Mass tagging is a great feature of the photo organization tools that are part of the Adobe Photoshop Elements package I have on my computer. I can plug a memory card from the camera into the computer, everything automatically downloads, and then it just takes a few minutes to tag it all. And then when I upload it to my SmugMug account using the software's built-in uploader, the tags, and captions if I've created those, upload as well to the Web for sharing. Makes it so much faster and easier than tagging each photo by hand.

Picasa will allow for the same thing with mass tagging and then direct upload to SmugMug galleries. I love that feature. The only limitation I've found is that Picasa doesn't like multi-work tags. So tagging a photo "new york city" gets three tags, each of which is pretty useless.

Also, SmugMug allows for bulk editing of tags/captions within its interface, which is also useful.

Yeah I like the mass tagging/captioning features in SmugMug. It came in handy before I indexed the thousands of photos on my hard drive (that was a full weekend project about 18 months ago). But now I do the mass tagging/captioning before the upload to SmugMug, so that I have them tagged in both places, since I can use the tags on my computer to quickly find pictures in my Adobe organizer.

It is, but I don't like the Windows version I tried (may be better now).

There are some other uploading tools out there as well.

I may switch over to SmugMug but the speed of it just doesn't seem reliable... :(

I don't know that I've ever seen speed problems. Interestingly, they use Amazon's infrastructure for their service, so you'd think there would be plenty of capacity.

Huh. I find browsing photos on SmugMug faster than on Flickr, and I certainly like the layout of SmugMug's "galleries" better than Flickr's "sets."

Every time I view people's SmugMug galleries they seem to take forever to load. I think it has something to do with them using S3 as their storage method.

As an example, I view rkkwan's photos sometimes and when I click on some pictures they don't seem load. The more I think about it, it may have to do more with code than speed.

ssullivan Jun 19, 2008 4:30 pm

I believe rkkwan uses Zenfolio.

Well that would explain it. I have no idea why I thought he was using SmugMug.

Wow The Box is about to hit 300 pages (at least with the way I've got my FT options set).

I have it at 398 with the regular default settings.

Four Hundred coming up the way I'm set up.

By the way, I find it strange that there has not been any mention yet in the Box about the *A announcement that will put CO into bed with UA.
