Having heard so much praise of the FHR program, I have just tried to make my first reservation for one night at Fairmont Whistler for Canada Day and here's what I learned after speaking to Amex platinum travel:

Lowest FHR rate is $409
Lowest non-FHR rate is $349
Lowest expedia rate is $229

So Amex platinum is completely useless in this particular case.
