Would frequent Little Saigon in Orange County, but I've found better in Pomona, CA of all places. Growing Vietnamese community there, so of course, restaurants are popping up.
I avoid any place that looks too clean. A really clean place usually means the normally $4-5 pho goes for $8 and is not any better. You actually get less of it and usually less condiments! Go where you see lots of locals - that's the best clue.
In addition to pho, I also love banh mi but I will not reveal my secret location. So good, so cheap. Any com dish is excellent.
And of course they cater to their brethren, where else would they get a slice of home? They aren't required to learn "Western" customs to appease Westerners. Its sometimes easier for Vietnamese families to go out to a pho place instead of making it at home.
