - 2441 Centreville Road, Herndon, VA. However it's a little nice and pricier than Pho 75.

"Sai Gon Pho" on Mason St. in Katy, Texas turns out a decent "Southern Style' Pho with all the choices and "fixin's" (in my eyes, basil, cilantro, bean sprouts and jalapeno slices for garnish). I always ask for Nuoc mam on the side, and Ieven like a bit of tripes. Big bowl: $ 6.15, a bucket full of goodness.

In Waco, the "Clay Pot" near Baylor on IH35 serves a Northern style Pho. The owner's wife is from Hanoi, and the Northern versions seem more "Wintery" than in the South.

Turtle is the bomb. I usually go to their other location on Geary/21st, a little cleaner neighborhood and easier parking. They serve Northern Pho, the broth is clear and with subtle flavor (chicken or beef). They will not give bean sprouts even if asked. Only a couple slices of lime and jalapenos, that's it. They say sprouts will dilute Pho broth. They come as close as you can get to the Pho in Hanoi. The owner is from Hanoi, they have never lived in the South so there's no Southern influences unlike some of the "Pho Hanoi" places you find in the US.

For those who's wondering why a Vietnamese Restaurant is called "Turtle Tower" - Here's a brief history of the Turtle Tower - (Sheesh, I feel like I'm giving the "Turtle Tower" free advertising). The Turtle Pagoda is a picture perfect little shrine in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake. According to legend, in the 1500's a golden sword was taken from Emperor Le Thai To by a turtle in the lake. In some tellings of the tale, the turtle was heroically returning the sword to the lake where it belonged. In others, the turtle supplied the gold sword to the Emperor so he could smite his enemies. Still others say the turtle stole the sword and the Emperor had the lake drained looking for it. And in another variation, the turtle indicated to the Emperor which way his troops should go to win the war. In any case, this shrine was erected to commemorate the a turtle and a sword.

I guess that's why I liked it so much. I believe they also added some ginger in the broth! The noodle is the thicker kind.

Pho Lucky in Vista (North County SD) does a good Pho, as well as an excellent Bun Thit Nuong!

Of all places, Lexington, KY has Pho BC. The small bowl is reasonably priced and a good size for lunch. The large bowl is a little pricey but you get a pretty substantial serving.

I stay near Little Saigon when I visit the LA area which is often. I've eaten at a few of the Vietnamese restaurants in the area and had good meals each time.

Is there Pho restaurants in that area that I should focus on? Usually I just drive down Bolsa and stop at one that looks good.
