I've been upgraded on about 80% of my flights the last 18 months, even with being only Gold. Even got upgraded when I was 4th on a list with 2 seats left.
Flight today SLC-BOS I'm 18 of 39 for an upgrade with 0 seats open. In fact, the flight is likely oversold. Days of open middle seats and abundant upgrades are over it appears.

FO on award ticket (Class NX)

SEA-JFK (DL327)
Usually operated by a D1-equipped 757-200, but got swapped to a four-class 767-300ER the night before and the Premium Select cabin is the C+ seating on domestic routes. Ended up with a bulkhead window seat, making it the nicest upgrade I've gotten, besides a D1 seat on a LAS-SEA one-off repositioning flight (last flight I took before COVID).

JFK-KEF (DL246)
This flight appeared full, but seats opened up while on the way to JFK and I had my pick of open C+ seats. Got a window seat without a neighbor. No option to buy into D1, I think it went out with 3 people.

In order to be put in the queue for an upgrade, does one have to actively put oneself in or does Delta know if you want to be upgraded and your status?

Thanks in advance!

As a Medallion member, you need to ensure the “Request Upgrade” box is ticked in your reservation. Usually this happens automatically, but not always.

You can change/verify your preference on a specific reservation using the checkboxes tardyturtle mentioned, but there is also a section in your profile: https://www.delta.com/myprofile/preferences

which will apply generally to all reservations (unless you override for an individual ticket as described)

Sometimes when I pull up my reservation in the app it says "upgrade requested" but other times it says "Upgrade Status - " - for the same flight!! thoughts?

JFK to SFO today (October 2) - D1 upgrade notification came in T-7. S fare (C+).

Based on the upgraded list position of where I stood, I was expecting gate upgrade, but now I can go hang out at the SC for a few minutes.

DCA-JFK: Upgraded to F at the window
JFK-SDQ: Upgraded to F at the window
SDQ-JFK: Upgraded to F at the window
JFK-DCA: Upgraded to F at the window

All flights ended up with some people in the UG list. JFK-SDQ was a guarantee upgrade as a FO in the past, nowadays my GM spouse usually gets upgraded at the gate or only gets C+.

———————
SDQ-ATL -> Booked C+. Upgraded to F at the gate

ATL-DCA-> Booked C+. 3/14 for 0 seats.
DCA-MSP: Upgraded to C+ a few hours ahead of the window, 9/22 for 0 F seats.
MSP-SFO: Upgraded to C+ When first segment cleared, 13/27 for 0 F seats
SFO-JFK: Upgraded to C+ ahead of time but to a middle seat so downgraded to Y, 19/35 for 0 Delta One seats.
JFK-DCA: Upgraded to F at the window.

F: 6/10= 60%

One of these percentages is wrong and I'll let you figure out which one. Note: it's the first one :-D

You actually went down 5% in the time you lost two more upgrades.
