CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.
Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."
Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:
Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.
* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

I just got the reimbursement. Guess I just had to ask here.
Personal Amex Platinum
5/21: Purchased 2x100$ gift cards
5/26: Reimbursed
I bought the gift cards immediately after selecting AA as the airline for the reimbursement benefit, so apparently it’s not necessary to wait.

Anyone know what would happen to the 200 airline credits if you downgrade back to premier gold within 45 days off upgrade period. They said I can go back to gold in 45 days.

You can use the airline reimbursement and cancel the card within 30 days of the annual fee hitting (the most recent statement closing date).

I downgraded my Personal Platinum days after the $550 AF hit to the green card as I have the Business Open Platinum and most of the benes are duplicate. I received a credit on the last day of the following statement for $504.16 (11 month credit).

Not sure you will receive 100% of AF back.

My billing cycle ended on Jun 8 and I was charged the AF in that bill. I have not used 2018 airline credit yet. Can I purchase the GC now and cancel the card to get the AF back and also keep the airline credit?

Yes. (Obviously, you will want to wait until the credit actually posts to the account prior to cancelling the card.)
