I don't want to put in until I see R availability open, but this is how it stands currently:

F9 FN9 A9 ON3 O0 J9 JN9 C9 D9 Z9 ZN9 P9 PN9 R0 RN0 IN0 I0 Y9 YN9 B9 M9 E9 U9 H9 HN9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L9 K9 G9 N9 XN9 X9

Seat map shows only 1 GF seat and 3 BF booked (none on UD). Do folks think there's a good chance R comes open at this rate?
An update on this: I ended up putting it in because their domestic leg (ORD-PHL) had R availability, and I know I will get that as a freebie for them even if the longer leg doesn't clear. J has filled up a little bit more but still lots of seats available. Fingers crossed!

Separately: my wife and I are flying back NRT-EWR on 3/27 on UA78. R availability just opened up for the first time (R=2), but as my wife is on an award ticket (I am on a revenue booking), I don't want to leave her behind. What do people think the possibility of any I inventory opening up prior to departure is like?

But yet when i asked my travel agent she said that C was full - couldn't even buy a seat

Could this be due to the new flight (only 2nd time it will fly)
The seat map is in this, and most instances, an accurate indicator of loads in BF.

That flight is booked only 7/48 in BF.

The J3 C2 D2 is likely an error and will be corrected within the next few days.

Thanks Kacee

What tool are you using to see the load? Also, at 7/48, why not clear some of the GPUs now instead of later

UA840 Sydney to LAX - chance of Star Alliance upgrade

Hi all

Looking to travel from Sydney to LAX on UA840 soon which I see is on the new 777-200 four class planes. Hoping to burn some points to get a Star Alliance upgrade from Y to J.

Anyone got any intell on the odds of that? if it is going to be impossible I will take a different airline/route.

If I read your post correctly, based on your profile:
You're a member of Air NZ's FF program, and want to use miles to upgrade on a UA flight.

Firstly, UA doesn't have 4 classes, just 3. The Economy+ section is effectively, "Economy with more legroom" and is not Premium Economy.

Secondly, my recollection is that upgrading Y->J using another Star Alliance airline's miles requires that you purchase a full fare ticket (Y or B class). I suspect it would be cheaper to just by the cheapest business fare.

The only time I took this route I was successful in upgrading. Day of the week matters a lot for getting one, I flew on a Monday and came home on a Wednesday. I've heard that Friday / Saturday is usually sold out in J.

Neither "new" nor four class. If you're expecting a true premium experience in business class on that aircraft, you will be sorely disappointed.

Star Alliance upgrade is only possible if you have a Y or B fare and then only if saver business award space is available. This is not a particularly high odds proposition.

That's just not how UA does it. Their program, they do it how they wish.

The one caveat I will add here is that since that's one of the first days of a brand new route, there could be something funky going on (e.g., VIP giveaways or perhaps a delayed start to the service) and those BF seats might never be opened for sale (or upgrade).

Which I would consider an upgrade in BF. 2-4-2 to 2-2-2.

Unclear if the right thread, but a data point: UA 5315 SFO-MSP (E75) last Friday went out with 2 paid, 8 cleared, and 2 empty in F. Looks like the higher fare differential is taking its toll - other flights seem similar. That and the E75 has such a nice F/Y ratio ^

Hello All,

I am waitlisted for an upgrade (miles + co-pay) on UA 5961 (SFO-AUS) - 03/25.

What are my chances it clears - currently i see R=0?

Available fare classes: F3-A3-JN3-C3-D3-Z0-ZN0-P0-PN0-R0-RN0-IN0-I0-Y9-YN9-B9-M9-E9-U7-H6-HN0-Q1-V1-W1-S0-T0-L0-K0-G0-N0-XN0-X0 (using UA search, i am not sure how accurate it is).

thanks in advance.

Would help to know what status you are But what I (and most other FT'ers) would like to know is how you can see the fare buckets right now

I would normally rate these both as good chances, but with UA these days, who knows?

4/27 (Wed) IAD-SFO 11am on a 738, booked Q, waitlisted with GPU.

8/30 (Tues) IAD-LHR 6pm on a 772, booked Q, waitlisted with GPU. (Also trying to score an I/IN or O seat for my wife, but those are no dice, either.)

On the latter, the GPU has never been deducted from my account (blame a UA ticketing bug), but the C segment shows on the itin as waitlisted. I've called twice to try to get them to at least take my GPU with no luck yet.
