We've all been too busy posting about it in the UA/CO Alliance thread. :p

I'll throw in a vote for .Mac's photo gallery. It has great integration with iPhoto (and the iPhone) and the web gallery is full of wonderful AJAX goodness. The upcoming changes related to the MobileMe re-branding sound like they will be nice as well.
More info here.

The price tag ($99/yr) might not be very appealing to non-Mac users as many of the features might not be of much use to you.

Huh. I find browsing photos on SmugMug faster than on Flickr, and I certainly like the layout of SmugMug's "galleries" better than Flickr's "sets."

From what I've seen, I prefer Smugmug to Flickr. I know one solution isn't for everyone, but one feature I like about Smugmug is that the user can browse photos in any size they want. In Flickr, this is restricted to one size.

Being the ubergeek I am, i actually just run my own instance of Gallery on one of my servers. Though, i don't think Gallery has kept up with flickr as far as level of features, though I should check out the new modules.

Yes, I need help, hence why I hang out in the box. :D

Don't worry, you're not alone here (as I am sure you've discovered!). The Box has computer geeks, airline geeks, photography geeks and some that a mixture of the above. :D

I used to run Gallery on one of my own servers until I purchased .Mac about a year ago (I originally wanted it for other features). Gallery was nice, but the interface of the .Mac gallery is a bit nicer so I switched over to that. I also used to run Plogger which had a nice lightweight feel to it.

I found a guard to make the TSA look like actual professionals. City of PHL security guard. The movie industry has taken over city hall - literally. They are filming part of Transformers 2 in the courtyard in city hall. They are trying to re-create somewhere in Paris. Of course, my job entails getting video. Well, I am in an area where the public is and I can see through their fencing. There is no cordoning off of the area. I saw a couple of people snap pictures with their cell phone cameras (though, unless their zoom was real good, they didn't get much). So, I started with my professional video camera (20+ pounds, broadcast quality). About 1:40 into getting the video, I was essentially assaulted by a rent-a-cop working for the city. Needless to say, it wasn't pretty. I could have, and may still file assault charges. Not sure yet. Of course, I capture it all on video. But, for the story I am working on, I have 1:40 of video which is enough to work with. These rent-a-cops think they own the place... especially on city property - aka public property. Though, I'll calm down for now. Need to get my arse ready for my trip to IAH tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Rent-a-cops on power trips are never good.

Be sure to let us know when the footage is available on YouTube! :D

I once was an ubergeek, and maintained my own web site and server, etc, etc. But nowadays I am a uber-lazy geek, and just go for the canned stuff. :D

Haha, me too.

Well I guess I still maintain some level of geekness when it comes to writing queries for reports for clients. But I get paid to do that.

MilesDavis Jun 19, 2008 6:46 pm

Oh, well, I'd do it for money! :D

I'm a Flickr loyalist because I've been with them since they started.

I use Lightroom for my processing as iPhoto can't really handle my library. Actually, I need to get a eSATA harddrive just for the photos so I can edit them directly on the drive and not store anything on my machine's drive.

Multiple websites, about 3 TB of data that I've collected and done nothing with, and used to run a whole slew of Linux home servers.

How big is your library? I have a reasonably sized library and iPhoto '08 doesn't seem to have any problem handling it. Previous versions of iPhoto used to choke pretty easily.

I am becoming a fan of the Lightroom/Apeature type products but I am still deciding which one I want to move to.

I actually wrote my own code to handle my photo galleries, including web-based uploads and multi-domain support so I could host sites for my friends on my home server as well (http://www.millerworks.net/PicDB/ if you're interested). All ASP + MySQL and not particularly good, but it did what I needed it to do really well. I've migrated my mail services over to Gmail Apps using my custom domains, and I've started moving my photos to SmugMug, my stories to Blogger and my random thoughts to the Box. Overall I think life is much easier now and I have one less thing to worry about any time I want to reboot my server.

My main reasons for choosing SmugMug over flickr were custom domain names (I get gallery.millerworks.net instead of flickr.com/something/something/millerworks or however they handle that), ability to auto water-mark the images and ability to set prices. I've sold a few prints and I'm much happier actually making the few cents on the transactions than giving all that money to someone else.

Oh, and if you're running FlyerTalk the right way then the Box just hit 150 pages. ^^

Interesting reading over in the NW and DL forums regarding CO announcing their planned alliance switch. A lot of the NW flyers are dismayed at the eventual loss of upgrades on CO, and both seem to be pretty down about the loss of CO's lounges and access to reward tickets on CO.

Of course over at UA not everyone is throwing out the welcome mat.
