CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Fwiw, the mileage ticket taxes charged (~$85/2tiks)t to my PRG last month got reimbursed, even though I wasn't expecting to see the airline credit.

Did the mileage ticket charge look like a ticket with an itinerary (AAA-BBB) on it? If not, I'm guessing that Amex might simply consider anything that doesn't have ticket-type AAA-BBB information on it as an "incidental" charge perhaps?

However, whether it appears that way or not may depend on how it's charged. Ie, it might appear one way when you're booking an award online, a different way when you're booking an award over the phone, a different way when you're modifying an award (to one which has higher taxes/fees), etc. So just because it worked in one case does not necessarily prove that it works in all cases.

Is there any way to know if you have already used your Amex $200 credit?

You can look in the Benefits section of your online account or you can call the number on the back of the card and ask.

Log in online and under benefits the Airline Credit will be listed. Your amount used will be there in that box.

I got a new Aspire, and I saw a few folks who had luck with >$100 GC reimbursements, and since I have min spend to meet anyway, figured I'd give it a try. Selected AA on the website, waited a few minutes to get the confirmation email, then bought two GC's in different transactions, one for $100 and one for $150, both reimbursed! So it definitely seems to be working. Wish it would on Delta too for my Platinum card! I have so many $50 GC's...

If it wasn't refunded there's no reason it wouldn't. But since it was refunded I doubt it.

So are people getting reimbursed for single gift cards of >$100? Has anyone tried buying a single $250 gift card to get the credit on Aspire? Or is $200 the limit?

update: 2 of the 3 were reimbursed.

I've got 3 posted charged on Nov 9.
81.10 - award travel fees/taxes - not reimbursed
87.59 - seat choice Main cabin extra fees - reimbursed on 11/13
92.57 - seat choice Main cabin extra fees - reimbursed on 11/13

I'll finish out the rest on bag fees coming up.
