The consolidated "Pho" thread

I have become quite partial to Pho, the Vietnamese beef broth-with-beef-and-noodles and the restaurants that serve it. I had some Asian coworkers who taught me how to order and pay for the stuff.

Pho Hints:

1) Pho is ordered by number, usually the numbers denote combinations of types of meat including flank, brisket, rare steak, tendon, and "bible tripe." I can do without the tendon and tripe, but that's just me.

2) Order "Coffee" and you will get the delicious and invigorating Cafe Sua Da, filtered hot French coffee served in a cup with condensed milk, you mix it up and then you pour it over ice.

3) You get a separate plate of bean sprouts, mint leaves, and jalapeno peppers, flavor to taste.

4) You can also squirt hoisin or pepper sauce (found on your table) and mix to taste.

5) You walk up to the cashier to pay, they don't bring you a check.

I have found Pho restaurants usually in or near Vietnamese-expat enclaves, including Westminster, CA; Arlington, VA; Ontario, CA; and Reseda, CA. One thing I have learned is that many Pho restaurants (is there a short title? phoeries?) cater to native Vietnamese and the quality of service, if any, offered to Westerners can vary greatly. However, some are quite clean and inviting and some offer other dishes and other Asian specialties such as Clay Pot and/or Boba Tea.

What are your favorite and non-favorite Pho parlors and why?

Would frequent Little Saigon in Orange County, but I've found better in Pomona, CA of all places. Growing Vietnamese community there, so of course, restaurants are popping up.

I avoid any place that looks too clean. A really clean place usually means the normally $4-5 pho goes for $8 and is not any better. You actually get less of it and usually less condiments! Go where you see lots of locals - that's the best clue.

In addition to pho, I also love banh mi but I will not reveal my secret location. So good, so cheap. Any com dish is excellent.

And of course they cater to their brethren, where else would they get a slice of home? They aren't required to learn "Western" customs to appease Westerners. Its sometimes easier for Vietnamese families to go out to a pho place instead of making it at home.

Vancouver, BC has many pho resturants. The resturant chain Pho Hoa has many outlets. My fav is Pho Hoa in East Vancouver, because it is open 24 hours, the beef broth is tastier than those that close for the night IMHO.

Living in South Taiwan now, I was expecting to find good pho. Haven't yet but the search is still on going.

Many, many pho places here in Houston. I usually don't get it during the summer b/c it's so friggin' hot here.

Now, how 'bout those vietnamese sandwiches????

I frequent Pho Bac when in Tacoma, WA. It is located in the "Hilltop" district, and the owner is quite friendly. Don't know if the staff really speak any English, but I think most people will be fine ordering.

richard?? what was the name of the place we went to in Falls Church? It was excellent pho. I think it was in the Eden Center which has several very good Vietnamese places. Pho 75 (at least that was the name) had several locations around DC that were great.

In NY try Cong Ly on Hester Street in Manhattan. I had the pho there once, this past spring, and it was very, very good.

My wife and I were in Hanoi last December and told our guide how much we liked pho. So he picked us up early on several of the days we were there so that we could join him for breakfast at his favorite pho place. It was a wonderful experience to smell the broth and get served a hot bowl of pho at 5:30 in the morning.

Pho-24 is the hot pho chain in Vietnam -- I'm not sure exactly how widespread it is across the country, but in Ho Chi Minh City you could throw a rock in any direction and hit one. Clearly they are popular with locals, but with pointing it was easy for an English-speaker to do fine, as they did have English on the menus. According to an article I read in the NYT last summer, apparently the founder of the chain modeled the idea on McDonalds -- that said, service and such is much better than one finds at McD's.

I was sipping a glass of Cafe Sua Da as I read this thread. Sigh. Life is good.

Try the one in the mall at the SE corner of Little River Tpke & Beauregard.(gone) They have deep-fried soft shell crabs and other interesting fare in addition to the pho. Also the granddaddy of DC pho is Pho 75 on Wilson Blvd in Arlington.

I used to frequent Saigon Express in Berkeley. Also had great pho in Calgary, AB, and Waikiki, HI, of all places. Can't find any decent stuff here in Christchurch, NZ, sadly.

There's good pho in Oakland (Pho 84). Also in Concord CA there's a pho place that's part of a chain -- really cheap, and really good.

There's a decent spot for Pho in Chicago...at Wabash and Washington (roughly). Can't recall the name at the moment, but they also deliver...
