FHR properties in Las Vegas are discussed HERE.

FHR is the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts benefit program available with Centurion and Platinum charge cards.

Receive these complimentary benefits with each FINE HOTELS & RESORTS booking:
  • Noon check-In, when available
  • Room Upgrade upon arrival, when available*
  • Daily breakfast for two people
  • Guaranteed 4pm late checkout. Additional special benefit unique to each property, such as a $100 food and beverage credit or a massage for two people**

USA cardholder may book online at: americanexpress.com/fhr or call Platinum Travel Service at 1-800-525-3355. Cardholders from other countries can use the same website to see participating properties, but cannot view prices or book. In some countries FHR properties can be booked through the general American Express Travel site.

Per the T's and C's of FHR, you must pay with an American Express card when checking out of the hotel. However many front desk agents don't notice or care so it is possible, but not a guarantee, that you can pay with a non-Amex card.

Good point. I will report that there. Yes, I was a bit disappointed about that... I don't know what their (The London West Hollywood's) policy is (certain room types/categories?), but there didn't seem to be any leeway in the matter after asking a few times.

We actually checked in quite late in the evening and checked out the next day and if the upgraded room was just going to be sitting there empty... well, I was a little surprised they couldn't do it.

Does any action taken by Amex further to the survey or is just to indicate on their web site the % of the happy people per property ?

I'm looking at FHR properties in Montreal - does anyone have recent experience or opinions of the Loews there? That's currently the best rate and seems close to everything.

Did not automatically give a room upgrade and after I inquired about it, they mentioned they don't upgrade my room. They (rep and front desk manager) did however offer the available upgraded room to me for a couple hundred dollars. I declined. Seems a little against the FHR policy of "upgrade if available."? (This was an off-night, evening check-in). So, no FHR benefit here either. Wish I would have known before booking this stay. That being said, rooms feature nice decor and are generally good.
.
One important thing is what category room did you book and what was the upgraded room offered? Often, there is a policy limiting the extent of the upgrade available.

It is a above average mtl property.... but across the street from a new giant construction site that might break ground soon (just all fenced in now) and another one is directly behind the hotel that i know is a work in progress. You may want to call them to discuss

Unfortunately no upgrade, was told hotel at capacity, although am always suspicious ^
Amazing hotel by the way
We also stayed here recently. Used a suite upgrade certificate to a Park Suite and enquired whether a further AMEX FHR upgrade would be granted, as rate through FHR was higher and wanted to assess whether worth it. We were advised that it would be given if available, although the hotel didn't have many suites so it could not be guaranteed.

Arrived at the hotel and escorted to our suite. No upgrade given despite better suites being available. Having said that, we were happy with the room we received, so didn't bother quibbling.

A great hotel with good service. However, I was a little underwhelmed by the lack of warmth in the service (compared to Kyoto Hyatt for example). New York Bar was great. Husband enjoyed the Grill, I found it less to my liking, but $100 a nice benefit from AMEX FHR.

Having heard so much praise of the FHR program, I have just tried to make my first reservation for one night at Fairmont Whistler for Canada Day and here's what I learned after speaking to Amex platinum travel:

Lowest FHR rate is $409
Lowest non-FHR rate is $349
Lowest expedia rate is $229

So Amex platinum is completely useless in this particular case.

Not sure whether your non-FHR rate is from Amex or Fairmont, but the FHR is usually competitive with the BAR available directly from the hotel. It does not, and IMO is not designed to, compete with prepaid rates or those offered by third-parties.

Keep in mind that Fairmont does award stay credit for Expedia bookings, so don't let that hold you back from booking that rate.

I am disappointed with Amex not being able to book the $229 expedia rate at all, so I can't use my $200 travel credit. Booking.com has $184 rate! Amex $349 lowest rate (non-FHR) is the same as on Fairmont website. FHR rate at $409 is useless, too. Sure, I'll book $184 booking.com rate.

It would seem that the Amex rates are the same as those offered by Fairmont, in which case your disappointment should lie not with Amex but with Fairmont, who allows third parties to undercut their own rates.

Yes. But good on him for checking. Sometimes the FHR rates are worse than others, sometimes better and sometimes equal. It is wise to check around and of course take into consideration the benefits you get with FHR, which at some hotels are substantial.

W New York Time Square

I booked the W NY Time Square using FHR for a last minute trip as it offered a very good rate and a $100 food and beverage credit. You get what you pay for - the room was really junky - scratched up furniture, stained carpet, and lousy bathroom. Breakfast was a joke as you could only order room service from a door hanging with very limited selection that they gave you at checkin. Frankly, I do not want to eat breakfast in a small hotel room so did not like the fact that I could not go to the restaurant in order to utilize the breakfast amenity. The upgrade was to a room on a higher floor. The restaurant Blue Fin was the only good thing about the hotel and the FHR package.

- Upgraded one category as a SPG Gold on a FHR from deluxe to grand deluxe (higher floor perhaps?)
- $80 credit for breakfast - room service or in restaurant. two people came out to about ~$100 AI
- $100 Spa credit at Remede - covers a 30 minute massage or facial pre gratuity
- Checked in early and check out later as well

I booked a room there last summer through FHR. Got the usual amenities: an upgrade, late checkout and breakfast for two. The extra amenity was a $100 food & beverage credit, which was easily applied at check-out.

Hotel d'Angleterre in Geneva
-received an upgraded room category
-$100USD food & beverage credit which turned out to be 90CHF
-received a complimentary welcome drink; not sure if this was as a result of FHR or not, but considering the extreme prices at the bar, it was much appreciated
-no problem with free breakfast for one
-didn't use the late check-out, but it was offered
