So Amex platinum is completely useless in this particular case.
Not sure whether your non-FHR rate is from Amex or Fairmont, but the FHR is usually competitive with the BAR available directly from the hotel. It does not, and IMO is not designed to, compete with prepaid rates or those offered by third-parties.

Keep in mind that Fairmont does award stay credit for Expedia bookings, so don't let that hold you back from booking that rate.
